The HMS Birkenhead Drill
Today we hear endless recriminations and complaints against men, particularly White men throughout history.
And we never hear the other side of it. We never hear about the endless double standards that affect men adversely. Like, for instance, "the women and children first" rule at sea. We never hear about the heroism and the generosity of White men. We never hear about their suffering and sacrifices. In 1852, the British troopship Birkenhead foundered off the coast of South Africa. More than 400 men chose to drown or be eaten alive by sharks rather than allow one single woman or child to suffer. 200+ women and children were saved. |
