David Ahenakew
This has to be regarded as a sad day for the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.
Once regarded as the most organized and effective First Nations organizations in the country, the FSIN is well on its way to rendering itself irrelevant.
There is no better proof of that than the chiefs' move to reinstate David Ahenakew to his seat on the FSIN senate. This can only be regarded as a vote of confidence in a man who has publicly endorsed mass murder. This, after all, is the man whose considered view is Adolf Hitler "cleaned up a hell of a lot of things."....
....That the FSIN could choose to ignore his record and restore him to an honorary post within Native government is not only an affront to Jewish people, it's a stick in the eye to society at large.
The message is that First Nations government in Saskatchewan cares not a whit about Ahenakew's long-standing biases. The chiefs intend to look after their own, no matter how much it smells....
...The question for Chief Lawrence Joseph is this. Why should anyone take his organization seriously when it can brush off an endorsement of the Holocaust as nothing more than a personal idiosyncrasy?
