Greece sends demarche to Albania

Source: Tanjug

ATHENS -- The Greek government has announced that a demarche had been delivered to the Albanian foreign minister because of attacks against members of the Greek minority.

It was stated that the Greek ambassador in Tirana forwarded the protest note because of the attacks Albanians staged against Greeks in southern Albania after the stadium incident in Belgrade.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Albanian authorities are asked to condemn the incidents that occurred near the border between the two countries.

The Greek ambassador also asked Albania to undertake all necessary measures in order to find, arrest and punish those responsible, as well as to protect the ethnic Greek minority ahead of the upcoming celebration of Greek Independence Day, October 28.

"The ambassador conveyed Greece's enormous concern because of such attacks on peaceful Greek minority, which represents an obstacle to the European perspective of Albania," the statement added.

The ministry in Athens also warns that "attacks of extremists and nationalists certainly weaken the European perspective of the country" and "awaken memories of the past of the Balkans that all countries in the region need to leave behind for the benefit of the common European future."

As the Greek media reported earlier this week around 100 people carrying Albanian flags and banners with nationalist messages arrived in the village of the Dervician in the district of Gjirokaster and demolished stores and cars before they were stopped by the police.

The violence broke out a few hours after the football match in Belgrade was abandoned on Tuesday night because of incidents sparked by a drone flown over the pitch, with a map of Greater Albania attached to it - showing Albania expanded to include parts of Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, and Greece.

There are more Greeks like me
200,000 young people born or raised in Greece are denied Greek citizenship

Author: Damian Mac Con Uladh
New video launched to support campaign calling on the European Union and the Greek government to ensure that Greek citizenship is made available to children born and/or raised in Greece

A new video campaign has been launched by an organisation calling for the state to grant Greek citizenship to an estimated 200,000 children and young adults born and raised in Greece who are denied the status because their parents are immigrants.

Entitled
, the one-minute advertisement features a number of young people explaining why they want to have the same rights as most of their peers. “I belong to this country,” says one, while another says that she already feels “like a citizen of this country”. The video also hears from youths with Greek citizenship calling for their friends to enjoy the same rights as them.

Children born in Greece to parents who are not Greek citizens are not entitled to automatic Greek citizenship, even when they become of age. If their parents are from non-EU countries, then the children face discrimination in a range of areas. For one, they are required to apply for a residence permit to live in the only country they know. As non-EU citizens, they don’t enjoy the same freedom of travel as their Greek peers and they also face discrimination in the labour market. Political rights are also denied to them.

The video was produced by Generation 2.0 for Rights, Equality and Diversity (Generation 2.0 Red). According to its website, it is “a youth organisation that combines research and social action to promote rights, equality and diversity and to combat racism, xenophobia, and discrimination”.

It says that denying citizenship to these children “leads to their social exclusion and stigmatisation as ‘others'”.

On its website, the group is collecting signatures for a petition calling on the European Union and the Greek government to ensure that children born and/or raised in Greece can apply for Greek citizenship.

In 2013, the government last year scrapped a law allowing second-generation migrants to obtain Greek citizenship but has yet to replace it. The 2010 citizenship law, passed by a Pasok government, allowed a child born in Greece to immigrant parents who had been living in the country legally to apply for citizenship. The children had to prove that they had spent at least six years in Greek schools.

Cyprus: Restoration on St Andrew’s Monastery Unites Island

Two sides of the Green Line working together

(ANSAmed) — NICOSIA, NOVEMBER 11 — Restoration works on the Monastery of Saint Andrew were inaugurated in Cyprus on Tuesday, as part of the first-ever collaboration between the communities on both sides of the UN-arbitrated Green Line. The Greek Orthodox Church is located in the northern, Turkish Cypriot-controlled part of the island. The two communities have invested equally in the restoration efforts and the project is a test project that will ideally be extended to other monuments. Years were required to achieve the agreement, made possible by the 2008 creation of a Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage co-chaired by a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot. Turkish Cypriot negotiator Ergun Olgun told ANSA that the project would be used as a test case also for the potentially explosive hydrocarbons issue. For now, the Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage is one of the few successes of the collaboration between the island’s two communities. Over the past few years, in part thanks to EU funds — 4 million thus far with another 4 million allocated — and the role played by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the two communities carried out joint visits throughout the island and drew up a list of over 2,300 cultural heritage sites, naming 26 in the north and 14 in the south requiring intervention. “At the beginning we only selected religious heritage sites,” said Turkish Cypriot member of the committee Ali Tuncay. Work has already been completed on eight churches and mosques requiring urgent restoration — five in the northern part of the island and three in the south. The committee is now proposing interventions on ‘civil’ sites, such as the city’s perimeter walls. “This type of intervention can contribute even more to uniting people,” said Tuncay, noting that “for decades the protection of Cyprus’s cultural heritage was an issue of division, often used for propaganda reasons.” The other positive aspect underscored by Tuncay was that the restoration works are bringing to light works and structures that history had forgotten, such as a fresco discovered in a church of the Kom Kebir village in the northern section of the island and a cistern discovered during works on Othello’s Tower in Famagusta.

Greece: One in Eight Firms Fined for Undeclared Labor

(ANSAmed) — ATHENS, DECEMBER 2 — In the period from September 15 to October 31 the Labor Ministry in Athens imposed fines adding up to 60 million euros on enterprises found to be employing uninsured workers, according to data from the Artemis project released on Monday and reported by daily Kathimerini online. A total of 29,079 companies were monitored, of which one in eight (12.53%), or 3,645, were found to be employing undeclared workers. Of the 157,085 employees checked, 5,751, or 3.66%, had not been declared to social security services.

Inspections intensified in October according to a new model of monitoring undeclared labor conducted by the Labor Inspection Squad and the special agency of the Social Security Foundation (IKA).

Default Greeks funding anti-Hellenism

What does Hanukkah have to do with Anti-Hellenism?

Greeks funding anti-Hellenism?

Hermes writes:

There has recently been a lot of discussion on whether the practice of traditional Islam is inherently incompatible with European, and more specifically, Hellenic values. A legitimate question following the many attacks on freedom of speech, riots and acts of terror in neighbouring countries; and especially, in the context of the recent decision by the Greek government to allow the building of a mosque in Athens.

Another news item released several weeks ago was that Moises Constantinis, president of the Central Jewish Board of Greece, asked why the salaries of rabbis are not paid by the state, like the priests and imams, given that Jewish believers are Greek citizens.

Currently, Orthodox Christianity has a privileged status under the Constitution, so a case could be made for funding its clergy. However, the imams and rabbis must receive plenty of funding from Saudi Arabia and the US/Israel/supranational Jewish organisations. Almost certainly these sources have an ample supply of cash to fend for themselves. So is it appropriate to saddle the already cash-strapped Greek with another tax? Also, is traditional Judaism, like Islam, compatible with Hellenic values?

One of the most important Jewish holidays is the eight-day celebration of Hanukkah (the Festival of Lights). The story of Hanukkah begins in the reign of Alexander the Great when he conquered the Middle East. Due to his kindly rule, and the attractions offered by the Hellenic way of life, many Jews voluntarily assimilated into Hellenism by adopting the language, the customs and the dress. One hundred years later, another Greek ruler, Antiochus IV, controlled the region. The Jewish version of the story is that he began to oppress the Jews by placing a Hellenistic priest in the Temple, prohibiting the practice of the Jewish religion, massacring Jews, and forcing them to sacrifice pigs on the altar of the Temple. Two groups, that opposed Antiochus and his army, united and rose up in what was eventually called the Maccabean Revolt. They won the battle, the Temple was rededicated, and peace reigned.

From then on, Jews have observed the holiday of Hanukah that features all sort of frivolity like lighting candles and playing games of dice in the name of defeating the ‘darkness of Hellenism’. The celebrations also include the virulently anti-Hellenic popular song, Maoz Tzur, usually sung by children. The song is referring to slaughtering the Hellenes, Hellenising Jews and Hellenistic culture in general. Here is an excerpt:

When you have prepared the slaughter
For the blaspheming foe

This is the sort of falsified history that Orthodox Jews are taught, and due to the elevation of their religion amongst the people of the United States, gentile Americans; and more tragically, Greeks, are led to believe this version of events. However, the historically scientific version of events is very different.

The event Hanukkah is based upon is a Jewish civil war. The Hanukkah story is really a revolt against the Hellenized Jews who had become enamoured with the sophisticated Hellenistic culture surrounding them. The rabbis changed the actual story because they wanted to reorientate Judaism following their defeat at the hands of the Romans in 70 AD to make the Jews seem like a martyred people under siege so as to reinvigorate their adherents. The banned Jewish texts, Apocrypha, make it clear the battle against Hellenization was in fact a civil war of Jews against Hellenised Jews. There were no ethnic Greeks involved. So it appears slanderous that orthodox Jews still celebrate victory over the Hellenes - they should be celebrating victory over the traitors within their midst.

However, Hanukkah is not the only evidence of anti-Hellenism in Jewish religious literature. There is a long tradition anti-Hellenism including some of the following: Psalms: 8-9, Isaiah 54:2-3, Isaiah 60:16, Isaiah 49: 22-23. This is only from the Torah. The Talmud is much worse.

Many people would say that this is ancient history and it is not relevant today. This would only be true if the same stereotypes and misinformation did not continue to be spread about Hellenism. Today, Jewish modernizers are denounced as ‘Hellenizers’ in orthodox Jewish circles. The term to be ‘Hellenic’ is derogatory; to be Hellenised, is ‘a darkness’ that must be overcome. An example is Talmudic interpreter, Rabbi Ahron Lopiansky. He has written many enlightening articles, including The ‘Darkness that was Greece’ link. One of his more curious comments is this one:

Greek philosophy was darkness infinitely worse than idolatry.

Um, sorry, but most scholars would say Greek philosophy is the most sublime creation of mankind. Another interesting comment:

The Greeks denied the transcendence of the human spirit and rejected the notion of any metaphysical reality

Wow, most scholars would say the complete opposite. The exaltation of the human spirit and metaphysics is what the Greeks excelled at.

The Greek celebration of humanity, aesthetics, science, art, politics, athletics and reason was in stark contrast to traditional Judaism – which led to animosity towards the Hellenes. The Jewish revolts during the Roman period were not only the cry of a colonised people but also part of a long conflict between Jews and Greeks. There were even large-scale massacres of Greek people in Cyrene 115AD and Cyprus 116AD link. Thereafter, anti-Hellenism was an ever-present feature of Jewish thought and literature. Judaism, especially after the Maccabean Revolt, was largely defined in opposition to Hellenism. In comparison there are hardly any negative references to Hellenism in the Koran. Finally, some orthodox Jews even go as far as to view Western Civilization as the main oppressor of the Jewish people; and therefore, by virtue of providing its foundations, the Greeks as their mortal enemies.

Nevertheless, it is not all that bad. Many secular Greek Jews are great admirers, and even contributors, to Hellenism. And like contemporary Germans they should not be made to bear the burden of the past forever. Also, relations in modern Greece have nearly always been good. Neither should orthodox Jews be denied the right to practice their religion despite the continued slander wrought on the Hellenic people by its historical and contemporary practice.

However, it does appear that some of the core teachings and celebrations of orthodox Judaism are incompatible with Hellenism. Is it wholly appropriate for the Hellenic people to actually fund it?

Greek police arrest fugitive Marxist guerrilla

January 3, 2015

Greek police on Saturday arrested Christodoulos Xiros, a fugitive member of the Marxist guerrilla group November 17 who had absconded while on leave from prison almost a year ago.
Christodoulos Xiros, 56, is serving multiple life terms for his role in Greece’s most lethal guerrilla group, which killed Greek, U.S. and British diplomats before being dismantled in 2002. A police official said he had been arrested in Anavissos, a coastal town outside Athens.
While on the run, Xiros had appeared in a video vowing to avenge the pain ordinary Greeks have suffered under international bailout programmes. A 1 million euro ($1.2 million) reward had been offered for his capture.

Quote:
Turkish violations keep Greece on standby

Despite recent meetings with top-ranking Turkish government officials and the mutual expression of good intentions from both sides, Greek authorities remain on standby following a spike in violations of Greek air space by Turkish fighter jets, Kathimerini understands.

Turkish aircraft entered Greek air space without clearance a total of 81 times within the space of three weeks in December following a period of relative calm, putting Greek defense officials on edge.

Turkish violations during Greek pre-election periods are not unusual and there are many who believe the Turkish show of force is more a message to Turks rather than Greeks by Ankara which faces its own domestic upheaval. However, with Greece bracing for fresh political and financial upheaval as snap elections loom, the Turkish overflights, and the return of a Turkish seismic vessel to Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone, remain serious causes of concern.

“Anything that is repeated more than once is not a coincidence,” a Hellenic Air Force official remarked.

Turkey’s recent behavior in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean was a key focus of discussion at a meeting between outgoing Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and Greece’s military leadership, Kathimerini understands.

This is about Cyprus but I'm posting it here anyway...

There are already Greek and British military bases in Cyprus, if I'm not mistaken.

Quote:
Russian Ambassador in Nicosia: Moscow Interested in a Military Base in Cyprus

Moscow’s official intention to reach a potential agreement with Cyprus for a military base on the island was expressed earlier this week via Russia’s Ambassador in Nicosia, Stanislav Osadchiy, according to local media. The issue’s resurgence comes just a month before the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, visits Moscow, which is scheduled for late February.

Answering journalists’ questions, Osadchiy confirmed his country’s interest in an agreement providing military facilitation in Cyprus, but noted that the matter is still under discussion, adding that at this stage, Moscow’s contacts with the Cypriot Foreign Ministry mostly concern the preparation of bilateral agreements to be signed during the Cypriot President’s visit to the Russian capital.

It should be noted that the Russian diplomatic representative in Nicosia said that he is closely following developments concerning the Cyprus problem and the island’s natural gas resources. Furthermore, he revealed that the issue of Turkish seismic vessel “Barbaros,” which on October 2014 violated Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), has also been discussed with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Russia’s will is to break the deadlock from all sides. Finally, Osadchiy pointed out that “we are doing everything to improve the already good relations between the two countries.”

Moreover, on Wednesday, the European Parliament issued a draft resolution for Ankara, underlining the Republic of Cyprus’ legitimate right to enter into bilateral agreements concerning its EEZ, while calling on Turkey to respect the member-states’ lawful sovereign rights concerning the exploitation of their natural resources. Furthermore, in paragraph 33, it reiterates its strong support for the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of a fair, comprehensive and viable settlement for both communities, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Finally, the draft resolution calls on Turkey to actively support the negotiations for the island’s reunification.

Cyprus, which is a part of the European Union since 2004, has been violently divided since 1974 after a brutal Turkish invasion and the following occupation of its northern lands or 37% of its territory. On its part, Turkey has repeatedly denied to recognize the Republic of Cyprus, despite numerous calls by international institutions and the European Union, which Ankara aims to join. At the same time, numerous United Nations-backed negotiations in order to reunite the island under a federal government have failed. In October 2014, Cypriot President Anastasiades suspended his participation in the peace talks following a Turkish NAVTEX for the conduction of hydrocarbons research in Cyprus’ EEZ by seismic vessel “Barbaros,” escorted by a number of Turkish Navy ships.

In addition to above posts:

Israel plans to deploy 20,000 commandos in Greek Cyprus in order to protect its energy projects in the area, Anatolia news agency reported Sunday. According to the report, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Greek Cypriot counterpart, Demetris Christofias, met in February in order to discuss the two countries' joint ventures.

Netanyahu reportedly offered to undertake all the expenses required to construct a gas plant needed to extract the natural gas found in the Mediterranean Israeli Sea and in exchange, he asked that all the 10,000 personnel that would work at the plant be brought in from Israel with their families.

Last week, Europe hurriedly offered Greece a new bailout deal … the Greek parliament rushed to pass new Draconian reform laws … the German parliament did the same … and the ECB promptly dished out more money to keep the

country’s banks afloat.

Nearly everyone — lenders, borrowers and politicians — did exactly what they vowed never to do.

Why?

Most people think it’s because they want to defend the euro at all costs. True.

But there’s more to all this than meets the eye: There are hidden time bombs that are driving all players down the same old path of more bailouts and debt pile-ups.

These hidden time bombs have a name: Derivatives.

And they have a number: $630.1 trillion.

That’s right. According to the Bank of International Statistics, at yearend last year, the world’s total notional value of derivatives traded over the counter (outside of organized exchanges) was $630.1 trillion.

That’s about eight times the gross domestic product of the entire planet.

It’s nearly 47 times the total amount of mortgages outstanding in the United States.

And it’s over 34 times greater than the already-huge U.S. national debt.

So here’s the hidden timebomb story in a nutshell:

Angry protesters greeted top EU officials visiting the Greek island of Kos on Friday to see the impact of the migrant crisis, as the European Commission's vice-president Frans Timmermans warned

that Europe is facing a "moment of truth", AFP reports.

About 20 people, including far-right-activists, booed Timmermans and EU Home Affairs Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos, who are touring countries on the frontline of a crisis that has seen more than

350,000 people cross the Mediterranean this year in search of new lives in Europe.

Protesters shouted "Traitors!" and "You can't even protect our own borders!" as the officials arrived for a press conference at a town hall on Kos, one of several Greek islands struggling to cope as thousands

of people arrive from Turkey.

Some threw eggs in their direction, while others shouted "Get out" and "We don't want a centre for criminality", in a reference to refugee centres.

Timmermans told the press conference that Europe will be left to "the xenophobes, the extremists, who will destroy it" if it fails to help people fleeing war and persecution.

Some 7,600 migrants enter Macedonia from Greece in 24 hours

Migrants are flowing in increasing numbers through the Balkan peninsula towards Hungary as Greece ferries them from inundated islands to Athens, from where they head north to Macedonia.

Fifteen babies and children die as boat sinks off Greek coast

Quote:
Thirty-four refugees, almost half of them babies and children, drowned when their boat sank off a Greek island, almost certainly the biggest death toll in those waters since the migrant crisis began.

Four babies, six boys and five girls died when the wooden vessel carrying them overturned yesterday morning about 5km east of the island of Farmakonisi, close to Turkey's coast.

Tens of thousands of mainly Syrian refugees have braved rough seas this year to make the precarious journey from Turkey to Greece's islands, mainly in overcrowded dinghies.

The coastguard said 68 people were rescued from the water and another 30 from the same boat were found on Farmakonisi.

On Lesbos, an island that has borne the brunt of Greece's migrant intake, witnesses saw 10 dinghies arriving within 90 minutes yesterday.

Syrian refugees have made Lesbos a war zone amid fears ISIS is entering Europe
Quote:
Syrian refugees have turned Lesbos into a war zone, residents claim, as migrants chant 'f*** you' at Hungarian police amid fears ISIS is using the crisis to enter Europe

Greek islanders describe their fear after 20,000 refugees arrived on Lesbos

One in five people on the island is a refugee - the vast majority from Syria

News comes as video showed refugees clashing with Hungarian police

Swear and attack officers while chanting the Islamic slogan 'Allahu Akbar'

Meanwhile two men suspected of being ISIS fighters have been arrested in Europe after they uploaded photos showing them hiding among refugees

Residents living on Lesbos have described the Greek island as a 'war zone' following the arrival of 20,000 mainly Syrian refugees over the past few weeks.

The daily arrivals mean that desperate refugees currently make up one in every five people on the island, which lies just a few miles from the Turkish mainland, across the Mytilini Strait.

Locals have accused the refugees of bringing Lesbos to a standstill, overwhelming the local infrastructure and leaving residents feeling so threatened that many of them have stopped leaving the house to go

to work and are no longer sending their children to school.

The news comes as two men suspected of being ISIS terrorists were arrested in an unspecified eastern European country after after intelligence groups noticed they had started uploading photographs taken

in cities hit by the refugee crisis to their social media pages.

The news comes as tensions were raised across Europe, which is struggling to come to terms with its worst refugee crisis in 70 years.

Refugees chanted Islamic slogans and shouted 'f**k you' during clashes with Hungarian police last week, it was claimed, as tensions over the migrant crisis continue to grow across Europe.

THERMOPYLAE, Greece (Reuters) - Flaming torches raised, far-right Golden Dawn supporters dressed in black chanted the Greek national anthem as darkness fell on Thermopylae, where King

Leonidas and 300 Spartans defied a vast Persian army in 480 BC. Standing before them, a member of the European Parliament from Golden Dawn, the euro zone's most extreme right-wing political party,

roused the crowd with defiant denunciations of enemies at home and abroad ahead of a national election on Sept. 20.

"The message of Leonidas - Molon Labe (Come and get it) - is as timely today as ever for everything tormenting Greece," the retired lieutenant general, Eleftherios Synadinos, told supporters waving flags

bearing the party's Swastika-like emblem."We're not like everyone else with heads bowed down.

We're upright, we're standing and the message will be delivered on Sept. 20 ... We must not surrender arms. We must not back down," he said, to which the crowd roared: "People! Army! Nationalism!"

Golden Dawn, whose leaders are on trial on charges of belonging to a criminal gang that attacks dark-skinned immigrants and leftists, has kept a low profile since a government crackdown put top party officials in jail in 2013
