I'm not keen on Vi$ta. It's not so bad once you ditch the bloatware but it still hogs your memory. I have XP on my desktop and much prefer that but can't be bothered to go and fire it up. I have used Linux (the Ubuntu one) once for about three weeks and just could not get on with it. It crashed too much and was buggy. I've since heard that was probably because I was using Ubuntu, but I don't know. If you only have one machine but plenty of hard drive space, you could partition your hard drive and put Linux on the partition.

I loves me some good target practice but this one is like the Whack-a-Frog game in arcades. No matter how hard you smack it (with common sense, truth and pointing out its errors) the little turd pops straight back up again.

Yeah Ubuntu is pretty buggy. The guys over at Freespire spent nearly a full year removing all the bugs and stuff from the system, was quite a mission through the developing and testing stages of the program, but they know what they are doing. So I will recommend Freespire above Ubuntu everytime.

If you are part of the Freespire community and participate in their forums during development, you can actually contribute to the system and make additions to it you really want. If it is within the framework of the Linux system that is.

Freespire is just as "easy" as Ubuntu but far more stable. Last I heard they were dumping the whole "Based on Ubuntu" because of the buggy nature of Ubuntu for a more stable platform to cut down on development time.

I'll give it a go when I get round to firing the desktop back up again - thanks for the recommendation. I do want to use Linux because I've heard so many good things about it, but I have to keep a copy of Windows on at least one machine for certain programs.
