Another fabricated story churned out by Novaya Gazeta

18 October 2019 - 19:15

On October 17 this year, an article entitled Pack Up to Leave was posted on the Novaya Gazeta website. The newspaper’s editorial board might have seen the release of this material as a response to the repetitive requests by the Foreign Ministry Information and Press Department to correct gross factual mistakes in the newspaper’s previous article They Served Murder of July 30 this year and to publish a relevant correction notice in one of its forthcoming issues.

If we may refresh your memory, the main complaint about the July article in Novaya Gazeta was that it contained a misleading assertion by special correspondent Irina Gordiyenko that “the personal belongings of journalists [Kirill Radchenko, Orkhan Dzhemal and Alexander Rastorguyev] killed in the Central African Republic, which are kept at the Russian Embassy in this African country, have not yet been taken back to Moscow. Neither the Investigative Committee, nor the Foreign Ministry or the Defence Ministry did anything about it.”

We want to emphasise again that by the publication date of the article, the above-mentioned personal belongings, which are seen as evidence in the criminal case, had been sent from the Central African Republic. Unfortunately, the editors did not deem it necessary to contact the Foreign Ministry for comment while the article was being written in order to check the information in the proper manner.

We have to emphasise that Novaya Gazeta has failed to admit making a mistake in its article of October 17. More than that, in its trademark provocative manner, it is trying to hold to its position, which is not backed by any verifiable facts. It is worthy of note that Novaya Gazeta journalists did not ask the Foreign Ministry for comment while working on the article Pack Up to Leave either.

Given the above, we are again calling on the newspaper’s editorial board to look closely into the information on the progress in investigating the murder of Russian journalists in the Central African Republic that is posted on the Foreign Ministry website and also to correct factual mistakes in the article They Served Murder of July 30 this year and publish a correction notice in the print version of the newspaper.
