The Jews in Lady Queenborough's 'Occult Theocrasy'


Recently in my article on Edith Starr Miller's; aka Lady Queenborough, popular 1933 work 'Occult Theocrasy' (1) I pointed out that the claims made about her; and some of her sources, being an anti-Semitic are simply untrue.

This is because being an anti-Semite is actually a very precise statement of an intellectual positon an individual holds and is not the crude blanket term for 'criticism of jews and Judaism' and the demand for collective hatred and punishment against said individual that it has become.

Defined simply an anti-Semite is someone who opposes or critiques jews based on the fact that they believe that jews are definable and demonstrable racial and/or ethnic group that operates in their own interests.

What it is not is opposition/criticism of Judaism; which is anti-Judaism, or opposition/criticism of Zionism, which is anti-Zionism.

These three different points of opposition/criticism; anti-Semitism, anti-Judaism and anti-Zionism, can be held together or in any combination. So; for example, many anti-Semites up till the 1950s were not anti-Zionists, while many anti-Zionists today are also anti-Judaism, but not anti-Semites. (2)

The reason this is so is due to the recognition that anti-Semitism is a very specific intellectual position; rather than a blanket term covering any criticism of jews and/or Judaism, which then highlights the fact that opposition/criticism of jews is not ipso facto anti-Semitic and also allows us to see that being anti-Semitic does not make one automatically wrong or irrational either.

When we understand this then it becomes readily apparent that far fewer people can actually be classed as anti-Semites than jews would have the non-jewish public and intellectuals believe. This then leads us on to Miller's work given that she has been accused of being anti-Semitic by her several published critics.

When we actually read her work; as opposed to her published critics who from what I can see have actually skimmed it rather than read it, then we immediately note that Miller explicitly states that she is writing to defend against a threat to 'Christian civilization' (3) and; like many ardent British Christians at the time, (4) supported fascism as an anti-atheist, anti-communist and anti-crime force. (5)

Miller's thesis reflects this Christian worldview as she posits a dualism between the pure spiritual monotheism of Christians (as well as that of Zoroaster among others) (6) with the dualistic beliefs of magical and revolutionary occultic adepts. (7)

She asserts that Moses was such an adept who was skilled in the magical arts, which he learned from his father-in-law Jethro: an Ethiopian black magician and; according to Miller, the founding father of Voodoo. (8) As well as arguing that Moses kept this magical art alive within Judaism in worship of Yahweh; (9) a god of vengeance completely unlike the Christian and Zoroastrian conceptions of divinity, (10) and that this overwhelming vengeful aspect derived from the fact that jews in Egypt were an undisciplined rabble who needed to be frightened into some semblance of order and discipline by Moses. (11)

We should not however mistake Miller on this point: she doesn't view jews as a racial or ethnic group or Judaism as a religion (indeed she argues; correctly even if her identification of who was is incorrect, that the jews were not the first monotheists), (12) but rather asserts that jews are secret subversive society and that Judaism is simply a rite or sect of a wider religiously-based conspiracy. (13)

Having made her thesis regarding the 'occult conspiracy' allegedly operating against 'Christian civilization' Miller spends the vast majority of her work compiling quotes, facts and; occasionally, bits of gossip that support her postion.

We learn; for example, that the Pharisees (who the modern jews are descended from) were the first true example of the secret society she describes. As is demonstrated in their attempts to subvert and overthrow the Sadduccees, while putting on the mask of being 'of the simple people', but actually holding the 'simple people' in utter contempt. (14) She finds proof of this in Jesus' attitude to the Pharisees (15) and argues that the reason the Pharisees hated Jesus so much was not because he claimed to be the long-awaited Messiah, but rather because he wished to remove them from their privileged positions and worldly authority. (16)

Meanwhile Miller regards the Sadduccees and Karaites (a sect of jews who rejected the Talmud and created a new body of written law in early medieval period) as not being part of this secret society, because they have; to Miller's mind, rejected Rabbinic Judaism and thus the secret society. (17)

This is because the Sadduccees and Karaites have rejected the Talmud and Schulchan Aruch, which; accordingly to Miller, are the legal code of this secret society. (18) She informs us that these works teach initiates (i.e. jews) a double morality where they are taught to be kind and highly ethical towards their fellows, but utterly hostile and highly unethical towards those who are 'intiated' into the secrest of Judaism. (19)

All this can be taught to non-jewish converts to Judaism as a kind of 'way to power' (20) and is the reason why jews are eternally politically subversive and revolutionary (21) in so far as politics is nothing less than the pursuit power and conspirators are permanently seeking this power. (22)

As part of this: Miller sees the conspiracy among the jews-cum-secret society being carried on by ben Zakki (who famously endorsed the Bar Kochba revolt against the Romans) and ben Yohai. (23)

Ben Yohai's alleged creation of the Cabala plays a major role in Miller's schema given that it is this school of 'initiate mysticism' that she uses as the basis for linking a large number of disparate individuals and groups together by their shared interest (be it passing or otherwise) in the Cabala or magical practices more broadly (which she views; wrongly, as being one and the same regardless of their external aspect).

Indeed it is the Cabala; or the 'inner secrets' of Judaism, which are the 'higher teachings' that Moses first taught the jews (24) that allows the jews the ability to be the puppet masters of politics and high finance according to Miller. (25)

This power she places behind many; if not the majority, of problems; political, intellectual and social, that had; or were, afflicted the world and changed it for the worse: citing everything from the Bolshevik revolution (which she also regards as a form of gnosticism), (26) the split between Sunni and Shi'ite Islam, (27) the Great Fire of London, (28) the Young Italy movement (29) and the Young Turks seizing power in the Ottoman Empire as example of this. (30)

Now to my mind Miller's thesis lacks any sort of evidential proof as she does not; in spite of her attempts, rigourously document her claims about the existence of this conspiracy and more importantly she offers little to no evidence of her vital early contentions about the origins of Judaism as a 'secret society' in Egypt with Moses.

This undermines Miller's whole thesis as without this vital plank being sufficiently evidenced (which it clearly isn't since much of it is drawn from nineteenth century 'magical' traditions not from a solid appraisal of the jewish and non-jewish sources from the period under consideration) then her contention collapses as easily as a pack of cards.

Her thesis is further undermined because she places her belief in the reality of the supernatural/paranormal at the heart of the equation and thus; like William Guy Carr, (31) the logic ends up in a intellectual farce with devilish forces (black magicians in this case) being completely unable to use any of their 'magic' to achieve their ends other than in private when nobody is looking in spite of this magical use being allegedly at the heart of their power to fight the forces of good.

In other words: they are only powerful; magically speaking, when nobody else is around to be affected or ensorcelled.

Not very likely to be the truth is it really?

It is also worth stating that whle Miller's thesis itself must be discarded as lacking evidence and being intuitively incorrect due its supernatural/paranormal assumptions: that doesn't mean she didn't get a lot of individual points right.

For example she correctly points out that; in relation to the Protocols of Zion, du Chayla and Princess Catherine Radziwill are nonsense witnesses to the Protocols allegedly being a fabrication (as both came forward late and have clear ulterior motives for claiming what they did [they also contradicted one another incidentally]). This indeed has been vindicated by recent scholarship on the Protocols; notably by Cesare de Michelis, (32) and indicates that Miller on specific points cannot be so easily dismissed as her overarching thesis can.

Having thus discarded the idea that Miller's thesis is accurate: we should also remark that the foregoing description of her thesis also makes clear that she was not in any way, shape or form anti-Semitic.

This is for the very simple reason that she viewed jews as a sect or rite and explicitly stated that they were not a racial or ethnic group in her view and also referred to the fact that non-jews could join the 'secret society' in their conspiracy by converting and; in time, be taught and enabled to practice all the 'higher mysteries' of the group in the form of Cabala.

Anti-Judaism Miller certainly was, anti-Zionist she may have possibly been but she certainly was not anti-Semitic!
