I'm envisioning a biblical plague of lice and fire, called down by God to punish the Jewish sinners. Sounds kind of awesome, like a big miracle. Fuck math, it was the will of God! Repent!

Remember, they had been through "the holocaust of WWI" which was a reference to the young soldiers killed in battle.

The modern meaning of "Holocaust" wouldn't get into dictionaries until several decades after the war. But the meaning of "holocaust" for massacre or something like that was already known long, long before WWII.
The ancient burnt offering meaning would be known to educated Christians and they could figure out the poetic use of the word when they came across it. |
