Default Romanian Gypsie raped woman to learn English

A Romanian vagrant who claimed he violently raped a woman so he would go to prison where he could sleep in comfort and learn English has been granted his wish after a judge handed him an indeterminate sentence for the crime.

Ali Majlat, 35, carried out the sex attack at Wakefield's Kirkgate station just days after he was released from prison for burglary, Leeds Crown Court was told.

Majlat, who has a string of convictions in Romania, had travelled to the UK to visit his brother who was already serving a sentence at HMP Wakefield for rape and attempted murder.

He carried out a burglary on a commercial premises and after his release from prison in Oxfordshire he travelled up to Yorkshire intending to visit his brother.

The court was told he was refused entry to the high-security prison and spent the next couple of days sleeping rough before carrying out the attack on a 21-year-old woman last October.

The court was told that as his victim tried to escape, Majlat chased her into a station underpass and raped her.

His terrified victim was punched and kicked and dragged to the ground where Majlat straddled her and began throttling her.

She said she recalled thinking: "This is it. I'm 21 and I'm dead."

Following the 10-minute attack, his victim sought help from passengers on a train that had arrived at the station.

A conductor also used swabs to recover samples from the victim's clothing which was used to obtain a DNA profile.

The court was told Majlat fled to London with the victim's mobile phone but he was spotted by police who recognised his description and he was arrested.

Majlat admitted rape and robbery at a previous hearing where he made his startling admission of wanting to go to jail.

However, at Friday's hearing, Majlat's barrister Mark McKone suggested his client had not carried out the rape purely so he could go to prison.

He said it was not planned and it was carried out when his client was feeling low.

However, he was challenged by the judge Alistair McCallum who said the reason he committed this "awful" attack was "in order to go to prison to get accommodation and learn English".

The judge said the nature of the attack meant it "doesn't get much worse than this", adding: "You strike me as a person who is absolutely worthless to our community."

Majlat was told he must serve at least five years before he can come before the parole board.

The judge decided he was dangerous and recommended deportation, adding: "When it is right for you to be deported, you should be."

He also said he hoped there would be procedures in place to alert border officials to criminals entering from the EU.

Majlat has 11 previous convictions in Romania, including attempted robbery and theft.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Dave Shipperlee, from British Transport Police, said: "This was a violent attack on a young woman, the like of which we rarely see on Britain's railways.

"The serious and sustained nature of the attack shocked the officers investigating this crime and their absolute determination to give the 21-year-old victim of this attack justice in this case meant that Majlat was tracked down in London within five days.

"His later assertion that he carried out this attack to secure a place to eat and sleep and to be able to learn English is callous beyond belief.

"Majlat has been brought to justice and I hope that that will go some small way to mitigating the pain and suffering of the victim of this crime."

Police said the victim remained traumatised by the attack and suffered from anxiety, is fearful of men and isolated places.
