Buttigieg on Exaggerated Infrastructure Jobs Estimate: ‘I Should Have Been More Precise’

PAM KEY 11 Apr 2021

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg admitted on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday” that he “should have been more precise” when confronted by the accuracy of the number of jobs that he said would be created by President Joe Biden’s infrastructure proposal.

On Buttigieg’s claim to several media outlets, anchor Chris Wallace said, “It turns out the study you’re citing from Moody’s Analytics says the economy will add 16.3 million jobs without the infrastructure bill, and 2.7 million more with it. So it doesn’t, as you said last Sunday, create 19 million jobs. Again, Secretary Buttigieg, why mislead folks?”

Buttigieg responded, “Well, you’re right. I should have been more precise.”

Far Left ‘Young Turks’ Host Blasts ‘Inexperienced and Clownish’ Pete Buttigieg

KYLE OLSON 13 Apr 2021

“Young Turks” host Ana Kasparian blasted Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Monday after he admitted to fudging job increases he claimed would come from President Joe Biden’s “infrastructure” proposal.

Kasparian pilloried Biden and Buttigieg: “Choosing someone as inexperienced and clownish as Pete Buttigieg to be the transportation secretary when you want to roll out this bold infrastructure bill is ridiculous.”

COVID vaccine passports not government’s role, Buttigieg says

By David Meyer
April 11, 2021

The Biden administration will not require “vaccine passports” by law, but stands at the ready to “support” companies who are pursuing the technology, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Sunday.

“We don’t view this as the role of the government, to create or mandate any kind of vaccine passport — but these technologies are there,” Buttigieg told CNN’s Jake Tapper when asked whether he supported airlines requiring customers provide vaccination documentation in order to fly.

“Private sector is working on them,” Buttigieg said. “We’re interested in following that, providing any kind of technical advice or support where needed.”

Pete Buttigieg: ‘Infrastructure’ Plan Important from ‘Racial Justice Perspective’

KYLE OLSON 20 Apr 2021

“Racial justice” is a heavy emphasis of President Joe Biden’s “infrastructure” proposal, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told The Breakfast Club on Monday.

“It’s roads and bridges,” Buttigieg said in response to a question asking what is in the ten-year American Jobs Plan, adding it will fix 20,000 miles of roads, which equals less than 0.5 percent of American roads.

He also said it will address 10,000 bridges around the country, or 1.6 percent of them.

“It’s improving our ports and airports,” he continued. “In fact, we’re going to double the resources for transit and this is important also for a racial justice perspective because black and brown Americans are more likely to rely on transit to get where they need to go.”

Pete Buttigieg: U.S. Shouldn’t Be ‘Too Proud’ to Learn from Communist China on Infrastructure

KYLE OLSON 28 Apr 2021

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in an interview Tuesday the United States should not be “too proud” to learn from countries the Biden administration claims outrank America in infrastructure quality.
(...)
According to the Biden administration, the U.S. ranks 13th in the world for “infrastructure quality.”

Its analysis concluded communist China is #3.
(...)
It was not clear if the Biden administration was evaluating traditional infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, or its expanded definition that also includes social services.

In 2017, a story published by Saďd Business School argued “China’s infrastructure investment may be doing more harm than good.”

‘The evidence suggests that for over half of the infrastructure investments in China made in the last three decades the costs are larger than the benefits they generate, which means the projects destroy economic value instead of generating it,” Dr. Atif Ansar, Programme Director of the MSc in Major Programme Management, Saďd Business School, said.

Committing to big projects is risky, the publication argued, because they are susceptible to cost overruns.

I have read some things about the Chinese building boom over the last two decades. The Chinese government went way overboard in building these large,
expensive projects like roads, office buildings, bridges, factories, etc.
It gave a temporary boost to the economy but now there is so much excess
capacity that there has been a bust cycle. All the industries that benefited from the building boom like cement, steel and related construction have been
experiencing some bankruptcies and layoffs. Plus there is the environmental
damage that needs to be taken into the equation.

Buildings in China often collapse because they were poorly constructed, this is so common that there's even a name for it: "Tofu-dreg project".

Quote:
"Tofu-dreg project" (Traditional Chinese: 豆腐渣工程; Pinyin: dňufuzhā gōngchéng) is a phrase used in Mainland China to describe a poorly constructed building. This phrase was coined by Zhu Rongji, the former premier of the People's Republic of China, on a visit to Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province to describe a jerry-built dam.[citation needed]

In China, the term tofu dregs (the pieces left over after making tofu) is widely used as a metaphor for shoddy work, hence the implication that a "tofu-dreg project" is a poorly executed project for which the government should accept responsibility.[1]

After visiting China in early 2011, Canadian journalist Lawrence Solomon stated that many Chinese people "fear that a 'tofu dam' might fail, leading to hundreds of thousands of downstream victims."[2]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tofu-dreg_project

And then there's the lead poisoning:

Quote:
Lead Poisoning in China: The Hidden Scourge

(...) Such scenes of heartbreak and anger have been repeated across China in recent months with the discovery of case after case of mass lead poisoning — together with instances in which local governments tried to cover them up.

In the past two and a half years, thousands of workers, villagers and children in at least 9 of mainland China’s 31 province-level regions have been found to be suffering from toxic levels of lead exposure, mostly caused by pollution from battery factories and metal smelters. The cases underscore a pattern of government neglect seen in industry after industry as China strives for headlong growth with only embryonic safeguards.
(...)
“What we are trying to underscore is how little has been done to address the massive impact of lead pollution in China,” Joe Amon, the organization’s health and human rights director, said in an interview. “It really has affected a whole generation of kids.”

In more developed nations, where lead pollution has been tightly regulated for decades, a pattern of lead poisoning like China’s would most likely be deemed a public-health emergency.
https://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/15/w...ia/15lead.html

Westerners who have lived in China will often tell you that the Chinese are bad-mannered, unhygienic, incompetent and corrupt, and that their society is barely functional. Yeah, we have so much to learn from these pieces of garbage. Thanks, Mr. Buttplug.

Host Laughs as Pete Buttigieg Predicts 30 Senate Republicans May Vote for ‘Infrastructure’ Plan

KYLE OLSON 3 May 2021

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was met with a laugh when he predicted as many as 30 Republican senators may vote for the “infrastructure” plan.

Appearing on the New York Times “Sway” podcast Monday, Buttigieg was asked about the prospect of a bipartisan deal.

The secretary claimed 70 percent of Americans support the $2.5 trillion spending extravaganza that redefines “infrastructure” to include electric vehicles and elderly care.

“We’re seeing this weird law of political physics that something that is wildly popular among the American people on both sides of the aisle can’t always get that same support in Washington,” he said.

Let’s make a deal: Biden meets with GOP to talk ‘compromise’ on $2.3T spend plan

By Steven Nelson
May 13, 2021

President Biden on Thursday met with six Senate Republicans to discuss possible compromise on his proposed $2.3 trillion infrastructure bill.

Biden hosted the top Republicans on relevant committees a day after he hosted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for the first time.

“I’m prepared to compromise,” said Biden, who was joined by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

Buttigieg on User Fees Paying for Infrastructure: Biden Not Interested in Raising Taxes on Regular People

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Affirms Pipelines Are ‘Best Way to Go’, Just Not Keystone XL

JACOB BLISS 20 May 2021

Pete Buttigieg, President Joe Biden’s Transportation Secretary, insisted Thursday, while testifying before the Senate Banking Committee, the administration’s stance is that pipeline is the “best way to go,” just not the Keystone XL Pipeline, which the president revoked, killing thousands of jobs.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) pressed the secretary, saying, “As Secretary of Transportation, do you agree with Secretary of Energy [Jennifer Granholm] when she says the pipelines are the best way to transport fuel?”

He answered by saying, “it depends on the context” of the situation. He jokingly said, “Nobody’s proposing that we establish a pipeline that goes directly to every gas station or every community in the country.”

Buttigieg: GOP in the ‘Neighborhood of a Trillion Dollars’ on Infrastructure a ‘Good Sign’

PAM KEY 27 May 2021

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Thursday on MSNBC’s “The Beat” that the latest $928 billion infrastructure offer from a group of Senate Republicans was “a good sign” in the negotiations on President Joe Biden’s $1.7 trillion plan.

Buttigieg said, “We met the urgency of confronting COVID with the rescue plan. Now, we got to meet the urgency of preparing the American economy to succeed for the next many decades with the American Jobs Plan and generational investment in the infrastructure we count on from the tradition of stuff like roads and bridges to newer things like the internet, access for everybody, to the internet and making sure that we have the right kind of care economy. So, as we continue this back and forth, and I will say, it’s been very above-board, very positive, even though we have clearly started out in different places. I believe that the conversation needs to continue to focus on what really is blowing up my phone which is, people around the country talking about their immediate infrastructure needs.”

Pete Buttigieg Claims ‘Still Lots of Daylight’ Between Biden, GOP on ‘Infrastructure’ Deal

KYLE OLSON 7 Jun 2021

Monday is the second self-imposed deadline Democrats have created to strike a deal with Republicans on “infrastructure,” and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg acknowledged there is “still lots of daylight” between the two sides.

Buttigieg first said Memorial Day was the date an agreement needed to be reached as some Democrats demanded they go it alone. Then he said June 7 — today — is the date Democrats need “a clear direction.”

But as of now, there is no “clear direction,” and despite Republicans countering with a nearly $1 trillion proposal, there is no agreement in sight.

Buttigieg told Face the Nation Sunday that President Joe Biden (D) will speak on Monday to Sen. Shelley Capito (R-WV), the Republicans’ representative on negotiations.

“There are a lot of conversations going on among a lot of members of the Senate and over on the House side,” Buttigieg said.

The Atlantic Lays Out Pete Buttigieg’s Path to Presidency — in 2024

KYLE OLSON 9 Jun 2021

The Atlantic magazine published a profile piece on Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Tuesday and plotted his path to the presidency that would involve him replacing incumbent President Joe Biden.

Writer Edward-Isaac Dovere wrote the glowing report about Buttigieg’s attempts to gather support for a massive “infrastructure” spending bill that redefines traditional infrastructure to include elder care and electric vehicles.

In the story, Dovere laid out Buttigieg’s potential path to the presidency — which he sought in 2020 — in 2024:

How Pete Buttigieg Cashed In On His Candidacy

Dan Alexander

Before Pete Buttigieg announced he was running for president, he needed to do some math. The South Bend, Indiana, mayor had run for office before—on a much smaller scale—and he knew how expensive it could be. There was the cost of the campaign, of course. But there was also the cost of giving up a day job and forfeiting wages. True to his consultant background, Buttigieg created a spreadsheet to run the numbers. “We could make it work, as long as we were very conservative,” his husband, Chasten, later explained in a memoir. “So it was decided: We were doing it.”

Smart move. Instead of costing Buttigieg money, the presidential run helped him earn gobs of it. Round-the-clock cable appearances made him famous, and fame led to money. Eventually, social media helped make Chasten a star, too, which led to even more money. Over the course of the next two years, the Buttigiegs went from earning the sort of modest salaries you might expect from a middle-school teacher and a small-city mayor to hauling in more than $1 million, according to our calculations.

Pete Buttigieg: Feds Should ‘Encourage’ Private Sector Vaccine Passports

KYLE OLSON 24 Jun 2021

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said this week the federal government should “encourage” the private sector to utilize vaccine passports.

“If a company, a business wants to take steps to keep their workers and their passengers safe, I would think that, from a government perspective, we want to do everything we can to encourage that,” Buttigieg told FOX 4 Monday.

“And that’s certainly our view at the federal level,” Fox News reported.

But a Department of Transportation spokesman told Fox News “the Biden administration does not support any form of government-mandated vaccine passport.”

Buttigieg has been consistent in his believe the private sector should be the enforcer.
