Default Dubliner Ronnie may get statue honour

By Brian Hutton

Thursday October 02 2008

A STATUE of Ronnie Drew may soon be erected in his beloved Dublin under a plan being discussed by the city's council.

Deputy Lord Mayor Emer Costello believes there is broad support among her colleagues for a fitting memorial to the folk legend among the streets he helped make famous.

She is tabling a motion before Dublin City Council next week which could see money set aside for the project from cultural funds in next year's budget.

"Ronnie Drew was Mr Dublin," she said of the balladeer and founder of The Dubliners, who died in August.

"I think he will be remembered for years to come but there should be a physical manifestation of the city's regard for him. I think it would be negligent of the city not to do it."

Ms Costello said she would like to see a tribute similar to the popular statue, off Grafton Street, of Thin Lizzy rocker Phil Lynott.

A memorial has already been planned for Drew's fellow Dubliner Luke Kelly in the Docklands.

"Ronnie Drew was a fantastic man, he was really the embodiment of Dublin. He was synonymous with Dublin,'' said Ms Costello.

If agreement is reached in principle at Monday night's meeting, the council's Arts Strategic Policy Committee will be charged with drawing up a detailed plan with costings and a timeframe.

Default Non-Irish seeking unemployment benefit up 80%

The number of foreign nationals applying for unemployment benefit has increased by almost 80 per cent over the past year, new figures show.

The increase has been felt most sharply by members of former EU accession states where numbers have jumped by some 144 per cent since September of last year.

Overall, a breakdown of live register figures for last month by the Central Statistics Office shows a total of 240,000 people were signing on last month, an increase of almost 50 per cent compared to the same period year.

Of this, the vast majority were Irish (83 per cent, or 199,000) and the remainder were foreign nationals (17 per cent, or 41,200). The CSO's figures - based on data supplied by the Department of Social and Family Affairs - do not provide a breakdown by nationality.

The estimated proportion of foreign nationals in the workforce is estimated to be around 17 per cent.

When the foreign national figures are broken down, they show that most who have signed on the live register are members of former EU accession states (8 per cent), followed by UK nationals (4 per cent), those outside the EU (3.4 per cent) and the "EU 15" (1 per cent).

The increase in numbers applying for unemployment benefit or the jobseekers' allowance over the past year has been dramatic for both foreign and Irish nationals.

The number of Irish has increased from 147,000 to 199,000 (40 per cent) between September of 2007 and 2008, while foreign nationals signing on have increased from 23,200 to 41,200 (77 per cent).

The data also shows the mid-east region - which includes commuter belt counties such as Kildare, Meath and Wicklow - has seen the highest rise in unemployment rates over the last year. The CSO says numbers signing on in this area jumped by 64 per cent since September of last year.

Dublin, which is measured as a separate region, experienced the smallest per centage increase in live register figures over the past year at 40 per cent.

Overall, the live register has jumped by almost 50 per cent over the last year. Some 79,565 people have signed on over the past year, taking the total number of claimants to 240,217.

The live register is based on the number of claimants for the jobseekers benefit, applicants for the jobseekers allowance and applicants for credited social welfare contributions.

Responding to the figures yesterday, Fine Gael's immigration and integration spokesman, Denis Naughten TD, said proportion of foreign nationals joining the live register highlighted the need for extra language supports.

"There is a complete lack of English language courses available to both employed and unemployed migrants. By equipping migrants with the required English language skills, it will allow them move up the value chain which will in turn benefit our economy," Mr Naughten said.

"As the economy falters, some economic migrants will return home, but we have many who have made Ireland their home, and language is obviously a barrier. It is government's job to remove these barriers to employment."

Default Over 40,000 Immigrants are claiming the Irish Dole

We have been told by our very own politicians that all the thousands of immigrants would all pack up and head home in these tough economic times.

However today's CSO figures clearly show that this is not the case at all.

In fact there are 41,214 immigrants signing on, which equal to 17% of the overall live register figures.

Nearly a Qtr of all the people signing on each week are not Irish!

Clearly we dont know the circumstances of all these 41,000 people, we don't know if they are claiming for children, wives, husbands and so on. But if we take the basic payment of 192 euro per week a rough calculation tells us that we are now paying a minimum of €7,872000 per year. Now this figure rises when you include spouses, children and child benefit payments. Also we have other secondary benefits associated with unemployment such as winter fuel allowance, Christmas bonus.

So even a conservative figure of 10 Million would still be some way off the true cost of the Non Irish Unemployed to the state.

Today the government announced the Irish Economy is about to go into a prolonged 2 year recession, can we really afford to keep paying out this sort of money to people who have no ties to this country?

With a budget coming up and the likely hood of tax increases for those who are lucky enough to have jobs, would 10 million be better spent elsewhere?

Angry Bilderberg Group says Ireland set for Lisbon 'dog house'

IRELAND will be in Europe's "dog house" if we reject the Lisbon Treaty in a second referendum, according to the chairman of the secretive global businesss organisation, the Bilderberg Group.

Viscount Etienne Davignon issued the stark caution in a rare interview ahead of addressing an international conference on Lisbon in University College Cork (UCC) on Wednesday.

"Ireland will be in the dog house if it says no for a second time", Davignon told the Sunday Tribune." The other states who ratified the Treaty have now become hostages of the Irish position and the Irish should have had some respect for the opinions of the other states.

jewsign Judeo-Femmunist June Levine is honored in Ireland

FRIENDS AND former colleagues have paid tribute to June Levine, the Dublin-born feminist, writer and journalist who has died at the age of 76.

Levine is the author of two best-selling books: Sisters, which recorded her involvement in the women's movement in the 1960s and 1970s; and Lyn, written with prostitute Lyn Madden, which told Ms Madden's story and related her abuse by murderer John Cullen.

She played a central role in the rise of the Irish women's movement and, with journalists Nell McCafferty and Mary Kenny and others, travelled to Northern Ireland on the "Contraceptive Train" in 1971, importing condoms at a time when they were banned in the Republic.

McCafferty yesterday described Ms Levine as "astonishingly brave". Novelist Colm Tóibín said Levine was "one of the old school of Irish journalists who wrote because they wanted to change things . . . She was the most generous person, brilliant company. Her hospitality was like no one else's."

RTÉ Authority chairwoman Mary Finan, in whose house the launch party for Sisters was held, described her as "a friend in the fullest sense".

Caitríona Crowe, the archivist and former president of the Women's History Association, said Sisters was one of the crucial sources for women's history in Ireland. "As well as delivering a fantastic account of the women's movement, it gave us the untold story of growing up as a Jewish woman in Dublin."

Levine began her career in journalism in The Irish Times; her byline first appeared in the paper in 1949 on articles about fashion, Jewish refugees in Ireland and the wives of circus performers. In the 1950s she emigrated, having married a Jewish medical student from Canada, Kenneth Mesbur, at the age of 19.

Sisters describes her breakdown while in Canada, including a spell in hospital where she received electric shock treatment, and the break-up of her marriage. She returned to Ireland with her three children, Adam, Diane and Mike, in the mid-1960s. She worked as a journalist and became immersed in the women's movement.

She worked for a wide variety of publications, edited the Irish Women's Journal and worked as a researcher for the Late Late Show.

Sisters, published in 1982, also describes the abortion Levine had in Britain in 1967; in 1983 there was controversy when RTÉ banned discussion of the issue.

Lyn began life in 1983 as an article for Magill magazine, then edited by Tóibín, and was published in book form four years later. She published a novel, A Season of Weddings, in 1992 and edited part of the Field Day Anthology of Irish Women's Writing.

Levine lived with psychiatrist Prof Ivor Browne for over 30 years; they married in 1999. Her remains will be cremated at Mount Jerome cemetery tomorrow.

Default Gardai to join war on African cocaine traffickers

EU JUSTICE ministers including Ireland's Dermot Ahern are to declare war on west African cocaine traffickers.

The move follows the disclosure that the west African gangs supplied Europe with cocaine shipments with a total street value of €18bn in the past year.

Gardai are to join with other European police forces to target the gangs in a co-ordinated approach to tackling the cocaine crisis within the EU.

The new initiative will be given the political go-ahead at a meeting of justice and home affairs ministers in Luxembourg on Friday.

A spokesman for Mr Ahern said last night that the minister was gravely concerned at the extent of the trafficking and pledged that Ireland would play its role in the new crackdown.

The operation will be intelligence-led and involve close co-operation between the inter- national agencies.

The European cocaine problem has worsened as a result of a declining market in the US.

There are currently estimated to be 3.5 million cocaine users in the EU.

The shipments being smuggled in by the west Africans are said to have a wholesale value of €1.8bn, which converts into €18bn at street level.

Meanwhile, a new study here has revealed that family and friends have usurped the role of the shady drug dealer on the corner, with half of cocaine users supplied by those closest to them.

The research also revealed higher than expected use among lower-middle and working class groups.

Double

Over a five-year period, cocaine use has almost doubled, with 5pc of those aged between 15-64, or around 145,000 people, admitting ever having used the drug in the 2006/7 study, up from 3pc in the first survey in 2002/3.

Nearly one in four of those surveyed knows someone who takes cocaine. The second All Ireland Drugs Prevalence Survey, commissioned by the National Advisory Committee on Drugs (NACD), found the number of people getting cocaine through family and friends had risen to 49pc.

"It certainly shows a certain attitude to cocaine," the NACD's Mairead Lyons said. "I think the fact that people are using it so socially perpetrates the myth that it is a harmless drug when we know absolutely and very concretely that it is a very dangerous drug."

Minister of State for Drugs John Curran said "public education" was important to raise awareness of the health risks linked to the drug.

More than 80pc of older adults got the drug in friends' houses. One in 10 cocaine users reported failing in efforts to stop taking the drug, while a further 8pc reported stopping as part of a rehab programme.

Default Libertas seeks candidates for pan-European party

LIBERTAS WILL need to run a significant number of candidates in next year's European Parliament elections if it is to be an effective pan-European party, its founder Declan Ganley has said.

The leader of the anti-Lisbon Treaty group yesterday confirmed a report in Saturday's Irish Times that his organisation has registered as a European political party.

He also said that Libertas would need substantial resources to mount a campaign, adding that candidates would need to stand in at least seven or eight states to make the move worthwhile.

Angry irish join british army

The British military is experiencing a large rise in recruits from the Irish Republic, figures obtained by BBC Radio 4's PM programme have shown.

They reveal a four-fold increase in military personnel from the Irish Republic during the past three years.

Between 2005 and 2006, just 3% of recruits entering the military through its recruitment centres in Northern Ireland came from the Republic.

The figure so far this year is 14%, and officers believe it will rise further.

Michael Godman, 19, from County Offaly, is one of those who would like to join the British military, hopefully to become a sniper.
He says he wanted to be a soldier from a young age and it was an easy decision to approach the British rather than the Irish military.
"The Irish Defence Force - as the name suggests - is a defence force, it's not an army," he says.

Ciaran Curran, 23, says he wants to join to experience a combat environment.

"A friend of mine joined a couple of years ago and he was out in Afghanistan this year with the Royal Irish Regiment. He got his action and I want mine," he says.

BBC News

These kids are joining the british army looking for an "adventure". They want to go to the middle east, shoot terrorists and play at being a soldier. The Republic's own military really is pathetic, the worst in Europe I recall a report not long back saying, so they'd never seriously look there for a chance to get their kicks. It probably is true that most of them don't think too much about the oath to the queen when they make it, but then most people dont think, full-stop.

For more than 80 years 26 counties of Ireland have been a sovereign country independent from britain - which is supposedly something we Irish are fiercely proud of. Why then do why find this happening? Why do these kids think it acceptable to join the british army?

The elephant in the room no one wants to mention is just how close to britain Ireland is. The same people who will drunkenly belt out Amhrán Na bhFiann at Croke Park once a year are the same that will slavishly follow the various bits of trash that comes out of the british media every other day of the year. Much as we like to paint ourselves in a green and glowingly fenian light, the reality is that we normally only pay lip-service to the Irishness we say makes us so distinct. We are a cultural province of britain, a colonial marketplace for british peddlers and have been for years. The fervour sparked by the war for independence has gradually dissipated over the handful of generations that've followed it, in all perhaps but the 6 northern counties. The old routine never really went away. dominated by british commerce, media, language, fashion and ideas - the only alternative to which our political leaders have ever provided is that we make prostitute ourselves to the USA or to mainland Europe instead - we have no truely strong sense of being Irish that definitively separates us from being british.

This must change if we are to save ourselves from complete destruction as a distinct people. If we had good quality, rigorous military service for youngsters perhaps we wouldn't have them looking to join the dubious crusades of foreign armies - perhaps also they'd be better disciplined, in better physical shape and have a deeper sense of duty toward their nation & community. Perhaps if our media, politics and culture weren't all directly lifted from britain our youth might better know the difference between being Irish and being british. Perhaps indeed.

Default 'Deal is already done' on Lisbon rerun

A FORMER senior MEP claimed last night that a rerun of the Lisbon Treaty vote was "a done deal" between Ireland and European Union leaders.

Danish veteran Jens Peter Bonde added that the deal means a new vote will contain declarations with lots of "nice words" that wouldn't actually change "one single paragraph" in the Lisbon Treaty text.

Mr Bonde, a noted Eurosceptic and an opponent of the Maastricht and Lisbon treaties, added: "I know that the French president has told European group leaders in the European Parliament, in confidentiality, that there is a deal now with the Irish government and the French presidency on the . . . rerun."

Default 'No Irish need apply' - Polish builders get their own back

'NO Irish need apply' - the signs are already going up on building sites abroad in a throwback to the grim days of the the last century.

But this time they are starting to appear in Poland as that country takes its revenge for the way in which some unscrupulous Irish contractors treated their countrymen during the years of the Celtic Tiger.

Trade union official Michael Kilcoyne - also president of the Consumers Association of Ireland - said it had recently been brought to his attention that the 'No Irish' signs had appeared on a couple of Polish building sites where workers were being sought.

Default "Sure its all Polish to me bud.."

Irish police have solved the mystery of a Polish recidivist who clocked up 50 traffic offences on different addresses and who was never caught, after one officer noticed his name meant driving licence in Polish.

An internal police memo cited by Irish papers on Thursday said officers taking details of Polish traffic offenders had been mistakenly using "Prawo Jazdy," printed in the top right corner of the driving licence, as the holder's name.

"Prawo Jazdy is actually the Polish for driving licence and not the first and surname on the licence," the police memo dated June 2007 said. "It is quite embarrassing to see the system has created Prawo Jazdy as a person with over 50 identities."
