May 7/2006: I just heard this on the news. Angela Portnoy, Russian emigrant to Israel, is about to birth her 4th child in a church basement in a small town in Newfoundland.
Why doesn't she go to a hospital? She doesn't go to a hospital because if she does, Immigration Dept. of Canada ("Citizenship and Immigration Canada" is the proper name) will deport her. Her husband was deported back to Israel some time ago. Now, why would the Canadian Govt. want to kick these fine people out of Newfoundland? They entered Canada seeking refuge because they felt that in Israel, they were "discriminated against" for being Russian, but the Canadi - oops, Absurdistanian - government does not consider them legitimate refugees (I guess).
Now, it seems that at least some of the good folk in that Newfoundland town (St. Mary's? Can't remember the name) really want the Portnoys to stay. They want them to stay in Newfoundland because there is a shortage of people in that part of Canada and they need all the help they can get building up the population. So said a Newfie lady with a strong Newfie accent. Now I just KNOW that the Portnoys would fit right in and be good citizens, etc.
