A wise man once said: "A pistol for the bedroom, a shotgun over the door, a rifle for reaching out, you need nothing more." I've often heard the question: What's the best weapon for defense? Stay away from expensive semi auto rifles. They are a waste of ammunition and money. The important thing in using firearms is not concentrating on which weapon looks the most evil or fires the most rounds. The important thing is methods of shooting. Semi auto or fully automatic weapons are not conducive to aimed fire. When someone fires a rifle rapidly there is no time for target picture recovery. The rounds will hit down range several inches apart. This is known as sweepnig. Those who aim will hit targets much more frequently. Kevin Harris, a victim of the federal siege on Ruby Ridge, dropped a heavily armed federal marshal with a hunting rifle. I recommend bolt action rifles in .308 to .30/06 caliber. As for the shotgun, what can I say? It is the most devastating hand held weapon there is. During WWI when armies were using poison gas, there were wide protests over the use of the shotgun for the horrible wounds it inflicted. Any 12 gauge with 00 buckshot will do for home defense. As for a handgun I recommend a common .38 caliber revolver. The .38 has many self defense loads available for it. Being a revolver, there are less parts to break or repair.
Now here's the only home defense scenario that matters: If an assailant is shooting at you from across the steet, take aim with the scoped rifle and shoot him in the face. If he is breaking down the door, use the shotgun and shoot him in the face. If he is in the bedroom use the pistol and shoot him in the face! Remember practice makes perfect.

More to follow.

true itz.

semiauto rifles are ok, but it will help in a court trial of a self defense shooting if an innocuous firearm is used without scary "assault weapon" accoutrements.

one way or another, bolt or other action, the rifle is an offensive weapon. everybody should learn to use a rifle. if you didnt learn in boy scouts or the service, a good place to learn is a DCM clinic. check with local gun clubs about this. oh yeah and dont wear your stormtrooper outfit that would be "bad form" indeed.
