Footie fans are terror targets

Former top cop in alert over match threat risks
FOOTBALL fans have been put on terror alert as a former police chief warned extremists could target stadiums.
Sir John Orr, honorary president of the Football Safety Officers Association and ex-chief constable of Strathclyde, said: "Terrorism could strike a football stadium in Scotland. There is no evidence this is going to happen.
" But the way of the world and the history of such episodes, particularly in some European countries, means we have to be really upfront here."
Sir John was speaking ahead of an FSOA conference at the Scottish Police College in Tulliallan.
He also believes the role of CCTV and intelligence gathering in the build-up to and during matches has never been more important.
He added: "I think that all fans should be reassured that the people who are charged with looking after them are doing exactly that and taking all reasonable steps.
"You can never, ever say that you will prevent an incident.
"But what you can do is take all material and other steps to mitigate and lessen such an event taking place."
Sir John, who led Scotland's biggest force from 1995-2001, also warned a seemingly innocuous incident can lead to tragedy.
He added: "It is crucial the lessons of the past are learned and not forgotten.
"The loss of life at the Ibrox and Hillsborough disasters are fresh in the memories.
"While there have been no significant safety failures resulting in the deaths of spectators in recent years, the potential for disaster will always remain.
"With thousands of people visiting football stadia across Scotland every weekend, crowd safety is our only priority."
