AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic filed an appeal on Monday against the start of his war crimes trial, arguing that he has not been given enough time to prepare for the proposed October 19 date.
In the 21-page appeal, Karadzic -- who has been charged on 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity -- says the court has failed to take into account the volume of material at issue and the resources available to him to prepare his defence.
"He has been working day and night to prepare for his trial and to bring out the truth of what happened in Bosnia. But he cannot agree to participate in proceedings which will be fundamentally unfair from the beginning," Karadzic said in the appeal, referring to himself in the third person.
Karadzic, who was captured in 2008 after 11 years on the run, is the most prominent figure being prosecuted for crimes during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war.
Judge O-Gon Kwon of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia set the trial date on September 8, a few days after Karadzic had asked for another 10 months of preparation time.
