In 1943, the elite guerilla Chindits unit deployed deep behind enemy lines to fight in Japanese-occupied Burma with a mission to disrupt communications and supply routes fuelling the Japanese war effort.

The Chindits were named after the Chinthe - fierce lion-like creatures that stood guard at every Burmese temple - and the 77th Brigade's cap badge will feature the mythical animal, according to reports.

The British military is setting up a specialist force modelled on the Chindits, the commandos who gained renown through their daring missions behind enemy lines in Burma during the Second World War.

They will specialise in "non-lethal" forms of psychological warfare, using social media including Facebook and Twitter to "fight in the information age".

The Chief of the Army, General Sir Nick Carter, believes that the radical new plan is essential to face the “asymmetric” battlefields of the 21st century, where tactics and strategies differ significantly between enemies, such as with Isis. Key lessons, he says, can be learned from the campaign carried out against the Japanese by Allied troops using unconventional tactics seven decades ago.

The 2,000-strong brigade will have the same number, 77, and the same emblem – of a Chindit, a mythical Burmese beast – as the one under Brigadier Orde Wingate. But, as well as being ready for combat, the troops will be armed with modern skill sets including being adept in social media and new technology.

One of the key reasons behind the successful operations of the Chindits was the support they received from the local population against the Japanese forces. General Carter holds believes the winning of “hearts and minds” has never been more important.

Senior officers hold that a range of current conflicts, from Iraq to Ukraine, have shown how the information war is as vital as the ones fought with weapons. The brigade, which will be formally unveiled in April with headquarters at Hermitage, near Newbury in Berkshire, will be responsible for all “non-lethal deployment” of the UK military abroad.

The troops are supposed to deliver “means of shaping behaviour through the use of dynamic narratives” with teams focusing on psychological operations and interaction with the media. They will also take the lead in providing reconstruction and humanitarian assistance and help with strengthening civic society and local security forces.

The make-up of the brigade also reveals the shrinking size of the Army, with no less than 42 per cent of the recruits coming from the reserves. Increasing numbers of them are replacing regular troops amid cutbacks.

But General Carter insisted the large contingent of part-time soldiers is actually a major advantage. “The brigade consists of more than just traditional capabilities. It is an organisation that sits at the heart of trying to operate ‘smarter’. It comprises a blend of regular troops from all three services as well as reserves and civilians. It will be seeking to draw the very best talent from the regulars and reserve as well as finding new ways of allowing civilians with bespoke skills to serve alongside their military counterparts.”

The British government have unveiled their latest weapon to combat the fierce jihadi group ISIS - a dedicated Twitter feed.

The @UKAgainstISIL account promises 'updates on the UK Government's ongoing work' to defeat the terrorist group.

Since it was activated two days ago, there have been several tweets - including a link to a video arguing that Britain is playing a 'leading role in the global coalition'.

The footage says the UK is taking action such as 'militarily removing territory from Isil' and 'cutting off Isil finances'.

The account has also tweeted the British government's pledge to protect Britons at home, it claims the government is working 'with the internet industry to remove extremist propaganda'

According to the account, 203 British nationals have been arrested for Syria-related terror offences.

UK forces have been carrying out airstrikes against IS - also known as Isil or Daesh - in Iraq, but MPs have not approved involvement in raids on the group's Syrian bases.

Speculation has been growing that David Cameron could stage a vote on extending military involvement when parliament returns from its summer break.

The news comes as ISIS released a new trailer for a forthcoming video.

Produced by al-Hayat media, the ISIS media group behind some of their most high quality releases, the video has been shared widely on social media.

The hashtag for the new release reached 57th on the most popular phrase trending globally on Twitter yesterday.

The short trailer gives a hint of the forthcoming content of the new video. Much of the video appears to be made up of Hollywood-style battle scenes from a Crusader themed film.

One of the other strange features of the trailer is that it appears ISIS may be ready to show off their much talked about gold coin currency.

Although various posters and reported coins have been posted as photographs on social media, the Dinar currency of ISIS has remained a propaganda myth.

The video shows the smelting of gold coins and shows a pile of the alleged currency.

Warfare is a constantly changing landscape, from the weapons that are used to the battlefields they're fought on. Amidst mountains of Snowden leaks from the NSA and GCHQ, it's no longer a mystery that the digital warfare is advancing quickly, and the British Army just upped its digital artillery.

A new group of soldiers, referred to as "Facebook Warriors" will " wage complex and covert information and subversion campaigns," according to the Financial Times. This unit will be named the 77th battalion, whose number also has a historical significance. FT says:

These Facebook warriors will be using similar atypical tactics, through non-violent means, to fight their adversary. This will mainly be achieved through "reflexive control," an old Soviet tactic of spreading specifically curated information in order to get your opponent to react in the exact way you want them to. It's a pretty tricky trick, and the British army will be doing just that with 1,500-person (or more) troop using Twitter and Facebook as a means to spread disinformation, real war truths, and "false flag" incidents as well as just general intelligence gathering. The 77th battalion will reportedly begin operations in April.

We’ve been involved with the Cabinet Office Rapid Response Unit, with our 77th Brigade helping to quash rumours from misinformation, but also to counter disinformation. Between three and four thousand of our people have been involved, with around twenty thousand available the whole time at high readiness.

(for normies) To understand the implications of this statement, we have to go back to 2018, when Carter gave a speech to the Royal United Services Institute.

“In our 77th Brigade,” he said, “… we have got some remarkable talent when it comes to social media, production design, and indeed Arabic poetry. Those sorts of skills we can’t afford to retain in the Regular component but they are the means of us delivering capability in a much more imaginative way than we might have been able to do in the past.”

Previously known as the ‘Security Assistance Group’, 77th Brigade was stood up in 2015 as part of ‘Army 2020’. The Security Assistance Group had been established following the amalgamation of the Media Operations Group, 15 Psychological Operations Group, Security Capacity Building Team, and the Military Stabilisation and Support Group.

What misinformation and disinformation is 77th Brigade helping to quash? How much of the ‘disinformation’ originates from 77th Brigade in the first place?

Part of 77th Brigade’s role is:

Monitoring and evaluating the information environment within boundaries or operational area

They not only ‘counter’ disinformation, but also watch social media, analysing how disinformation, including their own, spreads; mapping the internet and the networks of people sharing content between each other.

And for that, they have thousands deployed, and tens of thousands in reserve, not only in 77th Brigade directly, but right across government and the third sector.
