Local Fidesz officials follow Jobbik in opposing Roma cultural centers

Fidesz officials in several towns, including Hungary’s fourth-largest city, Miskolc, have bowed to pressure from the far-right Jobbik party to renege on plans to open local Roma culture and education centers, Magyar Narancs reports.

While Fidesz mayors and city councils have initially welcomed plans for the construction of such a culture and education center in their towns, protests and petitions from Jobbik activists have led officials in Miskolc and Székesfehérvár to withdraw their support for the project.

This past week, the mayor of Ózd, whose town council caused an international uproar earlier this summer when it shut off the public water supply many of the town’s Roma rely upon for safe drinking water, announced that Ózd will reverse its May decision to support the construction of a Roma center. The mayor cited social tensions as the reason for the change. (A picture from a demonstration against the planned center is above left.)

The New Széchenyi Plan, the cornerstone of the Fidesz government’s strategy for using European Union funding to promote a range of development programs, calls for the establishment of new Roma culture and education centers.

"I bet if they wanted to put the money into a center for ethnic Magyars abroad you all would be for that!"

That goes without saying. After all ethnic Magyars don't struggle with the concept of using soap and water to wash themselves or making a living from work.
