Maybe 20% or more of my friends, acquaintances, former coworkers and family members lost their jobs over the past few months.

You have no health insurance and before you get back to work, you decide to get a "free" colon cancer screening that some states provide.

Sound like a good idea?

Imagine they actually find something. Then what? You start a new job but your insurance policy does not cover "pre-existing conditions." Then what? You have to pay out of pocket for cancer treatments.

It sounds like the only entity that benefited from that "free" screening was your future insurance company.

Maybe it's best to wait until you have insurance before doing anything. Any thoughts?

Oh, so true. Many insurance companies want you to pay first, and then they compensate. So you have to have savings, which makes you liable to all sorts of taxes.

The point is if you simply wait until you have insurance before you have the procedure done, then no one should be able to call it pre-existing - and therefore insurance should cover further treatment if necessary.

These "free" screenings - like screenings for breast cancer and everything else - seem like a scam in that regard. If you don't have insurance, don't do it, because when you get insurance, insurance might not cover it if you need further treatment.

This is what happens when you have 40-million illegals in the country, an obesity epidemic and a poisoned food supply - the health care system is in shambles.
