Slovenian troops "illegally in Afghanistan"

20 September 2010 | 13:11 | Source: B92

LJUBLJANA -- The union of the Slovenian military has sent a letter to the country's President Danilo Turk regarding troop deployment in Afghanistan.

The letter informed Turk that the Slovenian government was "illegally sending troops" taking part in NATO operations.

The union informed the commander-in-chief that the Slovenian government was unconstitutionally and illegally sending Slovenian soldiers to Afghanistan.

President of the Slovenian Armed Forces Union Gvido Novak added in the letter that it was necessary for parliament to make a decision first before Slovenian troops could participate in offensive, war actions.

Reports said that without a state of war being declared, the decision cannot be made without parliament, while the government is yet to send its proposal to MPs, only a week before the deployment of the Slovenian troops in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Colonel Vojteh Mihevc, the commander of the 14th contingent of the Slovenian Armed Forces which is supposed to be deployed to Afghanistan, has not denied that the army would be used in offensive operations outside the country's borders.

Novak warned in his letter that new Slovenian military mission to Afghanistan will not be peacekeeping and defensive any longer, and that it will be a war mission whose goal will be to defeat the enemy.

That is why the union has called upon the president to, in accordance with the Constitution, make a decision to protect Slovenian troops from missions that the government is unconstitutionally and illegally sending them to, and to protect them from committing planned and deliberate criminal acts while performing their tasks without a legal basis, said the letter.

PM: Slovenia is no servile state

1 December 2010 | 16:49 | Source: B92

LJUBLJANA -- Slovenia does not have a servile policy and Slovenian citizens should not be ashamed, said Slovenian PM Borut Pahor, prompted by a WikiLeaks cable.

The Slovenian PM commented on the content of the U.S. diplomatic dispatch, published by the Spanish media.

Then charge d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Ljubljana said in the dispatch that the Slovenian prime minister had offered to accept prisoners from Guantanamo in exchange for a 20-minute meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama.

Slovenia also offered U.S. company Westinghouse a contract on the second block of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant and easy access to leaders of the Western Balkans.

The Slovenian PM stressed today in Ljubljana that "people write a lot of things in cables believing that they would remain confidential" and that their publication was "putting the U.S. authorities in an uncomfortable position".

Pahor added that Slovenia did not have a servile but a sovereign foreign policy. As far as accepting prisoners from Guantanamo is concerned, he says he never approved of the war in Iraq, and that he was advocating the closing of that prison, but that he was ready to accept one of the prisoners from Guantanamo “as a friendly country”, without any compensation.

“The impressions of American side got are wrong. I won’t say, lying,” he was quoted as saying.

As far as offering a contract to Westinghouse, despite the fact that there is already a French bidder for the project, the Slovenian prime minister said that Slovenia wants foreign investments and added, “we want investors from the world which we are a part of”.

Pahor pointed out that the rest of the world saw Slovenia as a "respectable and sovereign country".

“I would like to tell the Slovenian citizens that they have a government which is conducting a sovereign policy. Nobody should be ashamed,” he reassured the public, and added that he met with U.S. representatives on Wednesday, when he "could tell they were uncomfortable".

However, they learned from Pahor that they could "still count on Slovenia support as an ally".

Slovenia in protest note to Croatia

20 January 2011 | 16:18 | Source: Tanjug

ZAGREB -- Slovenia has sent a protest note to Croatia protesting what it sees as prejudging of the sea border between the two countries.

The Croatian national television reported that, according to Croatia's rulebook, the border is established along the middle of the Bay of Piran, adding, however, that this will only be so until the completion of the demarcation between the two countries.

Official Ljubljana assessed that this was Croatia's unilateral move, but believes that this will not affect the achieved arbitrage agreement.

Due to the position of official Ljubljana, Slovenian Maritime Law expert Marko Pavliha stood down from the arbitrage committee.

"The problem is in the border line. The arbitrage will determine where the border is in the Gulf of Piran and where exactly Slovenia will have access to the waters," said Pavliha, adding that prejudging of the border in Croatia's official documents was "wrongful".
