Something interesting. With the arrival of the Nazis came freer speech:
In August 1940, the Vichy government repealed the Law Marchandeau, which had suppressed explicit antisemitism in the French press. This meant that France's not inconsiderable number of otherwise highly gifted antisemite could publish what they liked.
