Inventing LA: The Chandlers & their Times

Well-made albeit leftist documentary on PBS. For decades both voice and linchpin of the local conservative business community, the LA Times was pro-capital, anti-union and virulently anti-communist. The Chandler family paper helped fuel rapid population growth by promoting LA to nervous Midwesterners as America’s “white spot.” One LAT editor was early “kingmaker” to Richard Nixon.

Family attitudes began to fragment in the sixties due to the influence of socially insecure Dorothy Chandler. To raise funds for her famous Pavilion, she “bridged” the downtown WASP establishment and the West Side jews, denouncing the club set (her own people) and boasting that some of her best friends were jewish.

Dorothy’s all-American son Otis was even worse. While LAT was profitable, it wasn’t respected for serious journalism, the measuring rod being the NY Times. Otis instituted affirmative action and explored the “root causes” of the Watts riots, attacked the John Birch Society, which included many Chandler family members, and turned on RMN. “You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore” was actually a jibe at LAT. A slew of Pulitzers rewarded the “progressive editorial policy.” LAT’s corporate parent went public and used the proceeds for a vast acquisition spree; the expansion, it’s stated without explanation, wouldn’t have been possible had the paper remained right-wing. PBS neglects to mention that firm’s NY investment bank around that time was Lehman Brothers (and here).

The bickering family eventually gave up control. LAT is now in the dubious hands of jewish real estate vulture investor Sam Zell.

Whenever I buy an L.A. Times out of the machine, I always take mine, and leave the rest on top of the machine. Free bedsheets for the bums, and a small profit loss for the already dying Jew/WASP newspaper industry in L.A.

Yeah, I recall a writer out of our Student Life newsroom got an internship at L.A. Times. I believe he was a Mexican named Martin.
