Haditha report 'will back up US execution allegations'

A criminal investigation into the deaths of 24 Iraqis in the town of Haditha last year is close to completion and will support allegations that they were deliberately killed by a group of US marines, it was reported yesterday.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which is investigating the killings in Haditha last November, was not allowed to exhume bodies but interviewed survivors and members of the marine company involved.

A spokesman said a statement was being prepared, but US media last night quoted Pentagon officials as saying that the provisional report backed claims that the Iraqi victims in Haditha had not been caught in the crossfire but had been shot deliberately.

The official version of the incident was that a marine detachment had been hit by a roadside bomb, which killed one US serviceman and 15 civilian bystanders. But residents said the civilians had been gunned down in cold blood, with women and children among those rounded up in the room of a nearby house and murdered.
A separate investigation into the possibility of a cover-up by senior officers has already been delivered to the Pentagon, but has not yet been published. According to leaks, it found no evidence of a conspiracy to hide the facts but it did find that officers had failed to scrutinise inconsistencies in the official reports by the marines involved.

The incident has the potential to become to the Iraq war what the My Lai incident was to Vietnam, an American massacre that severely damages the prestige of US forces and undermines support for the war at home. Lawyers for one of the marines under investigation, Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich, yesterday sued a Democratic congressman, John Murtha, for declaring in May that innocent Iraqis had been killed "in cold blood".

The lawsuit claimed that Pentagon officials "who have briefed or leaked information to Mr Murtha deliberately provided him with inaccurate and false information" and that the congressman subsequently "has made repeated statements ... that are defamatory" to Staff Sgt Wuterich and his fellow marines.

In another incident, seven marines and a sailor have been charged with abduction and murder following the killing of an Iraqi man in Hamdania, west of Baghdad.

Spanish anniversary raises questions

Europe this week marks a momentous anniversary: 70 years ago, Spanish generals rose in a revolt that led to three years of civil war and ultimately the defeat of the elected republican government and the establishment of a fascist dictatorship under Francisco Franco, who ruled Spain until his death in 1975.

The Spanish Civil War polarised opinion worldwide. The Spanish fascists were backed by Hitler and Mussolini, and also by the conservative establishment across much of the western world (Australia's own BA Santamaria first came to prominence as a supporter of Franco). The republicans were supported by leftists and democrats of various stripes, but also by Stalin's Soviet Union, which sent some military aid and organised volunteer brigades from around the world to fight in Spain.

It remains divisive today. A poll for Spain's El Mundo this week found that 30% of Spaniards still believe Franco's revolt was justified, including fully half of those who vote for the centre-right opposition. Although the restoration of democracy in Spain was based on a tacit agreement to forget the past, the current government has taken steps to revive discussion of the war and rehabilitate the victims of Franco's rule. As one activist said, "it's like a psychoanalysis because we have to talk about our past to be a healthy society".

It's a discussion that could usefully be repeated in other countries, because there are lessons for both sides of politics from the Spanish experience. The left needs to remember that in an important sense it's not "the economy, stupid"; what really fires people's loyalties, what they will fight and die for, is something much deeper. Democracy, progress, secularism, the masses versus the elite – these were the ideals of the left in Spain, and no party can claim to be on the left if it abandons them.

The right in turn has to question why so many of its leaders were able to embrace fascism, just as in more recent times they have supported right-wing dictatorships across the world. If today they wonder why so many people are sceptical, for example, of George W Bush's claims to be spreading democracy in the Middle East, they should look at their own history, and consider whether the demon of fascism has yet been completely exorcised.

Estonia launches another brutal attack against Soviet past

The Estonian authorities are preparing to launch another attack on the Baltic state’s Soviet past. The monument to the Soviet Warrior-Liberator may be removed from the centre of Tallinn. In the eyes of the Estonian authorities and nationalists it is not a sign of respect to the people who gave up their lives to liberate their country from the Nazis, but a symbol of the “occupation”.

Last Saturday a small (although maybe 300 people is a lot for the Estonian capital), but extremely vociferous rally took place in the centre of Tallinn involving supporters of nationalist organizations. People both “for” and “against” took part in the rally. There were those “against” the presence of the monument in the centre of the city, and those “for” it to be placed somewhere a bit further out of sight. So that it does not remind everyone how the small Baltic nation suffered under the yoke of Moscow … Furthermore, some of the more tempestuous Estonian guys suggested not simply removing the monument, but demonstratively blowing it up. Especially fervent people even started to wrap ropes around the statue in order to clearly demonstrate to those present how they should treat “these kinds of monuments”.

On Saturday night several heavily drunk young people poured paint over the statue. The vandalism of the “freedom fighters” did not at all provoke the reaction which the nationalists had been hoping for – in the morning some inhabitants of the Estonian capital brought flowers to the monument…

The Estonian Head of State Andrus Ansip also got involved, and it emerged that he too had long been disturbed by the presence of the statue. The monument to the Warrior-Liberator “is a symbol of the occupation and it should have been removed to another place a long time ago”, just as was done 15-18 years ago with other Soviet monuments, Ansip said on Monday.

According to him, the monument, which originally stood as an epitaph, “has become a symbol of the occupation which cannot be tolerated any longer”. At the same time, the prime minister suggested that this problem should be solved correctly and within the law: “It can be transferred to Siselinn cemetery. If it emerges that soldiers were buried under the monument, then their remains will have to be reburied.” Of course it would not make a good impression for the head of state to climb onto the monument with some rope or pour paint all over it… Although you get the impression that if he had wanted to, Mr Ansip would not have deprived himself of this “pleasure”.

In 50 years time Australia will be a Muslim state

Scholars and politicians are convinced that Australia is threatening its own existence. In the words of one member of Australian Parliament, it will not be possible for the country to know for another fifty years. It is everyone’s fault – the medical drug RU486 which guards against unwanted pregnancy by interfering with the action of hormone progesterone which is crucial to the normal progress of pregnancy.

The drug has proved effective and is very popular in over thirty countries including Australia. At this time many immigrants are having many children. A large proportion of these immigrants are Muslim and as is well known Islamic law forbids abortions and the use of contraceptives.

Australian Member of Parliament Danna Vale thinks that the use of the tablets, about which there have been many serious discussions, could have catastrophic consequences. The birth-rate in the country is at a critically low level. If RU486 is made available, the situation will become yet worse.

Vale cites the words of an imam at one mosque in Sydney who claims that within half a century Australia will be a Muslim state.

“I did not believe him, but if we look at the birth-rate. . . . We are dying out of our own accord: every year about 100 000 abortions are registered. If this number increases over the next fifty years, then we will only have 5 million Australians,” announced Vale

The government inCanberra, considering the numerous opponents to the drug, is now looking into the issue of whether to allow RU486 to be sold in the country.

However, Vale has had to apologize for her comments which have been met with criticism by Muslim society in Australia. Members of her own party have reproached Vale’s comments about the link between the tablets and the spreading of Islam.

In connection with the idea of Muslim migrants, many recall the disturbances which occurred throughout Australia in December of last year. At that time the question of religious tolerance came to the fore.

Meanwhile, the RU 486 tablets have also been a talking-point amongst Italians. Silvio Berlusconi, in particular, is against abortions. He imposed restrictions on the import of the drug into Italy. Indeed the topic of abortion and the issue of birth-rate became the main theme of his pre-election campaign.

This theme will become prominent for most countries in Western Europe. The problem of the increasing average age in Europe has become especially pertinent amidst the increasing level of migrants and principally those of Muslim faith.

At the end of the 20th century the population of Western Europe was 729 million. Today it is decreasing. Over the next few decades, it is expected that the population will decrease at a rate of two million people a year. As a result by 2050 the population of Europe will probably will 75 million less than today’s. These figures are of course based on the indigenous population. The number of inhabitant of Europe will actually become much larger than now but it will not be the previous “Old-World.”

Swedish Welfare State Collapses as Immigrants Wage War

Last year I wrote an article about how Swedish society is disintegrating and is in danger of collapsing, at least in certain areas and regions. The country that gave us Bergman, ABBA and Volvo could become known as the Bosnia of northern Europe. The “Swedish model” would no longer refer to a stable and peaceful state with an advanced economy, but to a Eurabian horror story of utopian multiculturalism, socialist mismanagement and runaway immigration. Some thought I was exaggerating, and that talk of the possibility of a future civil war in Sweden was pure paranoia. Was it?

In a new sociological survey (pdf in Swedish, with brief English introduction) entitled “Vi krigar mot svenskarna” (“We’re waging a war against the Swedes”), young immigrants in the troubled city of Malmö have been interviewed about why they are involved in crime. Although it is not stated, most of the immigrant perpetrators are Muslims. In one of the rare instances where the Swedish media actually revealed the truth, the newspaper Aftonbladet reported several years ago that 9 out of 10 of the most criminal ethnic groups in Sweden came from Muslim countries. This must be borne in mind whilst reading the following newspaper article:

Immigrants are “waging war” against Swedes through robbery

The wave of robberies the city of Malmö has witnessed during this past year is part of a “war against the Swedes.” This is the explanation given by young robbers from immigrant backgrounds when questioned about why they only rob native Swedes, in interviews with Petra Åkesson for her thesis in sociology. “I read a report about young robbers in Stockholm and Malmö and wanted to know why they rob other youths. It usually does not involve a lot of money,” she says. She interviewed boys between 15 and 17 years old, both individually and in groups.

Almost 90% of all robberies reported to the police were committed by gangs, not individuals. “When we are in the city and robbing we are waging a war, waging a war against the Swedes.” This argument was repeated several times. “Power for me means that the Swedes shall look at me, lie down on the ground and kiss my feet.” The boys explain, laughingly, that “there is a thrilling sensation in your body when you’re robbing, you feel satisfied and happy, it feels as if you’ve succeeded, it simply feels good.” “It’s so easy to rob Swedes, so easy.” “We rob every single day, as often as we want to, whenever we want to.” The immigrant youth regard the Swedes as stupid and cowardly: “The Swedes don’t do anything, they just give us the stuff. They’re so wimpy.” The young robbers do not plan their crimes: “No, we just see some Swedes that look rich or have nice mobile phones and then we rob them.”

Why do they hate the Swedes so much? “Well, they hate us,” Petra Åkesson reports them as answering. “When a Swede goes shopping, the lady behind the counter gives him the money back into his hand, looks into his eyes and laughs. When we go shopping, she puts the money on the counter and looks the other way.” Åkesson, who is adopted from Sri Lanka and hence does not look like a native Swede, says it was not difficult to get the boys to talk about their crimes. Rather they were bragging about who had committed the most robberies. Malin Åkerström,a professor in sociology, sees only one solution to the problem: “Jobs for everybody. If this entails a deregulation of the labor market to create more jobs, then we should do so". {...}
