Almost 75% of young children in Belgium’s second largest city have migrant backgrounds

An increasing number of children in Belgium’s Antwerp have migrant backgrounds. While the number of native Belgians is decreasing, the number of people with a migrant background is surging.

Statistics from the city office show that in the group of children aged between 0 and 9 years, 74.10% have migrant backgrounds. In the group aged between 10 and 19 years the number of children with Non-Belgian backgrounds is at almost 70%.

The numbers show a rapid change in the city’s population. An ever increasing number of inhabitants of Belgium’s second largest city are of foreign origin. At this moment 58% of people living in the city have a migrant background. Most of which are North Africans.

The increasing number of people with migrant backgrounds also has its effects on unemployment. Almost 75% of unemployed in Antwerp are from this group.
