Sports news that will stump any US readers?. The English game of Cricket, much favoured by 'Darkies from the former colonies has lost its most famous tree.
The 90 ft Lime tree at Kent County Cricket Club's Canterbury ground has been stumped after more than 150 years of being battered by balls (ouch). The Tree which had stood at deep midwicket (or wide third man) since the days of Admiral Nelson, has been snapped off 7ft above the ground, with its trunk lying shattered on the green.
Its presence pre-dated the St Lawrence Cricket ground, the scene of batting exploits by the likes of W.G.Grace, Woolley, and Colin Cowdrey at some of the most famous Cricket events since 1847, by at least 40 years.
As it was the only tree within the boundary ropes at a first-class ground, Kent had to adapt the rules of Cricket: Any ball hitting any part of the tree was signalled as a four, even if it would otherwise have gone over the ropes for six, and no batsman could be caught off the rebound.
