Ireland a big draw for Indian healthcare workers

Move over UK, the new island is here. News is that healthcare workers from India, including doctors and nurses, will now probably find Ireland more hospitable that the UK when it comes to getting jobs and moving there.

“Irish hospitals are proactively recruiting nurses from India because of big domestic shortages. Many hospitals are sending recruitment teams to India because they are satisfied with Indian nurses who they have already employed. There is also a steady flow of highly qualified doctors from India to Ireland. We are now seeing a trickle of young medical students who are taking up training positions in Ireland,” says Catherine McManus, visa office manager and third secretary at the Embassy of Ireland in Delhi.

Official figures show that most of the nurses who have joined the nurses register in Ireland in recent years are from India and the Philippines. A recent study by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) found that 57% of the nurses who joined the register in 2006 are from the two nations. “Overseas trained nurses from outside the European Union are an essential component of the Irish nursing workforce. Over half of the nurses registered on the Irish nursing register in 2005 and 2006 came from India or the Philippines,” Niamh Humphries, a researcher at the University College of Dublin, recently pointed out.


In fact, RCSI is worried about the big shortage of nurses in Ireland. “There is a very high dependence on overseas nurses. The health service executive needs to improve nurses’ pay and treat them better in order to retain them,” says Dave Hughes, deputy general secretary of the Irish Nurses Organisation. The RCSI is also worried that most of the migrant nurses do not intend to stay in Ireland on a long-term basis. The high cost of enrolment on the nurses register is reported to be one of key complaints of Indian nurses. Visas cost the foreign nurses Euro 1,500 to register to work in a hospital and another Euro 1,500 to move to another hospital.

Meanwhile, Ireland is also attracting Indian doctors from the UK where job opportunities have been dwindling in the last couple of years. While doctors from India who wish to practice in Ireland need to qualify for the Temporary Registration Assessment Scheme (TRAS) examination, those who have UK equivalent qualifications don’t need to take the exam.

“There are a large number of Indian healthcare professionals moving to Ireland, including many from UK. The list of shortage areas includes physiotherapists and occupational therapists and we are fast-tracking visas and work permits for Indians who seek jobs in health services sector,” says Pat Bourne, deputy chief of mission, Embassy of Ireland in Delhi. Many of the visitors’ visas for Ireland issued in India are to the family members of healthcare professionals who are settled there. Besides healthcare professionals, Ireland’s National Rail has also been on a hiring drive in India in 2007. “Our National Rail network needs highly skilled railway engineers and India can provide the expertise required in that field,” Mr Bourne said.

This kind of shit makes me sick. One of the purest "Whitest" countries on earth. Voluntarily asking to have their heritage destroyed.
