Former Backstreet Boys and manager Lou Pearlman has given authorities information in a case involving the shooting of a police officer.

Pearlman was sentenced to 25 years in prison in May for defrauding banks and investors out of over $300 million, and has been using his time inside to try and reduce his sentence by being a police informant.

His lawyer Fletcher Peacock told the Associated Press that Pearlman kept notes of conversations with Davin Smith, as well as notes he made after eavesdropping on Smith’s interactions with other prisoners.

Smith is accused of killing a police officer in a robbery that went wrong. He pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

Peacock said he would ask a judge to consider Pearlman's cooperation in future requests to lower his sentence, says the report.

Meanwhile, Peacock says that Pearlman would have come forward with the information, regardless of how it affected his own sentence.

"He's just trying to do what he can to help authorities” he said "Quite frankly, Mr. Pearlman would have come forward with it whether he had a case pending or not. It's just his obligation as a citizen."

As previously reported, the judge who sentenced Pearlman has offered to reduce his sentence by one month for every million dollars he returns to investors. So far only a few million has materialised.
