Belgian Prime Minister pledges to continue to fight against anti-Semitism

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel met with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin who is visiting Europe.

At a meeting in Brussels with President Reuven Rivlin on Monday, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel pledged to continue to fight anti-Semitism in his country.

Rivlin for his part promised that Israel will stand shoulder to shoulder with Belgium during difficult times and in the struggle against terrorism.

Michel said that Belgium is interested in deepening and strengthening its political and security dialogue with Israel.

Rivlin told Michel that Israel is concerned at the increase in BDS activities in Belgium while simultaneously acknowledging that BDS is not as significant as the impression its activists would like to convey, and has had minimal effect on Israel’s economy. Nonetheless, even minor BDS activity serves to create the wrong impression, said Rivlin.

On the subject of anti-Semitism, Rivlin said that there is no doubt today of the connection between terrorism and anti-Semitism, but added that Islamic Jihad is not limited to people of the Jewish faith but is directed against people of all faiths. Michel said that he had zero tolerance for anti-Semitism.

He warned that it was dangerous to wait and see where current anti-Semitism will lead and what its impact will be on non-Jews.

On the subject of terror, Michel said that it was imperative for the intelligence services of both countries to work in closer cooperation because in the long run they had the same goal.

Rivlin is due to address the European Parliament in Hebrew on Wednesday.
