Police: DNA Links Man To Five Slayings

BALTIMORE -- Authorities said DNA evidence links a man to the slayings of five Baltimore senior citizens over the past six years.

Police arrested and charged Raymont Hopewell on Monday with murder in the killings of five people, ranging in age from 60 to 88.

WBAL-TV 11 News reporter Kerry Cavanaugh reported Hopewell had nothing to say as detectives left Baltimore City Police Headquarters.

The first of the five slayings took place in 1999 and the most recent occurred in August 2005.

"We had links to some of those cases ... (and) there is absolutely, positively indisputable evidence that he is in fact our sole suspect in all of these cases," said Maj. Richard Fahlteich, the head of the department's homicide unit.

Authorities had arrested and charged him last fall in the slaying of Carlton Crawford, 83.

Police said they came to focus on Hopewell as a suspect after a victim's casual comment before she died. They said Lydia "Roweena" Wingfield, 78, made a comment that she grew sick of a man named "Money" lurking around her house.

She was stabbed in her west Baltimore home in September. In the weeks following her killing, relatives identified that person as Hopewell.

Police also charged Hopewell with murder in the slayings of Sadie Mack, 78; Sarah Cannon, 88; and Constance Willif, 60. Fahlteich said one was killed in nursing facility and the others were killed at their homes throughout the city.

Authorities said their investigation continues to determine whether more victims exist.
