Formula isn't cheap, but it's not that much. You can get 70 diapers for maybe 5 bucks, 2 formulas (week's worth) for maybe $20. So, it doesn't really cost much day in and day out. But if you let the docs get you on their treadmill, then the costs will skyrocket. I avoid not only tv and religion and consumerism, but holidays, which are too many and too close between. People only do things because other people do them, otherwise it would never occur to them. |

I don't know what age it's safe to start using it at, but my sister had one of these baby food grinders. It doesn't make the veggies into a paste, like "Gerber's", but it grinds them down pretty fine.
Gerber's claims this isn't safe, because raw foods can have bacteria. Their stuff is pasteurized. My sister's kid's never got sick from raw vegetables and fruits, as far as I know. I don't see what the problem would be if you wash the stuff first. Of course everyone has a blender, and can make food into paste if they want. On the other hand, the grinder is small and truly portable since you don't need an outlet. She would just use it at the table and grind whatever she was eating. |

Here most Goodwill employees are retired people or middle-aged women (usually with experience in retail) making some extra money for the family. They work because they want to and generally enjoy their job. People make fun of rural WV people, but once I leave the hills and the climate gets darker things turn into a nightmare.

Sorry Volks but thats just the way nature intended it. I think that I practiced a form of inner eugenics without really realizing it. I married a woman who was above average in height and intelligence, as am I. (well, maybe the height part) Together we produced 2 sons who I refer to as King and Kong. I fully expect both of these boys to wind up as olympic powerlifters and Rhodes scholars. If not, then at least when the chit hits the chan I'll have a ready made team to put in front of my plow. |

Again , I would dispute that . Large babies , oversized , are the product of a diet with too much fat in it . I would reference the Romans and McDougal who has done extensive research in this field . |

Excellent points all, except for the part about it not being difficult. When our first-born was ten months, I thought the same thing. "This is easy", etc. Wait until she's three, and if you have more kids, as we did, be prepared. We had our third child when our first was three and a half and our second was 22 months, which means when our first was 5, our second was 3.5 and our third was 2! Talk about activity! I don't mean to discourage anyone having multiple kids, as even though it's hard work, it's definitely worth it, but the difficulty level multiplies with the number of kids, and especially, the number in diapers/pullups, etc. Once you have three, and the kids outnumber the two of you, it's zone defense, literally. As much as I'd like to have 10 or 12 kids, I don't know how Chester Doles and his wife did it. Also, even though it was harder having the kids relatively close together in age, I think they're closer emotionally to one another because of it. I don't understand why people today have kids 5, 6, or 7 years apart. It makes no sense. You want your kids to grow up together, not as a bunch of separate "only children." |

Gotta disagree with you here to some extent Alex " the child wants attention literally every waking moment. If you let what the child thinks it needs dominate the scene, it will become a monster. You have to give it what it needs, and that's not always what it wants"
On one hand I see your point that you must inforce discipliine, on the other hand we all pick up Dresden any time she wants to be held. Most of the time when she wants down to walk she squirms and lets us know she wants down. With Mark and I and Lynx and Lamb she pretty much has someone paying attention to her every minute she is awake. Plus she has 4 loving grandparents! I found with Lynx and Lamb that the best way to get a kid to be independant is to make them feel secure. Since I was always home with Lynx and Lamb and doing things with them all the time they felt secure and so they were more independant at an early age than my friends kids who had been left at daycare and clung to them like parasites when they got home. My kids know that I am available anytime they need me and so they feel confident and exhibit alot of independence. This doesnt mean spare the rod, it does mean give lots of snuggle time, as much as the kid wants. One of the reasons that I feel preschool is being pushed so much by the establishment is to break the bond between parent and child and especially between mother and child. They even have school for kids as young as 2 years old out here that is run by the local school system. They even pick them up in a school bus!!! Think about it, if that bond is broken early the parent will have less influence on the kids lives and be more open to what the schools and media tell them. I always judged what I did as kid by what my dad would think, not by what was legal, what my friends would think, or by what my teachers would think. He had a huge amount of influence in my life because he was ALWAYS there and he ALWAYS showed an interest in anything I did and he obviously put us kids at the top of his list. That is what I do with my kids, it is tiring but it is worth it when they tell people that you are their best friend and they are teenagers! |

Alex,
Please allow me to slightly edit your post, and i'll deliver 500 copies of it to my ward/congregation next weekend? I'm not one to make a profit from this venture, but to spread your excellent expose/truth, at least in regards to children. Love us, or hate us, at least Mormons have at least 4-8 babies in my ward!.....We need all the encouragement we can get Quote:

I think you summed it up pretty well, April.

And it IS "all about you"! Children, if allowed to be children instead of obedient little adults, are going to bring out the side of yourself you have been trying to hide, your aspect that needs exposure. Nature did this on purpose, that we might evolve. Quote:

babies and small children NEED fat. They need it to develop the myelin sheaths for their neurons or some damn thing. Put a kid on a whole grain vegan diet and I'll bet you'll have a mentally less developed kid. |

"always go to the potty before we get in the car for a trip" and "bedtime at 730 PM every night." That kind of structure for toddlers makes your life much easier, it helps them know what to expect, and it cuts down on showdowns, tantrums, and fights. Is it better to be unpredictably lenient and thus generate the belief that you can be swayed by crying, whining, etc? Also, I am ok with letting 1 year olds learn to sit in their play-yards for a while and play with their toys and books instead of being constantly entertained. You got stuff to do when you're at home, for example cooking or laundry or other chores, and unfortunately life does not always wait for you to finish entertaining your tot's insatiable desire for interaction. If you pick them up every five minutes they will expect it and you will get nothing done if for example you have to watch them all day. You know this is true ladies and I have done my fair share of "daddy duty" etc. |
