French riot police officers have been scolded for brutally arresting two women, after backing away when confronted by a big group of protesters against the so-called coronavirus health passes, who stormed a mall in central Paris.

Hundreds of people forced their way into the Forum des Halles shopping center on Saturday, amid a nationwide string of demonstrations against the Covid-19 restrictions and mandates. The group was seen chanting ‘Freedom!’ inside the mall, which is partially underground and connected to the metro transit hub of Chatelet–Les Halles.

‘No regret’: Frenchman who did jail time for slapping President Macron says he received ‘hundreds’ letters of support

A man who spent several months behind bars for slapping French President Emmanuel Macron this summer has said he has received many letters in support of his “political” action.

Damien Tarel told BFM TV he feels “no regret” over attacking the head of the French state. “I deplore physical violence. Nevertheless, it was just a tiny slap. I believe Macron has recovered extremely well,” he said, adding that he plans to attend protests against Covid-19 health passes in the near future.

The 28-year-old was released on Saturday after serving a prison sentence for slapping Macron in early June. He hit the president as he was greeting a crowd of spectators during a trip to southern France.

France suspends 3,000 health staff as Europe targets vaccine refusal

PARIS, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Hospitals, care homes and health centres have suspended around 3,000 workers across France for failing to comply with mandatory COVID vaccination, the government said on Thursday, as countries around Europe weigh how far to go to combat the pandemic.

While Italy is set to announce later on Thursday that proof of vaccination or a negative test will be compulsory for all workers, going further than any other country in the region, the Netherlands plans a similar step - but only to go to bars or clubs.

Britain, meanwhile, says it is highly likely to require front-line health and social care workers in England to be vaccinated as part of a plan to contain the virus during winter.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron's decision in mid-July to require a similar health pass to go anywhere from restaurants to gyms and museums, and make the jab mandatory for health workers, has massively increased vaccination take-up.

Five men ganged up on the victim after calling him a “dirty Jew,” the Actu 17 news site reported. The Jewish man, who was wearing a kippah while walking down the street, suffered minor injuries.

A court in southern France has slapped a billboard owner with a €10,000 fine for "public insult" after President Emmanuel Macron was depicted on the man's public advertising panel as Hitler during anti-Covid-rules demonstrations.

On Friday, a court in Toulon slapped Michel-Ange Flori with the hefty penalty of €10,000 ($11,755) for having represented the French president as Hitler on a billboard.

A prosecutor argued in court that Flori's images had shown an "obvious desire to do harm."

Flori has declared his decision to appeal, slamming the ruling as having buried "the right to caricature."

The personal vaccine passport QR code of French President Emmanuel Macron has been leaked on social media, raising questions over the system’s ability to protect the health privacy of citizens.

On Tuesday, the QR code linked to the ‘pass sanitaire’ of Mr Macron was leaked on social media networks, including Snapchat and Twitter.

The government at the Élysée confirmed to BMF TV that the pass, which correctly displayed his name and date of birth, was indeed the personal QR code for the French leader. Prior to it being disabled, the QR code also contained information on when Macron was vaccinated and with which brand of vaccine.

“This system works, but there has been an ethical flaw on the part of one or more health professionals. Someone made an impression of the QR code and circulated it voluntarily or by negligence,” the government said.

A young man threw what looked like a hard-boiled egg at French President Emmanuel Macron at a business expo on Monday. The assailant was detained.

Macron was attending an expo of catering, hotel, and food businesses in the southern city of Lyon on Monday morning. He shook hands and greeted people inside a pavilion, surrounded by reporters and his security detail.

In an incident caught on film by local news website Lyon Mag, an attendee threw a small round object at the president. The projectile bounced off his left shoulder. Macron, who was wearing a mask, looked with surprise in the direction of the thrower before being quickly shielded by bodyguards. One of the guards blocked the president’s face with his hand.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to a year in prison for illegally funding his unsuccessful 2012 re-election campaign.

The 66-year-old was found guilty in a Paris court of spending tens of millions of euros more on his campaign than was permitted under the law.

He will not be jailed, however, and can serve his sentence at home with an electronic bracelet, the court ruled.

Mr Sarkozy, who denies any wrongdoing, described the ruling as an "injustice".

He said he would go "right to the end" to seek "truth and justice". His lawyer added that he would appeal the verdict.

This is Mr Sarkozy's second one-year prison term. In March, he became the first former president of France to receive a custodial sentence - for corruption and influence peddling - but remains free pending an appeal of that sentence.

A French teen has reportedly been arrested and fined for attempting to enter a hospital using the health pass data of President Emmanuel Macron, which had been leaked online. He said he impersonated the president “just for fun.”

Upon being asked by the French television channels TF1 and LCI on Wednesday whether vaccination against Covid-19 would become mandatory in the future, Macron replied, “This hypothesis exists,” before noting that France was not far off from being fully vaccinated anyway.

The French president did encourage the “little more than 5 million of our fellow citizens who are not vaccinated” to “take responsibility” and get their jabs. He argued that the unvaccinated “are not protected” from the virus, noting that they are behind a recdent surge in hospitalizations.

The flag of the European Union was removed from the Arc de Triomphe after protests from conservative politicians



Conservative rivals of French President Emmanuel Macron said the EU flag underneath the Arc de Triomphe in Paris was an attack on “French identity,” and was taken down soon after the wave of outrage.

President Emmanuel Macron’s office told French media that the blue flag with 12 golden stars was removed on Sunday “in accordance with the planned schedule.”

Secretary of State for European Affairs Clement Beaune also denied that the removal was related to the backlash from conservatives. “I’m proud that this symbol was displayed under the Arc de Triomphe,” he said.

In a shock move in the late hours of Monday evening, the French National Assembly rejected a push from the government to transform the nation’s COVID pass into a fully-fledged vaccine passport.

Rebuking Emmanuel Macron’s government, a majority in the National Assembly refused to examine a change to the law to allow the government to introduce a vaccine passport by January 15th.

The government had hoped to transform the COVID pass (Pass Sanitaire) — which has been available to those with proof of a negative test, proof of recovery from the Wuhan virus, or vaccination — into a full vaccine passport only granted to those with proof of full vaccination or recovery.

The proposed legislation would also introduce harsher penalties for forging vaccine passports — which has become increasingly widespread as of late — with those caught facing up to five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (£63,00/$85,000), France 24 reports.
