Just wondering about what folk thought about the AK-101? Last time I checked it seemed to be rather hard to get in the USA. However they fire the .223 round and would seem (When you can find them) to be an inexpensive option to the AR-15. If things went tits up in this country, I would imagine it would be wise to have a weapon that chambers the same round as the military uses.

Might be a good idea. Heck you could go for a 5.56 and a 7.62 at the same time hehe.

no answers just questions: are they available? do they take ak-47 type 223 mags? parts resupply? cost vs other substitutes?

I'd just get an ar-15. rock island, bushmaster, dpms all ok. get some used 20 rd mags and some new 30 GI mags. then a couple cases of ammo and zero it for yourself and practice regularly. you ought to be able to do that for 1000 and change.

then if you want an ak, just get one in 762x39. there are some nice ones build on bulgarian receivers which are excellent quality compared to other nations of origin.

gun collecting is a waste of time and money for WNs. we ought to be collecting the hearts and minds of our people. Dont waste on more than a few guns. A few rifles-- I know, it's hard to resist-- a good all purpose shotgun, maybe 2 max, one for animals, one for "peeps"- and maybe three or four handguns. your 45, your 9mm, your wheelgun for your wife, and your backup. when the SHF it's ideas and alliances that will count, and the standing army has plenty of arms to go around. if anything, when the SHF, ammo comes up in short supply. or so says Col Cooper.

Parts do not seem to be a problem, Just finding the AK-101 itself is. If you do find one the cost is around $400. They take AK-74 retrofit mags. I am partial to the East German Mags myself. I am a fan of the AK line and it fits my pocketbook. The 7.62 x 39 is my fave round. Mostly because it's inexpensive and plentiful. One thing that I don't like about the .223 is it's lack of power vs. say 7.62. I like what you say about getting weapons from the standing army, that's how I see it possibly playing out.

That would be the ultimate for this poor boy!

Spandau,

See the ".45 vs. 9mm" thread's last couple of pages for why I like the 7.62x39 over the 5.56 NATO.

Of course, there's always the advantage of the 5.56mm being the military's round, but I suppose you could use the 7.63x39 to "acquire" a weapon that shoots the 5.56mm. I just like the cost factor of the 7.62x39 and the fact that it penetrates light cover much better than the 5.56mm. Plus, as AE pointed out, you can get an excellent Bulgarian AK in 7.62x39 for pretty cheap. It won't let you down.

MST, Fascinating thread there. I hadn't seen it. I totally agree about the 7.62 x 39 vs. the 5.56. I like the idea about acquiring a 5.56 weapon. I think that I will go the 7.62 route. I have a Chinese AK-47 and just really want a AK-74 or above. I am a big fan of the AK line! My AK-47 kicks tight ass. Arrrgh!

Another choice is Romanian. Romanian AKs (SAR-1s) aren't too bad, but they're very rough around the edges. I've never had a Chinese one, but hey, an AK is an AK. The only disadvantage I've heard to the Chinese is that they take their own specific parts and won't interchange with the old Com-Bloc ones. That alone might be reason enough to find a Com-Bloc manufactured one.

I like the AK-74 also and the ballistics of the 5.45x39 round are pretty impressive, but I think the ammo would be very hard to come by in a SHTF situation.

I've seen several Romanian AK's and they are indeed rough around the edges. But they seem to fire straight so alright there. I didn't know that Chi-com AK parts don't mix with Com-Bloc, but I've never had the need to change out anything on my Chi-Com. 5.45x39 is a harder round to come by. That's why I wouldn't mind an AK chambered to the 5.56 like the AK-101. I think an AK-47 and a AK-101 would do well if the SHTF.

Century arms had them for about 350$ 40$ more and you could get a g3. :p

*update*
I just saw a Hess us ak in 223 with an adaptor that allows use of m-16 mags, now I know Hess has a spotty reputation but how the hell do you fuck up an ak?especially using 80%Euro parts? :p
