Default Another diet. I must be bored. More, a manifesto.

How to prepare

In the words of Hunter S. Thompson, "Big dark, coming soon," Things have gotten stunningly bad, and are going to get far worse. These are some rules of life designed to help you prepare, if indeed, that is even possible. Starting with a diet. The diet is after my tastes. If you like different, make your own diet. This diet is about as good a diet as can be without giving up any type of food. It will keep you healthier and fitter than you would be if you ate the standard crap, and yet it will not get your digestion so pampered that you will fall apart if forced to eat standard crap. When things get really bad, as they are bound to do, you don't want your body to have forgotten how to digest the filth that most people live on, that is, crap. This diet is not a cheap diet. You want a cheap diet...easy: Watch the discounts ads for the supermarkets. Buy 30 TV dinners at cheapest price. That, beans rice, cheap peanut butter, cheap bread. That's cheap. You will be lucky to have one hemorrhoid-bloodied bowel movement a week.

//** Some guidelines (for this diet, not the cheap diet) **//

*) Include sea vegetables in diet
*) Include fermented vegetables in diet
*) Avoid all chemical additives, especially corn derived additives
*) Avoid polyunsaturated fats
*) Avoid sugar
*) Skip meals, sometimes only eat one small meal in a day
*) Fast for 24, even 36 hours occasionally (optional - work up to this)
*) Eat junk food once a week (your system needs to remember)
*) Get natural sunlight daily - no sunscreen

//** Eating out **//

*) Normal restaurants (order meat, fish, fowl, vegetables, rice - don't eat any bread)
*) Asian restaurants are safest
*) Mexican restaurants (order small meal, corn, not flour, tortillas, skip the corn chips)
*) Middle Eastern restaurants (small meal)
*) Indian restaurants (small meal)
*) Burger joint (maybe a salad, or better yet, eat crap - your system needs to remember)

//* Exercise **//

*) Go to bed before 10:00 PM
*) Rise early each day, perhaps 5:00 AM
*) Occasionally break the routine (who knows what the routine will be in the camps)
*) Occasionally sleep on the floor (when the SHTF you may be sleeping in dumpsters)
*) Mild stretching each morning
*) Walk as much as practical
*) Start to use mass transit as much as possible (might as well get used to it now)
*) Short lifting routine two or three times a week (optional - work is better)
*) This is the key: physical work, real work - clean house, garden, stay busy all day long

This was designed for a 67 year old mostly-retired man. You young guys can do much more physical shit.

I haven't had fast food in 5 years (gives me the runs) but I have an iron stomach otherwise. Except cheese. Cheese can die.

Anyway, sometimes when I want to try something new I'll just eat canned food straight out of the can. No heating. Even with those Ramen soups I'll just pour in cold water and breakup the noodle. Its all the same nutrients except your taste buds aren't pampered. Taste buds are not necessary for survival.

Thats basically true;
the more complicated a nutrition plan is the less likely someone is to follow it for any length time and unlikely to make it a regular habit.

Look at some of the sites on Paleo diets. I respect Atkins, but the Paleo diets are more modern, somewhat easier to follow for a long time, and not all the commercial stuff Atkins corp. started cranking out.

Here is a strict Paleo diet. Look at this and then search the web.

Some people add hard cheese and yogurt. Maybe a glass of wine.

Gotta go talk Physics with my old bud at the Pizza joint. He lives within a few miles of the Colorado Springs fires. It will be interesting to hear his take. Normally he sends me an email about this time before the Thursday Physics/Math/Beer(for me lately, wine) meeting. I haven't got the email. I hope he shows up.

High Protein, low carb diets such as *Atkins* do work, and they can be done for medium amounts of time. Of course, any time one starts a dietary plan, please consult a physician to make sure you don't have any latent hazards. Just two of the worries about a high protein diet are diabetes and kidney failure.

That being said - most bodybuilders are on a high protein diet of some sorts, as the protein is good for muscle repair, and being off almost all carbohydrates, the body burns fat for it's fuel instead of carbs.

I had an injury last year that prevented me from being able to continue my workout routine, and life on the job (road) is *not* conducive to working out on a regular basis. Now that my road time is up for the next 3 months (and I'm healed), I kick started my workout by doing Atkins for a month. I dropped between 15 and 20 pounds of excess weight from eating on the road, and have started working out again daily.

High protein/fat, low carb diets work, but I don't recommend them for every body.

Now that I'm aggressively exercising every day, my body needs a few carbs for quick energy to keep from gassing out. At this stage, it's pretty easy - portion control. I eat all foods (none of that fast food crap - my body hates it) that can be purchased and prepared easily. I still make sure my diet is protein heavy, but I count calories, as opposed to fat/protein/carbs. Much easier to live with.

But you do know that paleo is just capitalism at its core. I think lew rockwell wrote about that.
