Default Did Nostradamus predict the rise of Hitler and the Third Reich?

Did Nostradamus predict the rise of Hitler and the Third Reich?

Michel de Nostradame, better known to history as Nostradamus, was the grandson of jews then resident in France (1) and is probably, along with Mother Shipton, the best known of non-religious prophets-cum-fortune tellers.

I will deal with Nostradamus' life and career in a separate (and much longer) article, but it is enough to say that in spite of the various myths that swirl about him like a miasma. Nostradamus was an incompetent astrologer who couldn't even cast a horoscope correctly (and his contemporaries knew it), (2) who lied about having a medical degree (3) and who systematically plagiarized his famous 'prophecies' from several different authors. (4)

Here I wanted to briefly address the claim that Nostradamus predicted the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. These are based on three verses that use the word 'Hister' or 'Iter', which proponents of Nostrasdamus' prophetic qualities have long trumpeted as referring to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich.

The most commonly cited example is Century II, Verse 24, which states:

'Beasts, wild with hunger, swim across the rivers,
The greater part of the field will be against the Hister.
The great one will be dragged in an iron cage,
When the German child will see the Rhine.' (5)

The problem with this equation of 'Hitler' with 'Hister' or 'Iter' is six fold.

In the first instance 'Hister' or 'Iter' phonetically sounds nothing like 'Hitler'; it is just close enough to seem like it might.

In the second instance the 'Hister' reference is to the river Danube, not a person, as it is the Latin translation of the Greek name for said river. (6)

In the third instance Nostradamus tells us in his Almanac of 1554 that 'Iter' is another name for the river Danube. (7)

In the fourth instance interpreting these as the Danube makes sense of why, in all five of the instances of 'Hister' or 'Iter', Nostradamus always mentions the Rhine ('Rin' or 'Ryn') in the same verse. (8) To put it simply; he is using the Rhine and Danube as geographical references points to illustrate what tract of territory he is referring to.

In the fifth instance; all these mentions are Nostradamus' plagiarizing other authors.

Century II, Verse 24 is copied from Poggius' 'De Varietate Fortunae' (c. 1430) (9)
Century IV, Verse 68 is copied from Pseudo-Methodius' 'Mirabilis Liber' (c. 1522-1523) (10)
Century V, Verse 29 is from the same source as the above. (11)

In the sixth instance prior to the advent of Hitler to power in 1933; the words 'Hister' and 'Iter' were used by Nostradamus' apologists to neither suggest or interpret anything about the rise of Hitler and the Third Reich, but were used rather as geographic reference to the river Danube. (12)

As Ovason remarks: 'Once Adolf Hitler came to power, the word Hister took on a double meaning, and was immediately seized upon as a remarkable advance notice of the Fuhrer.' (13)

This rather adroitly points to the reactionary non-prophetic nature of Nostradamus interpretations in they are only ever comprehensible after the event, which makes them about as useless and 'prophetic' as a chocolate teapot. (14)

After all as Lemesurier says: 'Undated prophecies have a much longer shelf-life than dated ones!' (15)

In other words; Nostradamus wrote absolutely nothing about Adolf Hitler and the rise of the Third Reich and people interpreting him as suggesting such have simply been gulled by Nostradamus' literary plagiarism and the imaginative reactionary interpretations of twentieth century authors.

To quote the contemporary anonymous French critic 'Hercules le Francois': Nostradamus 'preys so well on people's simple credulity... that by his babble, his double meanings and double entendres... he reduces to superstitious events the days for getting married, for travelling, for transacting business, even for when to wear a white shirt.' In WW2, British Intelligence actually printed doctored versions of the Nostradamus quatrains that supposedly mention Hitler on propaganda leaflets and dropped them on German-occupied Europe to make people think Nostradamus predicted Hitler's defeat.

Considering that Europe had been through over a thousand years of constant warfare, predicting future warfare was not that much of a prediction.
I notice he never predicted a Melbourne Cup winner
