(from the Bolton article on Zimbardo's "warning")

"Phillip Zimbardo is famous for the 1971 Stanford prison experiment, in which 24 students were asked to play the roles of 'guards' and 'prisoners' in a mock prison at Standford University. Intended to last for two weeks, the experiment was abandoned after six days, after the previously normal 'guards' became extremely sadistic and the 'prisoners' became submissive and depressed.

(from the wiki article on Zimbardo)

"The experiment is believed to demonstrate the extreme impressionability and obedience of people when they are presented with a supporting ideology and power."

Once the guards were able to get into the cells, they stripped the inmates naked, tore apart the beds and the cell, and put the prisoners who had started the rebellion in solitary confinement. As all nine guards could not be on duty at once, they began rewarding the prisoners for good behavior. The prisoners who had not been involved in starting the riot were allowed to lie in their beds, wash themselves and brush their teeth and eat while those who had started the riot were not allowed to. The guards continued to use tormenting tactics to break up the prisoners relations with each other to avoid further organized resistance. In the case with one prisoner, who was a smoker, the guards were able to control his behavior because they decided when and if he was allowed to smoke."

(from the article, below)

Amazon Inc founder Jeff Bezos and his wife have made what may be the biggest donation to the cause of gay marriage, contributing $2.5 million to a Washington state campaign to legalize same-sex nuptials there, the campaign said on Friday.

"This is a history-making gift," Washington United for Marriage campaign manager Zach Silk said of the Bezos donation.

"I think it shows our goal of standing up for all Washington families is shared by many people, including Jeff Bezos and his wife," Silk said.

Silk said his campaign's volunteer finance chair, Jennifer Cast, sent the Bezos an email last weekend seeking their support. Cast, who is a lesbian and was a senior manager at Amazon for more than seven years, knows the couple personally.

In the email, Silk said Cast wrote to the couple: "We need help from straight people. To be very frank, we need help from wealthy straight people who care about us and who want to help us win."
