The EU’s enlargement commissioner claims Iceland will not pass Croatia in its intent to become the 28th member of the EU.
ZAGREB, CROATIA – The European enlargement commissioner, Olli Rehn, said Iceland will not pass Croatia over in its access into the European Union, adding that Croatia will indeed become the 28th EU member, a Belgian daily, Le Soir, reported. The daily, however, wrote that it still needs to be checked if the rest of the 27 member countries share his enthusiasm.
The new Iceland’s social democratic government, which gained victory at April’s elections that were called ahead of time due to the financial crisis, on Tuesday submitted to parliament a proposal to start membership negotiations with the EU. If MPs adopt the proposal, it could be delivered to Brussels as soon as July.
Iceland will not pass Croatia over. Croatia will indeed become the 28th member of the European Union, even if negotiations with Iceland begin by the end of the year, the Belgian daily cited Rehn’s statement.
Do Rehn’s colleagues share his ‘pro-Balkan’ enthusiasm?

At a conference organised by the Deutsche Bank AG on May 15, Rehn said that it was possible that Iceland starts accession negotiations this year.
But it is clear that Croatia will become the 28th member country. Even with the theoretical possibility that Iceland speeds up and both countries join on the same day, Croatia will still be ahead because countries are made members by alphabetical order, Rehn said.
It still needs to be checked “if the remaining 27 countries share Rehn’s ‘pro-Balkan’ enthusiasm,” the Belgian daily added.
