The Happy Household
Seven Things to Have at Hand if You're Moving...

By Helen Hande-Baskette (pron.: bas-KET)

This is my happy list of things-that-make-for-easier-moves. Not the obvious stuff so much as the stuff you might not think of...

1) BIG powerful flashlight. I believe it was Coelacanth Martin in Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, who laid down for all times: "Before a man can do anything, he's got to see what he's doing."

2) 3-into-2 plugs (especially for older housing)

3) power strips - You can never be too rich or too thin...or have too many power strips, that '70s ad lady quoting Wallis Simpson forgot to mention

4) good medium-sized boxes - just to keep things under control at the general (room) level: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, main room.

5) master list with phone numbers of all utilities - realize that new DEPOSITS may be required just to turn stuff on...you may get the money back eventually, but still need to come up with a sizeable amount up front

6) BIG marker, for use on boxes, esp if they're for longer-term storage so you don't have to go back through them. also should keep a record on computer. For WN especially, it's good to have FEW possessions and to have an INVENTORY of them, on paper or computer or both.

7) password file - so that everything is in one place and you can see ALL the places you need to inform of a change in your address/phone, etc.

And one last one...: ziploc bags: perfect for one-place storage of small screws, holders, pins, nails, assoreted little things that help you hang and store. Ziploc bags are one of the most underrated inventions of the 20th century, nearly infinite in usefulness.

Yours for a Better Indoors,

Helen Hande-Baskette
