Man battered beyond recognition by gang of four

A HOLTS man was beaten beyond recognition as he walked home through Glodwick after a night out with friends.

The 21-year-old now faces hours of surgery to reconstruct his face after being battered by a gang of four in an unprovoked attack in Waterloo Street.

The thugs pummelled the young man’s face so badly that he sustained a broken jaw, a broken cheekbone and other facial fractures. But the most serious injuries were severe cuts to his face that caused his skin to tear off the side of his face.

Now detectives are eager to catch the gang responsible for the horrific attack at 2.05am yesterday.

Det Cons Dave Wharmby, of Oldham CID said: “This was a callous and unprovoked attack.

“The victim is still unable to speak because of his injuries but we know that there was a man nearby eating chips at the time of the attack and I would urge him to contact Oldham CID on 0161-856 8965.”

The victim, who was meant to be going on his first holiday abroad in two weeks, had been out with friends in Liquid nightclub but left them in the town centre when they decided to go and get some food.

The four offenders, who are Asian men, stole the victim’s wallet and mobile phone.

Mother demands justice over son’s brutal beating - Oldham Chronicle



THE stunned parents of a 21-year-old man disfigured in a brutal attack said they could not recognise him in his hospital bed.



Anthony Gilday, of Curlew Road, Holts, was left with a broken jaw, broken cheekbone and cuts causing the skin to tear off his face after thugs battered him on Waterloo Street, at 2.05am on Saturday.

The water company worker was walking home alone after a night out in Oldham. He was this morning undergoing surgery, but was expected to return home later today.

His parents, Michael and Elaine Gilday, have today spoken of their anger at his ordeal.

Mrs Gilday said: “I knew as soon as I opened the door to the police that it was Anthony. He is my only son, and I knew where his three sisters were.

“As soon as I found out what had happened, I felt sick to my stomach. When we saw him we could not recognise him, he was so badly beaten.

“We are told he won’t need any more operations. He is a good-spirited person, and he has not been down.

“He appreciates the full impact of what has happened to him, but I think he could still be in delayed shock.

“We are all extremely angry about this. People around the Holts estate were in tears when they heard, because they know what a nice lad he is.

“He usually goes out with friends at the weekend, but hadn’t lately, because he was saving up for the holiday he was due to go on in two weeks time — his first time abroad. He said it was killing him staying in.

“We know the police have made progress, and we want to see the people responsible brought to justice as soon as possible.”

The gang of four thugs, believed to be Asian men, also stole Anthony’s wallet and mobile phone. Police investigations are ongoing.

Det Con Dave Wharmby, of Oldham CID, said: “This would have been a busy time of night with a number of people heading home after an evening out in Oldham.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the Glodwick Road area at that time to think back and try to remember whether they witnessed the attack and to anyone who may have any information about the offenders to contact CID at Oldham on 0161-856 8965 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800-555 111.”




Appeal as youths threaten revenge



An angry mob of young people gathered in Holts last night, threatening revenge for the vicious attack on Anthony Gilday.



Feelings were running high among about 120 youngsters who gathered outside Holts Village Estate Management Board hall after hearing of Sunday’s unprovoked attack on the 21-year-old.

Management board chairman Chris Wright confronted the gathering of people, aged from about 12 to 25, and appealed for calm. He said this morning: “They were fuming, and they were talking about going into Glodwick on Friday night to ‘get their own back’.

He added: “The situation is very volatile — like a tinder box smouldering — and I’m afraid it might spark off another riot.

“I have never seen so many youngsters gathered together. They were both male and female, from Holts and Alt, and were very angry.”

Mr Wright urged the youngsters to leave the matter to the police and not to take the law into their own hands. He said: “I and the other officers on the management board are appealing to parents to please make sure they know where their children are, who they are with, where they are going and what they are doing.”

He was also trying to contact Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Phil Woolas this morning to ask for his help in calming the situation.

Five arrests after brutal attack

POLICE are urging people not to take the law into their own hands following the brutal attack of a 21-year-old man.

The appeal came after five people were arrested for the attack on Anthony Gilday which left him unrecognisable to his own parents.

Anthony, of Curlew Road, Holts, was beaten up by thugs as he made his way home from a night out with friends in Oldham town centre, at 2.05am on Saturday.

He suffered a broken jaw and cheekbone and lacerations so severe that his skin was torn away from his face during the attack in Waterloo Street, Glodwick.

Detectives have so far arrested five men, three of whom have been released on police bail. Another two men remain in custody for questioning concerning their suspected involvement in the attack.

Last night, officers were called to Holts estate after reports that a group of people racially abused an Asian taxi driver and damaged his car in a revenge attack.

Today, the head of Oldham CID Det Chief Insp John Piekos called for calm and for the police to be allowed to do their job.

He said: “We are aware that local residents become both frightened and concerned when members of their local community are victims of crime but they can rest assured this incident is being fully investigated to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“We need the support of the local community to catch the individuals responsible.”

However, he pointed out that while police were attending incidents such as revenge attacks or gangs of youths gathering, resources are being taken away from the main investigation.

He added: “There is no place in our communities for those individuals who are tempted to take the law into their own hands. People who do act in such a way will be arrested.

“A team of detectives have been working hard to identify and build the case against those people responsible for the attack on Mr Gilday and I would like to reassure the residents of Oldham that the incident is being treated extremely seriously.”

Former Oldham councillor Jawaid Iqbal, a Glodwick resident, reiterated Mr Piekos’s call for calm.

He said: “Most people are sickened by this horrendous and unprovoked attack on an individual going about his own business.

“I urge anyone who saw the attack to contact police . This wall of silence must be broken.

“Oldham once again has been let down by a small criminal element in our society and its doesn't help our image.

“Chris Wright should be praised for his efforts urging youngsters to stay calm.”

Asian Gang sex attack terrorises girl - ROCHDALE OBSERVER


POLICE are hunting a teenage gang which carried out a horrifying sex
attack on a 16-year-old girl.

The victim was chased by five youths across Cronkeyshaw Common before
being grabbed near Fieldhouse Road. She was then indecently assaulted
by two of them, while the others looked on laughing.

The gang ran away after the girl started screaming for help.

Police, who said the attackers were all Asian and aged between 14 and
17, are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Inspector Martin Jeffs of Rochdale CID said Saturday
night's assault was unrelated to those carried out by the serial sex
attacker, who is still at large after targeting 11 women and girls
since February.

But he added: "It is just as serious an assault and was obviously
very traumatic for the young girl.

"She has been examined in hospital and was questioned by officers on
Monday.

"I would like to warn the public to remain on their guard as there
are obviously several individuals out there who are prepared to
attack lone women."

The council's community safety team has already taken steps to secure
the Common, cutting back high hedges around the Whitworth Road bus
stop, about half-a-mile from where a 13-year-old girl was attacked in
June.

Community safety manager Lee Durrant is warning families to be extra
vigilant following this latest attack. "The Common is overlooked by
houses on both sides so it should be quite a safe area, but there are
parts which are very dark at night," he said.

Danger

"It would be difficult to spot anyone in danger if they were wearing
dark clothes.

"I would urge parents to make sure they know where children and young
people are going - do not let them wander around aimlessly at night.

"If they have to go out at night make sure they do not go out alone
or take short cuts. Escort them to where they want to go if possible
or insist they walk on the main road.

"The community safety team has plenty of personal safety alarms. All
they have to do is ring us through the council switchboard on 647474.

"And we are also available to do safety talks if any organisations
need them."

Cabbie hunted after sex attack on woman - Sheffield Star 25/8/04


A CABBIE launched a sex attack on a woman customer then drove across Sheffield and assaulted her at a second location before finally taking her home.


Police were hunting the offender, who they believe to be a legitimate private hire driver.
Staff at the Ice Bar in Carver Street summoned him to take home a 29 year old female reveller at around 2 am on Saturday August 14,
She needed to get home to Woodhouse but during the journey the driver pulled up and sexually assaulted her in the rear of the vehicle.
He then drove across the city before stopping for a second time in the Lodge Moor area to assault her a second time.
After that he took her home, but she is understood to have been sick in the rear of the car and police believe the driver may have finished his shift early as a result.
The cabbie is believed to have been a private hire driver who should only have picked up pre-booked customers.
However, it is understood he was flagged down in the street by bar staff who wanted to get the customer home safely.
The woman contacted police following the incident, though she is unclear where the first assault took place.
She recognised the second location as Lodge Moor and police are now appealing for information anyone who recognises the suspect's description.
He was aged 30s and of Asian appearance, with short hair and a goatee beard.

Sex assault by bogus taxi driver - yes he's asian/paki again


A teenager was the victim of a serious sexual attack by a man claiming to be a taxi driver.
The 18-year-old stepped into the man's car in the early hours while walking home, barefoot and carrying her boots, in the Riverside area of Cardiff.

He took her towards the Fairwater area then stopped the car and assaulted her.

Detectives said it was "a very serious sexual assault and a frightening incident".

The young woman was walking home, barefoot and carrying her boots, along Ninian Park Road after leaving Cardiff city centre at 0010 BST on Monday.

She was aware of a car passing her a few times and then, near a school on Kitchener Road, the vehicle stopped.

The car is described as a blue or black, four-door, possibly a new Escort. The driver told her he was in a taxi.

The man drove her towards Ely bridge and then turned right towards Fairwater, before the driver stopped at Gorse Place and subjected her to a serious sexual assault, said police.

The woman eventually broke free and ran through some fields to a telephone box, where she contacted police.

Her attacker was described as Asian, aged about 25, with short, dark hair, very short on the side and spiky on top.
He had chubby cheeks, a big nose, dark eyes and chunky build, spoke in broken English, was wearing a black woollen jacket, and a black shirt believed to have an "Olympus security" logo on the left.

Police are asking anybody who saw the woman, the car or the incident to contact them.

Anyone who may know who this man is or who has any information about this incident is asked to come forward.

Police are also investigating another incident at about 0115 BST on the same morning in the Heol Trelai area of Ely, when a car passed a woman a few times.

Police are investigating both incidents but are not able to link them at this stage.

Detective Inspector Debbie Cooper said: "This was a very serious sexual assault and a frightening incident, but these incidents are very rare.

"I would however like to remind women travelling alone by taxi to always check the vehicle carries a hackney licence plate. Always sit in the back and pre-book a taxi if possible."

Anyone with any information about either incident is asked to contact detectives at the incident room at Fairwater police station on 029 2052 8013 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses to an attack on a 28-year-old
man who was beaten up and had his camcorder and mobile phone stolen
as he walked through the subway at Mumps.



The victim was walking home after an evening out with his family when
he was approached by three men. They kicked and punched him to the
ground before pulling his rucksack off his shoulders.

They took out his phone, camcorder, keys and credit cards before
making off at around 8.30pm on Sunday, August 15.

The victim's uncle said: "My nephew is now very nervous about going
out and has had recurring nightmares about the attack.

"Someone must know who these attackers are because they will have
been trying to offload a new camcorder and phone in the days after
the attack. I would ask anyone with a conscience to contact Oldham
Police."

The three offenders are described as Asian males, all aged around 23
and clean shaven.

One was 6ft with short dark hair and wore a grey top. Another was 5ft
3ins.

Anyone with information about either of the attacks should telephone

after a night out.



The Royton man was walking along Rochdale Road, Oldham, near to the
Texaco petrol station, when a gang of men shouted racial abuse at him
out of a car.

Five men were later arrested and have been bailed pending further
inquiries.

‘Stay calm’ message as police step up pressure on estates

POLICE have brought in a series of special measures to ensure trouble does not flare up in Oldham this weekend.

A mobile police station has been placed in Holts and 25 known troublemakers targeted as part of the high profile operation.

It comes as tensions rise in the Holts area of the town following an attack on a 21-year-old man last week.

Anthony Gilday, from Holts, was beaten up and robbed in Glodwick last Saturday as he made his way home after a night out.

His family and others in the community believe the attack was racially motivated, and that has led to racial tensions.

Now officers have pulled out all the stops to reassure both communities and make sure violence does not escalate.

Last night, 25 known activists on Holts and Alt estates received a personal visit from officers warning them not to try and whip up trouble. And police have promised that they will come down hard on anyone involved in violence.

As well as the high-profile policing, which will include extra officers in the two communities and the town centre, police will also carry out more covert operations in a bid to stop any trouble before it gets started.

Supt Keith Bentley said: “We are looking for a community focused solution to this problem and have met with members of Holts and Glodwick communities.”

More than 200 leaflets have also been handed out to residents living in Holts, emphasising the need for calm.

Supt Bentley said that police will not tolerate so-called revenge attacks of any kind.

Earlier this week an Asian taxi driver was racially abused and had his car windows smashed in the unprovoked attack. And last night a gang of white youths threw missiles at taxi drivers as they past along Abbeyhills Road.

He added: “These kind of crimes will be vigorously investigated and those responsible will feel the full weight of the law. Anyone arrested can expect to find themselves before the court the following day.”

And the leader of Oldham Council, Councillor David Jones added to the police appeal for calm this weekend.He added: “The reputation of Oldham has been damaged enough in the past. We have come a long way in the last three years and are beginning to see improvements.

“All this progress could be undone by the actions of a minority, when the majority of the community in Oldham continue to move forward.”

So far seven men have been arrested for the attack on Mr Gilday.

Two 20-year-old men from Glodwick have been bailed until Wednesday, October 27 and the other five have been bailed pending further inquiries.
