Study: Coffee Top Source of Antioxidants

WASHINGTON — When the Ink Spots (search) sang "I love the java jive and it loves me" in 1940, they could not have known how right they were.

Coffee not only helps clear the mind and perk up the energy, it also provides more healthful antioxidants than any other food or beverage in the American diet, according to a study released Sunday.

Of course, too much coffee can make people jittery and even raise cholesterol levels, so food experts stress moderation.

The findings by Joe A. Vinson (search), a chemistry professor at the University of Scranton, in Pennsylvania, give a healthy boost to the warming beverage.

"The point is, people are getting the most antioxidants from beverages, as opposed to what you might think," Vinson said in a telephone interview.

Antioxidants, which are thought to help battle cancer and provide other health benefits, are abundant in grains, tomatoes and many other fruits and vegetables.

These researchers need to make up their minds ..... First coffee is good for you and then bad and then good again ..... It is neverending ..... The only ongoing positive remarks I've heard about coffee is with an ole' enema. Nasty but true.

The story is from Fox News. They forgot to throw something in about Iran and Syria attempting to corner the world's coffee supply. :)

I have never drunk a cup of coffee in my entire life. However those I know that do cannot do without it. I don't really want that type of addiction in my life. With the exception of hatred for the Jews, that is what gets me going in the morning.

Tea is claimed as an anti-oxidant also. It has a chemical (escapes me now) that is claimed beneficial. What is the beneficial chemical in coffee?

I dose up on coffee quite a bit, but I am not addicted. I get moving fine without it, and don't suffer from any withdrawal symptoms if I miss it in a day. I have to limit myself to about 8 cups, taken gradually, or it makes me too jumpy.

Coffee is a big factor in my prodigious post count. :D

I do believe that Green Tea is one THE BEST & most potent natural and healthy anti-oxidants. You are probably thinking of epigallocatechin gallate also known as EGCG which is found in some teas. :D Drink up :D

Personally, I wouldn't know . . . . I would guess steaming hot if you are into self torture . . . . You will have to ask R. Macdonald  about that, or visit this site http://www.ineedcoffee.com/01/01/enema/ (http://)
