94-year-old Nazi guard Friedrich Karl Berger faces extradition
94-year-old Nazi guard Friedrich Karl Berger faces extradition
Sep 23, 2020 A former concentration camp guard who has lived in America since 1959, partly financed by a pension linked to his wartime service, is facing extradition to Germany for what would be one of the last Nazi war crime trials. State prosecutors in the northern German town of Celle are investigating Friedrich Karl Berger on suspicion of abetting the murder of 70 prisoners at a satellite camp of the Neuengamme network near Hamburg in 1945. A US Justice Department official said in March that Mr Berger, 94, was part of an “SS machinery of oppression that kept concentration camp prisoners in atrocious conditions of confinement”. US officials allege that he served at a camp near Meppen in northern Germany where Jews, Poles, Russians, Danes, Dutch, Latvians, French, Italians and political opponents of the Nazis were imprisoned. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/wor...9b37d7cefc8f7d |

Deportation of Nazi camp guard Friedrich Karl Berger upheld by Justice Dept.
Nov 19, 2020 The Board of Immigration Appeals dismissed an appeal on Thursday by Friedrich Karl Berger, a former Nazi camp guard living in Tennessee who was ordered to be deported from the United States, according to an announcement from the Department of Justice. After a two-day trial last February, a judge ruled that Berger be removed to Germany. The appeal was handled by Eli Rosenbaum, the legendary Nazi hunter who serves in the Justice Department’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section. Rosenbaum also helped try the case in court. https://jewishinsider.com/2020/11/de...eli-rosenbaum/ |

German prosecutors shelve case against ex-Nazi guard
Dec 10, 2020 BERLIN — German prosecutors say they are shelving their investigation into a former Nazi concentration camp guard living in the United States for lack of evidence. Friedrich Karl Berger, 95, still faces possible deportation from the U.S. after being ordered expelled by a Memphis, Tennessee court in February. Berger has admitted serving as a guard at camp in northwestern Germany for a few weeks near the end of the war but has said he did not observe any abuse or killings. Prosecutors in the city of Celle said Thursday they had been unable to refute the suspect’s account and had decided to shelve the case against him. https://ktiv.com/2020/12/10/german-p...ex-nazi-guard/ |
