Bjørn Leo Benkow (born February 13, 1940) is a Norwegian journalist that became infamous for his notoriously fakings of interviews with celebrities. Among the persons Benkow claimed to have interviewed are Bill Gates, Michael Schumacher, Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Thatcher, all of them denying that the interviews took place.[1] Benkow claimed that he inteviewed Michael Schumacher in his home in Switzlerland and Bill Gates on a plane to Munich, among other things. In reality, he fabricated the interviews in his own home. He sold his fabricated interviews to several Scandinavian newspapers.

There was suspicion he had fabricated an interview with Margaret Thatcher already in 1992, Thatcher denying that an alleged interview took place. In the summer of 2006, it was revealed that Benkow had fabricated several interviews. After spokespersons of severeal of the celebrities had denied that such interviews took place, Benkow admitted to having fabricated the interviews.

His uncle is the politician Jo Benkow[2]. His grandfathers original name was Chaim Eliah Benkowitz, but he changed the name to Benkow after settling in Norway around 1900 due to anti-semitism in his native Russia.

Politicians deny hostility

The latest debate sparked by remarks about the royal family from Israel's ambassador to Norway has provoked another after Norway was then accused of being one of the most Israel-hostile countries in the world.Israel's ambassador to Norway Miryam Shomrat apologized after saying she had hoped for more visible support from Norway's royal family after recent incidents directed against the synagogue in Oslo, a statement that provoked a sharp reaction from Norway's Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. She blamed the media for misrepresenting her, but Norway's Jewish community also reacted strongly to what they felt were inappropriate remarks about the royals.

The anti-Israel label was first reported after an unnamed Israeli official was quoted in Israel's largest newspaper Yedioth Aharonot saying that the poor treatment of the Israeli ambassador in Oslo in general was unique, and this was followed by reports and claims of anti-Israel and anti-Semitism tendencies from Norway from a variety of sources.

Raanan Gissin, adviser for former prime minister Ariel Sharon told TV 2 that Norway stood out as one of the most Israel-hostile countries in Europe, and claimed there were terrorist organizations on Norwegian soil working for the genocide of Israeli citizens.

Jo Benkow, a former president of the Storting, Norway's parliament, and arguably the most prominent Jewish figure in Norway, added his voice to critics, saying that Norway's media was the most Israeli-hostile in the Western world.

Leading Norwegian politicians were quick to voice their replies.

"Sympathy for the Jewish people and Israel is still very great in Norway, and still among the strongest in Europe. At the same time I think we have become among the most critical to Israel's current policy," said Thorbjørn Jagland, president of Storting and former Labor Prime Minister, and argues that this is in no way a contradiction in terms.

"Because Norwegians have had so close a relationship to Israel they are all the more disconsolate over the policies toward the Palestinians. Through the Oslo (peace) process Norway's population has also developed a close and near relationship to the Palestinians and their cause," Jagland said.

Former Conservative Foreign Minister Jan Petersen believes that Israel has been too touchy in its reactions to Norway in recent days and that there is now a strong need to calm things down.
"Israel must be able to take criticism without interpreting everything as fundamental criticism. But we have a job to do in terms of strengthening the bilateral relationship between Norway and Israel, also in areas such as research, culture and business. If we are to play a role in the Middle East we are dependent upon broad contact and respect in both camps," Petersen said.

Former Christian Democrat Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik could not agree with claims that Norway is hostile to Israel and that Norwegian media is overly biased.

"One must differentiate between our fundamental solidarity with the state of Israel and that one can criticize individual acts carried out by the Israeli government. Even a friend of Israel such as myself must be allowed to criticize. Also one must differentiate between Norwegian authorities and what is expressed in the media. If someone in Israel believes that the Norwegian media is negative, it does not mean that Norway is hostile," Bondevik said.

Benkow disagrees
"Even relatively moderate Israeli politicians believe that Norwegian media are the most Israel-critical in the Western world and I do too," Benkow said. He does not believe that the Norwegian public is particularly hostile to Israel but that many do build on the impression they get from the media.

"My overall impression is that the media has been more concerned with criticizing Israel, the only free nation in the region, than with criticizing the other side," Benkow said, and has in mind various calls to boycott and the attention given to Jostein Gaarder and former party colleague and Conservative ex-prime minister, Kåre Willoch.

Benkow sees this pair as representing an unusually unilateral critical attitude to Israel. Benkow had no quarrel with various Norwegian governments that had "by and large" behaved correctly towards Israel.

Odd-Bjørn Fure, director of the Center for Holocaust Studies does not feel there is a basis for claiming Norwegian opinion has become more Israel-critical than other European nations, but he does see a slow process that has transformed formerly strongly pro-Israel feelings to one that criticizes aspects of Israel's policies.

"The shocking incidents of physical attacks on the synagogue have triggered a wave of solidarity with the Jewish minority, a wide and strong wave that has made an impression, We still don't know if there is a connection with these anti-Semitic acts and a wider spectrum of anti-Semitic attitudes. This is a question that must be posed openly," Fure said.

Israeli ambassador sets off storm of criticism

The Jewish community in Oslo was leading a chorus of critics against Israel's ambassador to Norway on Tuesday, after the Jewish state's top local envoy had dished out criticism of her own against Norway's royal family and government. Ambassador Miryam Shomrat has now apologized, sort of."First I was furious, now I'm just sad because the damage is done," said Anne Sender, spokesman for Oslo's synagogue and The Mosaic Religious Community in Norway (Det Mosaiske Trossamfund, DMT). "It's most unfortunate that the ambassador has done what she's done."

Sender told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) Tuesday morning that she had spoken with Shomrat and that the ambassador "now sees that she crossed the line, and I'm very glad about that," Sender said, repeating earlier statements that Shomrat had no right to level criticism against Norwegian officials on behalf of Norwegian Jews.

Shomrat angered her own fellow Jews, along with Norwegian officials, when she told national media outlets late Monday that the royal family, led by King Harald, and Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg should have expressed more solidarity with the Jewish community following a recent shooting at the Oslo synagogue.

Shomrat claimed that the royal family is hailed in the Oslo synagogue every Saturday, adding that it shouldn't be "a one-way" affair. She also claimed that Jews in Norway felt "alone," lacked sufficient sympathy from the royals and the government, and suggested that the lack of "a stronger reaction" from the royal family and the government could give rise to anti-Semitism in Norway.

Nonsense, claimed Sender, who ironically had just written her own expression of gratitude for support shown after the synagogue shooting. "If we had wanted to make such criticism, we would have done so ourselves, but we would never have dreamed of coming with the kind of attack on the royal family that she (Shomrat) has made here," said Sender, referring to Shomrat's remarks broadcast nationwide on the Monday night NRK TV news.

In a press release issued later in the day, Shomrat claimed it wasn't her intention to criticize the royal family, and she blamed the press for interpreting her remarks as such. "I deeply regret if this was the impression created in the media," she wrote.

Sender maintained that the ambassador's remarks were simply unwarranted, because a string of government officials including Stoltenberg himself had repeatedly expressed deep concern after the synagogue shooting. Norway's justice minister made a special trip to the synagogue on behalf of the government, as did the Bishop of Oslo and Oslo's leading imam, to show solidarity from the local Christian and Muslim communities.

'Inappropriate'
It's highly unusual for an ambassador in Norway to direct criticism against Norway's royal family, whose role is to remain above politics. Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre had called the Israeli ambassador's remarks "inappropriate" on national radio Tuesday morning, and Stoltenberg strongly denied her suggestion that Norwegian officials hadn't made a large enough show of sympathy and support.

So did the president of the Norwegian Parliament, Thorbjørn Jagland, who's long been actively involved in efforts to win peace in the Middle East.

"I would say that our solidarity has been made clear to the Jewish community in Norway to the highest degree," Jagland told newspaper Aftenposten. "Regarding the criticism against the royal family, I must say that I don't find that fair either, especially since it's highly unusual for the royal house to ever make any declarations following specific events."

Officials at the Royal Palace in Oslo, which is just across the street from the heavily guarded Israeli Embassy, had declined comment on the ambassador's claims.

Ambassador regrets offense

Israel's ambassador Miryam Shomrat has issued a press release saying she never meant to criticize Norway's royal family and claims she has been misrepresented by media.In a letter to Norway's Foreign Ministry (UD) the Israeli ambassador said that she did not intend any criticism of the royal family and deeply regretted if her remarks had been interpreted in this way.

Shomrat expressed her highest respect for the royal family and asked that her apology be relayed to them.

"It is with great dismay that I have understood that certain of my answers regarding the shooting upon the synagogue on Sunday a week ago have been presented as criticism of His Majesty the King," Shomrat said in a press release, and insisted that there was never any intention of criticism of any member of the royal family. "I deeply regret that this was the impression created by the media," she said.

Foreign Ministry communication adviser Anders Rikter told Aftenposten that this was the end of the matter as far as the UD was concerned. The palace had no comment other than to confirm that they had been informed of the letter's contents via the UD.

Shomrat said in interviews with Aftenposten and NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting) in connection with the shooting upon the synagogue that she missed a sign of support and solidarity from the royal family, and said that prayers were said for them every Saturday and that there should not be a one-way relationship.

Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre reacted sharply to the remarks and called them "unsuitable", saying Shomrat had gone too far and should have been aware that the royal family can never reply to such remarks.

Anne Sender, religious leader for The Mosaic Religious Community, also received an apology from the ambassador.

"We had a long conversation. She had understood that she had gone too far and she offered an apology," Sender said.

Sender said that she was both upset by the criticism of the royal family and by the impression the ambassador gave of speaking on behalf of Norway's Jews, and said many Norwegian Jews had reacted to the statement.

"She is a guest in this country. She is not our ambassador," Sender said, and emphasized that it was important to differentiate between being Norwegian and Israeli. Sender hoped that the matter had not hurt Jews in Norway and that the affair could now be played down.

Norway - a paradigm for anti-Semitism

'I would like to take the opportunity to remember all the billions of fleas and lice that lost their lives in German gas chambers, without having done anything wrong other than settling on persons of Jewish background."

This is what Norwegian comedian Otto Jespersen said on Thursday 27 November on the country's largest commercial TV station. Much worse, however, is that the director of the station defended this expression of "satire."

A week later Jespersen, in his weekly TV appearance, gave a "satiric" monologue of mixed anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli remarks. He concluded by wishing the Jews a happy Christmas. But then as an afterthought, he said this was not proper as the Jews had murdered Jesus. Two years ago the same comedian burned pages from the Tanach in front of a TV camera, but this was no reason to terminate his employment. Jespersen explained that he wouldn't burn the Koran if he wanted to live longer than a week.

LAST WEEK, on four consecutive days, there were anti-Israeli articles in Norway's second-largest daily Aftenposten. The first called for a general boycott of Israel. The second promoted an academic boycott, falsely accusing Israeli physicians of participating in torture and the Israeli Medical Association of remaining silent about it. Any honest debater would have reported that Israeli hospitals routinely treat Palestinian children, some of whom express joy when suicide bombers kill Israelis. One wonders whether any other country would allow this.

The third article stressed the right to criticize Israel. This is a typical attack on a "straw man," as nobody denies this right. The fourth claimed that Israel is not a democracy. Only thereafter a pro-Israeli voice was heard.

Two years ago the conservative Aftenposten got international attention when it published an op-ed by Jostein Gaarder which until this day remains the vilest anti-Semitic article published in a European mainstream paper since the Second World War.

Whoever wants to understand how Jews might live in a future democratic Europe if no major counter-forces are mobilized should study Norway. Among parts of the elite there, Jew-hatred and rabid anti-Israelism intermingle. The country's population numbers only 4.6 million. The Jewish population, even before the war, was never more than 2,000. It now numbers 1,300, of which only 700 affiliate with the organized community. Yet Norway must figure prominently in any future history of post-war European anti-Semitism.

Norwegian anti-Israelis keep repeating that their anti-Israelism is not anti-Semitism. One only has to check their statements against the European Union's working definition of anti-Semitism to see that this is often untrue. Norway has a long history of anti-Semitism. In 1929 a great majority of its parliament voted to forbid shechita (Jewish ritual slaughter) - several years before Hitler's Germany did so. It is still forbidden, although hunters, including government ministers, can legally kill animals in as cruel a manner as they want. Last year Norway aimed to kill 1,000 whales, but succeeded in finding only 500. If all needs for kosher beef were met by local shechita,it would require at most several tens of cows annually.

During the war, the Norwegians were the ones who rounded up Jews and robbed them before shipping them off to Auschwitz. After the war, emergency help was given to what the Norwegians called the two "hardest-hit groups" - fishermen and residents of the northern part of the country. The Jews, however, were robbed further by the Norwegian democrats. During the restitution process, they had to pay for the administration of those of their assets recovered from the looters. About 10 years ago a senior Norwegian Nazi official proudly told a Jewish visitor that he had no regrets, and still had paintings and furniture taken from Jews.

In the new round of restitution in the mid-1990s, several authorities did their utmost to avoid paying. Berit Reisel, the only Jewish member of the commission of inquiry, states that she was threatened by chairman Oluf Skarpnes, a former Justice Minister. He told her that if she didn't go along with his proposed report, it would cost her dearly as far as her life and health were concerned. Reisel added that a few days later she was attacked on a street in Oslo.

AFTER THE beginning of the second intifada, several Jewish children were harassed in school. The aggression was supported by teachers on several occasions. Since then, the Jewish community has kept a low profile. When asked by the press, its leaders will admit there is anti-Semitism, but claim that critics overstate it. They usually remain silent on the anti-Semitic aspects of anti-Israelism.

Norwegian hate cartoons often mix anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism. Some are straight-out anti-Semitic, such as one which appeared in the Labor movement daily Dagsavisen in 2003. It portrayed a Jew with a long beard reading the new Ten Commandments, including "murder, kill, liquidate, execute." During the Second Lebanon War, anti-Semitic incidents in Oslo were the most severe in Europe. The synagogue was shot at, the cantor was attacked on a main street and the Jewish cemetery was desecrated. The Jewish community's president Anne Sender was thereafter quoted in a European Jewish Congress report speaking of the considerable "atmosphere of intimidation and fear."

Anti-Israelism has been built up systematically in Norway by trade unions, media, some prominent Christians and politicians. The demonization is classic: major media report negative things about Israel while obfuscating or omitting Palestinian suicide attacks or declared genocidal intentions. The main counterforce is a small group of Christian friends.

NGO Monitor has analyzed how significant governmental development aid reaches NGOs engaged in political campaigning against Israel and in support of extreme Palestinian demands. The good the Norwegian government does, including subsidizing the rebuilding of synagogues in Poland, cannot be offset against the infrastructure of hatred it supports.

Norway offers aid for Auschwitz upkeep

STOCKHOLM (AFP)---Norway said this week it would donate two million kroner (221,000 euros, 312,000 dollars) to the upkeep of the memorial museum at the Nazi German Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland.

"Auschwitz-Birkenau is perhaps the most important museum in Europe. This site tells a story that we are not allowed to forget," Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said in a statement.

"It is up to all of us to help ensure that this memorial over the extermination of Jews in Europe does not fall into disrepair, so that future generations can also learn about the darkest chapter in European history and thereby help make sure that it never happens again," he said.

Poland has proposed the creation of an international fund of 120 million euros for the maintenance of the camp, where some 1.1 million people were killed, including a million Jews from different countries, from 1940 to 1945.

Norwegian Black Metal Band Causes Stir With Anti-Islamic Lyrics

According to the Arab television network Al Arabiya, Norwegian black metallers TAAKE have sparked outrage after being nominated for a prestigious Norwegian music award despite having written lyrics that are allegedly anti-Islamic.

TAAKE's "Noregs Vaapen" album, along with the latest releases from INSENSE, SHINING, VREID and ÅRABROT, has been nominated in the "Metal" category at the 40th annual Spellemann awards (the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy Awards). The largest and oldest Norwegian music awards show will be held Saturday, January 14 at Folketeateret in Oslo, Norway and will be broadcast live on the Norwegian channel NRK1.

TAAKE's critics argue that the lyrics in the band's song "Orkan" (Hurricane) are xenophobic as they include the phrase "To hell with Muhammad and the Mohammedans" and their "unforgivable customs."

However, Hoest, TAAKE's front man, has refuted these claims and said that their sole intention was to criticize religion. "Our view, in the name of freedom of expression, is that it is shameful to adhere to Christianity or Islam," he said.

Marte Thorsby, chairman of the prize committee's board, denied any allegations that the judges had not properly listened to the album before its nomination. "We enjoy full freedom of expression in Norway and a Spellemann jury is not going to censor content in any way," she told the Aftenposten newspaper.

Hoest previously found himself at the center of controversy in March 2007 after he appeared on stage in Essen, Germany with a swastika symbol drawn on his chest. This led to the cancellation of the band’s European tour and outrage among many heavy metal fans across Germany.

Hoest responded to the controversy by saying, "We truly apologize to all of our collaborators who might get [into] problems because of the Essen swastika scandal, except for the Untermensch (subhuman) owner of that club; you can go suck a Muslim."

TAAKE's most recent statement takes a slightly less offensive tone: "TAAKE has never been a political band, and we do not encourage either violence or racism."

Three people, two of them originating from the former Yugoslavia, were arrested in Norway for alleged links with Al Qaeda, announced today the Norwegian security service.


All three men arrested, aged 24, 27 and 29 years, have Norwegian citizenship, and the oldest of them was born in Somalia, led the police security service (PST).

The two suspects were fighting on the side of the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which is active in Syria and that Norway considers a terrorist organization, conveyed the AP.

Three people have been arrested "in order to be precluded from teaching to support or participate in the activities of" terrorist groups.

Bosnian Muslim found innocent of torturing Serbs

The Norwegian Supreme Court on Friday acquitted a Bosnian-born man of war crime charges because the country’s constitution prohibits applying a law retroactively in such cases.

Mirsad Repak was sentenced in 2008 by the Oslo District Court to five years in prison for abusing Bosnian Serb prisoners in Bosnia’s Dretelj detention camp in 1992, when he was a member of a paramilitary force.

He spent four months in custody, but appealed and was released two years ago while awaiting a final decision from the high court.

The case sets a precedent in Norway, which has not held a war crimes trial since Nazi collaborator Vidkun Quisling and other Norwegians were tried in the aftermath of World War II.

Repak was sentenced based on a Norwegian war crime law provision adopted in 2008 that covers crimes against humanity, genocide and terrorism, and allowed it to be applied retroactively.

The Supreme Court on Friday said this provision violates the country’s constitution.

The move effectively quashed Repak’s sentence and ordered he remain free. It also repeated a 2008 acquittal of crimes against humanity.

Repak’s lawyer, John Christian Elden, said although he cannot be tried for war crimes he still could face a charge of deprivation of liberty.

Law professor Jo Stigen described the court’s decision as a “setback.”

“This means Norway cannot take responsibility with responding to punishing war criminals from the Balkans,” said Stigen, assistant professor in public and international law at the University of Oslo. “It means Norway will have to focus on newer war crimes.”

Repak, 44, was granted asylum when he moved to Norway in 1993, becoming a Norwegian citizen in 2001. He was arrested in May 2007 on suspicion of committing war crimes.

Nemat Ali Shah was seriously wounded rushed to hospital after being attacked from behind by an unidentified person, rtl website reported.

The incident took place outside his house when he was walking to the mosque.

Hospital sources said Ali Shah is recuperating after a surgery.

A police investigation is going on to find the perpetrator. A police spokesperson said it is too early to talk about the motivation behind the violent assault.

The Pakistani-born Imam had been the target of an attack inside the mosque last year, too.

About two percent of the 5 million residents in Norway are Muslims.

Artists in Norway Built a Re-Creation of a Human Zoo That Held Black People in Captivity

–An art project in Norway has sprung up to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the signing of Norway's constitution. I'm not an art expert by any means. My interest in art starts at velvet paintings and ends with dogs playing poker, but this particular project piqued my interest because it's a recreation of a very real, very racist tourist attraction from the 1914 World's Fair in Oslo called Kongoslandsbyen (or "Congo Village"), which claimed to be a recreation of an African village—complete with black men, women, and children engaged in crude recreations of tribal customs. Global Post reported that a newspaper of the time quoted visitors as remarking that the exhibit was "exceedingly funny," and that it was" wonderful that we are white."

This is not the first time Europeans have sought to shed light on this disturbing artifact of popular culture. In 2011, the Quai Branly museum in Paris hosted in exhibition of material from human zoos in France, England, and Germany. It was common to bring back "specimens" from Africa to parade around for the enjoyment of well-heeled, curious white patrons. A BBC article on the exhibit mentioned a particularly famous South African named Saartjie Baartman who suffered from steatopygia, a condition they refer to as causing an "extremely protuberant buttocks and elongated labia." That sounds like your run-of-the-mill freak show, except with the added element of her race being a major part of the attraction.



Clearly, the fascination with black female asses was around long before the invention of the hip-hop music video. The Paris World's Fair in 1889 had a "Negro Village" attraction that offered 400 Africans to be gawked at by fairgoers, and occasionally those people were displayed in cages—sometimes nude or semi-nude. Granted, nudity isn't illicit in many African tribes, then or now. Yet, for the attendees, surely there was an element of the prurient at play, in the same way that people at modern zoos eagerly gawk at monkeys fucking each other and flinging their shit.

The concept of capturing and parading Africans around in cages fell out of favor, along with the telegraph, boiling drinking water, and the League of Nations, but the legacy of dehumanization of "the other" persists in the global culture. It seems like not a week goes by that a European soccer match isn't tainted by a fan throwing bananas at a black player. A common insult hurled at Barack Obama is comparing him to a chimp. One of the reasons that so many black people found Miley Cyrus's VMAs performance offensive is that they saw Miley parading taut black flesh around the stage for the implicit purpose of showing them off as objects or curiosities. That perception is very, very likely to be off-base and unfair, but it exists for a good reason. Historically, black people have been used as exotic objects or tools for labor since white men first found the African continent. Many blacks have that oppression in their DNA and need a trigger warning just to watch TV.

The Global Post story on the Congo Village re-creation reported that there are some African intellectuals who took offense at the project. Bwesigye bwa Mwesigire, a Ugandan writer said in the Guardian that the creators of the art project "can’t exonerate themselves because they mean well. Indeed, if they are serious about creating discussions of racism they ought to think deeper about the likelihood that their project may entrench the same prejudices they claim to fight.”

It's fine to be distressed at the lack of action on the part of many in the creative class toward the problems of racial animosity, but I would hazard a guess that there's not a ton of awareness that these places even exist. It's human nature to sweep embarrassing shit under the rug and ignore the fact that it even happened. If I had sex with a stripper in Guatemala and contracted syphilis, I'm not going to tell my OKCupid date all about it, but she might be better off knowing so she can hail a cab home and delete my phone number. These events are not fun to talk about, but the only way to repair the damage is to remember they happened. NOT RACIST for the art project, RACIST for the mere idea of a human zoo.

Three-Quarters of Norwegians Against Joining EU

Almost three-quarters of the Norwegians don’t want to join the EU, shows a poll conducted by Sentio for the newspapers Nationen and Klassekampen, quoted by the Norwegian edition of The Local.

The survey showed that only 16.8% of the respondents said they wanted Norway to join the EU, while 9.2% replied with “I don’t know”.

The remaining 74% said they were against Norway joining the EU.

According to The Local, this is a historical high. For comparison, in a referendum on the matter, conducted 20 years ago, 52.2% of the citizens voted against the EU membership. In the 1972 vote on joining what was then the EEC, opponents won with 53.5% of the vote.

The last time there was a majority supporting EU membership, was in a 2005 EU membership public opinion poll.

Two thirds of Norwegians would react negatively if one of their children married a Muslim, according to the latest annual survey by Norway’s Directorate of Integration and Diversity (IMDI)

The organisation’s annual barometer, released on Wednesday, reported that 58 percent of Norwegians surveyed said they would be unhappy about gaining a Muslim son-in-law or daughter-in-law.

This compared to 32 percent for a Hindu one, 27 percent for Buddhist, 24 percent for a someone of Jewish faith, and just six percent for a Christian.

“There are some pretty scary numbers here. Especially the high levels of skepticism towards Muslims,” Linda Alzaghari, general manager of Minotenk, a think.tank looking at minority groups, told Aftenposten.

Perhaps surprisingly, immigrants in Norway from Muslim countries were less worried about their own children marrying non-Muslims, than the other way around.

Just 15 percent of Norwegians with an Iraqi background, 19 percent of those with a Somali background, and 39 percent of those with a Pakistani background, said they would be worried about one of their children marring a Christian.

The survey found that as many as 60 percent of Norwegians with an immigrant background felt that they faced discrimination in the country, with the percentage rising to close to 75 percent for Somali immigrants.

“There are huge numbers, and we set the frame very wide. This includes those who have lived here a long time. I'm very concerned about it,” Sunniva Ørstavik, Norway’s Anti-discrimination ombudsman, told the newspaper. "Many believe that this is a question about bad people, but it isn’t. Most of the discrimination takes place because it is you and I who are doing it.”
