Spanovic was sentenced in absentia to 20 years in prison in 1993 for war crimes committed in the area of Glina in 1991
ZAGREB, CROATIA – Great Britain should soon extradite Serb Milan Spanovic to Croatia. Spanovic was sentenced by a Croatian court to 20 years for war crimes, Croatian Television reported on Saturday.
The London Supreme Court accepted Croatia’s arguments that Spanovic will be allowed a fair retrial and that he would not be discriminated against because of his nationality, nor would his human rights be violated in Croatia.
Spanovic was sentenced in absentia in 1993 to 20 years in jail for war crimes committed in Croatian villages of Maja and Svracica in 1991, including opening fire on unarmed citizens, torture, looting and arson.
Since 1998 Spanovic has been hiding in Great Britain. Despite an international arrest warrant having being issued, Spanovic lived peacefully in Carshalton in Surrey for almost eight years. His past came to light in October 2008 when he received a court warning for shoplifting in Sutton.
During a number of hearings and appeals since 2006, Spanovic has managed to evade extradition until now, first complaining about the unfairness of courts in Croatia, then about his health, depression and being suicidal.
Spanovic has the right to appeal the London’s Supreme Court verdict at the International Human Rights Court in Strasbourg.
