Fidesz talks like Jobbik, says party leader Gabor Vona
By MTI The political rivals of Jobbik will only be able to eliminate the party if they implement its programme, party leader Gabor Vona said on Saturday. Vona analysed Hungary’s political situation and outlined his radical nationalist party’s plans for next year’s elections in a camp organised by the Transylvanian Hungarian youth group EMI at Borzont, central Romania. “Fidesz speaks like Jobbik but acts like the Socialists,” he said. Vona appreciated ruling Fidesz’s policy towards Hungarian communities abroad which he said was inspired by Jobbik’s programme but criticised it for being confined to symbolic acts. He also blamed the government for its failure to raise the issues of the post-WWI Trianon peace treaty and the autonomy of Szekler Land in international forums. Vona said Fidesz had not fulfilled its promises in job creation and public security. The ruling party also failed on its promises to hold to account those involved in illegal practices, he said. http://www.politics.hu/20130811/fide...er-gabor-vona/ 21 comments Freedom > Bela • 4 days ago Except it acts like the Socialist. Vona is not saying Fidesz has copied Jobbik policy, but that it has copied Jobbik rhetoric while implementing very few of Jobbik's policies, in that regard what is said and done by Fidesz are two very different things. On one hand it uses some Jobbik rhetoric, but acts like the Socialist. On everything Fidesz does it is very slow at implementing their own policies and doing have measures to push them forward. |

Romania condemns irredentist statements by Hungarian politician
Monday, August 19, 2013Share Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned a recent statement made by the leader of the Hungarian radical nationalist party, Jobbik, claiming that Hungary should seek autonomy for the Hungarian-populated Székely Land in Romania. According to the Hungarian agency MTI, Gábor Vona, leader of the Hungarian radical nationalist party Jobbik, accused the government of Viktor Orbán of failing to raise issues ... http://actmedia.eu/daily/romania-con...litician/47650 |

long Atlantic piece on trial of men defending Hungary against gypsies, whom Atl admits are hated by basically everybody
http://www.theatlantic.com/internati...e-most/278955/ Four years ago in a bar in Debrecen in eastern Hungary, fuelled by the neo-Nazi skinhead underground culture, these men devised a plan to commit a series of violent attacks on the country's Roma minority, who comprise around 8 percent of the population of 10 million. Using a combination of guns and Molotov cocktails, the gang killed six Roma, including a four-year-old child, and injured over 50. This country is divided on every topic, except hatred for the Roma. |

National Chauvinists ideolocially all over the place
The head of the Hungarian right: We want the Polish-Hungarian-Croatian federation!
Datum: Srijeda, 28 Kolovoz 2013 23:03 President of the largest Hungarian right opposition party Jobbik, Gabor Vona said in an interview with French television that he wants to create a Polish-Hungarian-Croatian Federation oriented towards cooperation with Russia. One of the most popular French TV Internet Pro Russia TV, which broadcasts news from Russia and Eastern Europe, announced a meeting with President of the Movement for a Better Hungary (Jobbik Magyarorszagert Mozgalom, skr. Jobbik), the largest opposition party, the right in Hungary. Gabor Vona professor of history, and Jobbik was founded during the study early 2000s. A representative of the young generation of Hungarian politicians who oppose the remnants of the former communist structures, Euro-Atlantic and neoliberal politics of Hungarian government, as well as seeking the preservation of Hungarian independence and traditional values. The party in 2009 received 14 percent of the vote in elections to the European Parliament, and the 2010th Hungarian parliamentary elections, winning 16% of the vote and 46 seats. According to the most current poll, Jobbik enjoys the support of more than 20% of Hungarian voters, making it the second volume and the largest opposition party. More than a third of young people in Hungary supports Jobbik, a large number of voters the party has among the Hungarian minority in neighboring countries. Gabor Vona believes that the last 23 years of democratic Hungary does not bring any changes to the pre-communist period, because, as he says, Hungary still ruled by men who were associated with the former communist regime. 'I must also mention our entry into the European Union because the EU has helped this process, which allowed - after the end of communist dictatorship - the Socialists to gain legitimacy and maintain political and economic power in Hungary. European Union fraternizing with these people, help them, "said Vona for French television. President of Jobbik considers European Union failure of the project and believes it will cease existence in the near future. According to him, Western Europe, led by France and Germany see Eastern Europe only as a recruiting cheap labor and a market for their products. Although our Croatian public views Viktor Orban and Fidesz as opponents of European bureaucracy, the head of the Hungarian right opposition disagrees with such qualifications of current Hungarian prime minister. 'If we look at important strategic issues, economic exploitation of Hungary, or the future of the European Union, we can not see any difference between them (the Socialist Party and Fidesz). Viktor Orban wants to appear as a freedom fighter in Hungary, but at the same time, during the session of the EU authorities, he constantly sign all decisions, documents and decrees that go towards creating a United States of Europe, "explained Vona their views on the current Hungarian government. He advocates for Europe of the Nations, and says he wants "real Europe, faithful to its Christian, Greek and Roman values, a Europe that is based on these values, which protects those values and defend them from any attack." Jobbik today, like most right-wing Eurosceptic parties committed to cooperation with Russia, which sees an alternative model of neo-liberal and multi-cultural western Europe. In May in Moscow officially signed an agreement on connecting Jobbik International Eurasian movement, a political organization near the Kremlin official. But what is not common for the European right wing, is Jobbik's closeness with Turkey. as we touched on before in this thread with the so called Pan Turanism idiocy Gabor Vona expalins this controversial foreign policy attitudes as' euroatlantizam in Hungary being over and must be replaced by Eurasian policy, which would represent a break with the timing of our strategy with U.S. foreign policy. (...) In Hungary, which is in the middle of Europe, midway between East and West, it is important to maintain good relations with these two powers. Well a rather stupid explanation. So if you are against US hegemony you must run to the arms of Turkey, which itself is a US puppet, not to mention the fact that it has always had hostile intentions, being an enemy of Europe and seeking to this day to penetrate through its soft underbelly in the Balkans. Maybe that's another reason these idiots support shiptars and their expansion into Serbian lands. Short sighted chauvinist scum just so thay can do some damage to their neighbor, yet they want alliance with a nationalist Russia LOL! Gabor Vona said he hopes achieving 'the Polish-Hungarian-Croatian axis' that would represent an alternative to European integration. By Voni, 'all three countries have a similar history between East and West, where we had to survive in the middle of Europe, which was not easy achievement even for the Croats or Hungarians or Poles.' In support of the creation of the Polish-Hungarian-Croatian Federation, by the President of Jobbik, speaks not only to the historical closeness of our countries, but also of common interest. 'We can see that our problems are similar, our geo-strategic situation is identical, and our vision of the future may be the same. Such a block between East and West, North-South axis, with access to the sea and to the north and the south, contained the very important economic and commercial communication routes, which would result in political and economic strengthening in relation to the European Union, the exercise of our interests and the creation of economic, social and political conditions necessary for our survival between East and West ', explains his geopolitical vision Vona. Hungary right opposes American hegemony in the world said Jobbik leader : ' the political leadership of the United States - whether it 's Republicans or Democrats - has been set as the world's policeman , retains its power by manipulating the global economy ... " Vona also addressed the issue of gay rights on the occasion of increasingly frequent and increasing demands of homosexual communities in European countries, particularly in France. ' I think this is the last act of the sick and decadent Europe , and I will do all that it does not infiltrate in Hungary. ( ... ) If Jobbik came to power , we will not only block the legal framework ( homosexual ' marriage ') , but even they may not be ' gay parade ' . I would not want to live in the country and I do not want my children to grow up in a country where the sick portrayed as healthy, valuable as worthless and ugly as beautiful. I'd like to redefine these things according to their original meaning. ' Finally , Vona referred to the remarks of certain Hungarian leftist political commentators and politicians of Fidesz and the Socialist Party of Jobbiks uncapability to rule land and possible international intervention in the event of arrival of the party in power . He claims that within the university and public administration there are a number of professionals who are members of Jobbik and will be made available to the party in the event of its coming to power . Possible international intervention in response to the creation of a patriotic government in Hungary is considered the real danger that the solution can only be seen in the current Jobbik connecting with countries that would be ready to ' defend freedom and justice for the Hungarians . " Hungary next year expect the parliamentary and local elections as well as elections to the European Parliament , and is considered to Jobbik could achieve great success in all the three- election. According to independent surveys , and even Jobbik hostile agencies , the party will win more than 20 percent of the vote , thus threatening the Socialist Party and become the largest opposition force in the neighboring country. http://www.dnevno.hr/vijesti/svijet/...ski-savez.html

Jobbik calls on the government to ban the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Hungarian operation
According to Jobbik, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre's Hungarian operation poses a serious national security risk so the party calls on the government to ban the organization and expel its non-Hungarian employees from the country. According to MP György Szilágyi, the organization incites hatred and attacks Hungary on a regular basis systematically interfering in Hungarian domestic matters. Szilágyi informed the press about Jobbik's position on the organization at Tuesday's press conference, soon after it was revealed that the Simon Wiesenthal Center wrote a complaining letter to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) due to an earlier “incident” when a group of football fans held up a sign at the MTK vs Ferencvaros football match on August 17 in Budapest, which said "In memoriam Csatáry László". Breaking News 04:05 Iran releases 6 Slovak paragliders suspect-
JPost.com Breaking News Hungarian far-Right calls Israeli media biased By SAM SOKOL 09/01/2013 23:51 Israel’s media is biased, the Hungarian nationalist party Jobbik told The Jerusalem Post on Friday. Replying to a request for an interview with party leaders sent by the Post earlier this year, a party spokesman said that his organization has had “negative past experiences concerning the Israeli media” and asserted that “we cannot hope for a non-biased interview.” Hungary’s third-largest parliamentary faction, Jobbik has been described as a “neo-Nazi” party and “a fundamental threat to Hungary’s democracy” by the World Jewish Congress. Earlier this year Jobbik chairman Gabor Vona accused President Shimon Peres of praising Jews for buying property in Hungary. “The Israeli conquerors, these investors, should look for another country in the world for themselves, because Hungary is not for sale,” Vona told supporters during a protest in May. http://www.jpost.com/Breaking-News/H...-biased-324995 |

Socialist, E14-PM heads demand House Speaker quit over call for gov’t to rule by decree
By MTI Comment [22] The leaders of the main opposition Socialists and the E14-PM electoral alliance on Tuesday jointly called for the House Speaker to resign over his call for more executive power for government. Radical nationalist Jobbik said Laszlo Kover’s statement pointed to a return of a people’s republic. Kover told commercial Inforadio on Monday evening that parliament should consider giving the government more room for manoeuvre. Kover argued that with more executive power the government could focus on everyday challenges and enforce decisions through decrees without the need to enact “even the most detailed rules”. In their joint statement, Attila Mesterhazy of the Socialists and Gordon Bajnai of E14-PM stressed that in Hungary, a democracy, the government answers to parliament. They said it was “appalling” that Kover, as House Speaker, had proposed expanding the government’s power by curbing the powers of parliament. All this is unacceptable from the head of Hungary’s parliament and is a “direct threat” from one of the leading politicians of ruling Fidesz, which “has proven over the past three years that it is not afraid of centralising its power, scrapping democratic checks and balances or even suspending constitutionality,” the opposition party leaders said. Jobbik said Kover’s statement indicated that Fidesz aimed to turn Hungary, where parliament already functions as a “puppet”, into a people’s republic again. Kover’s remarks prove that Fidesz, which has already “occupied all sectors arrogantly with its two-thirds” seeks to further cement its power, Adam Mirkocki, the party’s spokesman told a press conference. http://www.politics.hu/20130910/soci...-speaker-quit/ |

Thanks, Joe, that's a good interview. Very nice close by the guy, seems straightforward. As with Golden Dawn, Jobbik will find the christians go squishy at just the wrong moment. Any social normalcy the church supports - well, that stuff doesn't belong to them. And they have proved they can't protect it.

Local Fidesz officials follow Jobbik in opposing Roma cultural centers
By Lili Bayer Comment [22] Fidesz officials in several towns, including Hungary’s fourth-largest city, Miskolc, have bowed to pressure from the far-right Jobbik party to renege on plans to open local Roma culture and education centers, Magyar Narancs reports. While Fidesz mayors and city councils have initially welcomed plans for the construction of such a culture and education center in their towns, protests and petitions from Jobbik activists have led officials in Miskolc and Székesfehérvár to withdraw their support for the project. This past week, the mayor of Ózd, whose town council caused an international uproar earlier this summer when it shut off the public water supply many of the town’s Roma rely upon for safe drinking water, announced that Ózd will reverse its May decision to support the construction of a Roma center. The mayor cited social tensions as the reason for the change. (A picture from a demonstration against the planned center is above left.) The New Széchenyi Plan, the cornerstone of the Fidesz government’s strategy for using European Union funding to promote a range of development programs, calls for the establishment of new Roma culture and education centers. Jobbik calls tobacco concession most shameful “scam” of past 3 years
By MTI Comment [9] The national concession of tobacco sales has been the country’s “most shameful scam” of the past three years, a lawmaker of radical nationalist Jobbik said on Thursday. Jobbik had already signalled to the governing allies prior to the adoption of the tobacco concession law that the new regulation would sharply increase black market sales, said Gyorgy Szilagyi. He cited recent figures by market research firm Gfk Hungary showing an increase of black market sales of tobacco to account for close to 8 percent of legal sales. Commenting on press reports about some tobacco sales points going bust he blamed applying bad business models. Hungary introduced a state monopoly on retail tobacco sales in July, sharply reducing the number of places smokers can buy their cigarettes. http://www.politics.hu/20130919/jobb...-past-3-years/ Jobbik plans Oct 23 rally for people “cheated” by successive governments By MTI Comment [8] The radical nationalist Jobbik is organising a rally for the national holiday of October 23 for everyone who feels they have been “cheated and humiliated” by the governments of the past 24 years, party leader Gabor Vona said on Wednesday. Vona told the press that the event dubbed “rally for people damaged by governments” will welcome not only Jobbik supporters but everyone fed up with the Fidesz and Socialist governments. Jobbik wants to offer an alternative to these people, and will represent them in the months ahead, he added. The second Orban government since 2010 has failed to fulfil its promises of improving public safety, creating jobs and resolving the problems of people who borrowed in foreign currency, Vona said. Instead of healing the wounds of the previous eight years, Fidesz created new ones, he added. He cited the tobacconist tenders, “wasted billions” on attempts made in vain to reduce public debt, the flat income tax as well as the e-toll system and online cash registers as examples. http://www.politics.hu/20130918/jobb...e-governments/ |

Do you want me to go on? And, according to Jobbik, this is the country that is going to spearhead a real political, economic and cultural resistance against the Euro-Atlantic block. LOL! You couldn't make this shit up. Would love to know what Gabor has been smoking. My advice to him is, stick to the kikes and gypos, move closer to Russia, and stop with these idiotic completely unnecessary and politically damaging appeals to the Turkish enemy.

NEWS WATCH: Hungary’s Ruling Party Condemns Far-Right Antisemitism
Tuesday, October 15, 2013 (11:29 am) By Stefan J. Bos, Chief International Correspondent BosNewsLife reporting from Budapest, Hungary BUDAPEST, HUNGARY (BosNewsLife)-- Hungary's ruling Fidesz party on Tuesday, October 15, condemned a legislator of the influential far-right opposition for using "anti-Semitic "rhetoric" in relation to the upcoming Holocaust Memorial Year. Fidesz told BosNewsLife that Előd Novák, of the Jobbik party, used the Parliament's Committee on Cultural and Press Affairs on October 14 to question the government's measures to convert Budapest's unused Józsefváros train station into a Holocaust memorial. Novák also criticized the establishment of a civil fund for the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Holocaust next year, saying the memorial events were part of a "holocaust industry" and a "waste of public money". Hungary's center-right government plans to make 1.5 billion forints ($6.9 million) available through tenders to fund local memorials on the 70th anniversary. However, "We firmly reject the extremist statements made by the member of Parliament," said Fidesz legislator László L. Simon, who chairs the Parliament's cultural and press committee. Simon told BosNewsLife in a statement that the Jobbik representative "spoke against these plans and as such has violated the memory of those of our compatriots who fell victim to the Holocaust." INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE The rightist Fidesz of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has come under international pressure to distance itself from Jobbik ahead of next year's upcoming parliamentary elections. At least 600,000 Hungarian Jews are believed to have died in World War Two, when Hungary was a close ally of Nazi Germany. Some far-right politicians have defended the decision by Hungary's wartime leader Miklós Horthy to cooperate with the Nazis, saying this ensured that Hungarians received back lands that were taken under the Treaty of Trianon after World War One. Yet, "The tragedies of the Hungarian people, such as the decision at Trianon and the Holocaust, cannot be set in opposite corners and cannot be played off against each other," explained Simon. "The dignified remembrance of the Holocaust, in contrast to Előd Novák's statements, is not designed to strengthen a feeling of collective guilt, but instead contributes to ensuring that similar tragedies cannot occur in future," he added. "We regard it as unacceptable and outrageous for openly anti-Semitic statements to be made in Parliament or at the meetings of any of its committees, and we shall continue to take decisive action against such manifestations in future," Simon said. MORE INCIDENTS This isn't the first incident in Hungary's Parliament, where Europe's first antisemitic laws were introduced in the 1920s. Last year, a prominent legislator of Jobbik suggested to draw up lists of Jews "who pose a "national security risk". Jobbik's Marton Gyöngyösi said the lists were needed following the brief conflict in Gaza and should include members of parliament. The party is also linked to paramilitary groups marching through Roma villages that rights activists say are contributing to an atmosphere of hatred in which Jewish people, including a prominent rabbi, were physically or verbally attacked, Israeli flags torched and Holocaust monuments vandalized. In one of the latest known cases, bars of soap were nailed to the fence of the main synagogue in Szeged, Hungary's third-largest city, on September 17, following allegations that Nazis made soap out of the victims of concentration camps. NO COALITION Despite Jobbik's influence as the third largest political party here, Hungarian State Secretary Zsolt Németh told BosNewsLife earlier this month that his ruling Fidesz party won't seek a coalition with Jobbik, whatever the outcome of the 2014 elections. "I cannot speak for the government, but as a member of Fidesz I can say that will not happen," he said. Yet controversy remains over Fidesz involvement in memorials for Hungary's perceived anti-Semitic wartime Regent Horthy. Deputy Speaker of Parliament Sándor Lezsák, a Fidesz politician, attended last month's ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Horthy's reburial on Hungarian soil. "I lived ofcourse under Horty's rule in Hungary," said Annette Lantos, the widow of Tom Lantos, the first Holocaust survivor to be ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She narrowly survived Jews-hating Hungarian fascists. "I have seen how Horthy sold out to the Nazis in 1944," when most Hungarian Jews were massacred, she told BosNewsLife at a recent conference on anti-Semitism in Budapest. "He did not retire and did not renounce what was happening. So in view of his record and the way he totally sold out Hungary, the efforts to rehabilitate Horthy are deplorable," she added. Jobbik's menacing shadow over Hungary
When will Hungary step up to fight the anti-Semitism, racism and pernicious conspiracy theories promoted by Jobbik, the country's third most popular political party? By Mate Hajba | Oct. 23, 2013 Hungarian MP Balazs Lenhardt, left, formerly member of Jobbik party, burns an Israeli flag during a demonstration in Budapest, Hungary. Friday, Dec. 14, 2012. One of the engines behind Hungary's rising radicalism in recent years is the Jobbik party, often dubbed as a neo-Nazi group, and a leading force gathering together the country’s right-wing extremists. As the party has gained in popularity, attacks against minority groups have became fiercer. Jobbik, often mentioned alongside the Greek Golden Dawn Party as the two most influential radical parties in Europe, is associated with anti-Roma, homophobic, anti-EU and anti-Semitic incitement. Greece appears to be waking up - if belatedly - to the threat of Golden Dawn; but Hungary’s civil society and politicians have not yet committed to making top priority the fight against racism, racial stereotypes and obscure but influential conspiracy theories that poison relations between ethnic and cultural groups within the state. Jobbik's effectiveness is amplified by its excellent organizational skills and its strong, clearly-articulated set of nationalist values. Its activists are ready to respond quickly to political or social incidents; they can crowd-source many people in even remote rural areas to hold protests, and they know how to channel latent aggression, whether in the rich or poor, educated or not. Jobbik promotes an extreme paradigm of Hungarian patriotism and its favored targets are the State of Israel, the Roma minority and the EU. By tapping into long-held hostility towards certain minorities, the party has become a dangerous nexus bringing together a range of Hungarians whose common denominator are shared racist views. The party denies the accusations leveled both domestically and abroad of being of anti-Semitic and racist, claiming – in the case of Israel - that they only oppose Israel’s actions as a state and not the Jewish people itself. However Holocaust denial has featured in the speeches of several party members, most recently when a Jobbik MP proclaimed that the Auschwitz museum described events that "may not reflect the real facts of history." Just last year another Jobbik MP stated in the National Assembly that the names of politicians with Jewish origins should be added to a watch-list of public figures who could pose a national security risk. While Jobbik also denies the accusations of being intolerant towards the Roma minority, its harsh propaganda against the Roma, whom the party commonly characterizes as criminals and lazy, fill the public square. The party established its own paramilitary organization, the Magyar Gárda (Hungarian Guard), which posed as a civilian militia. The members of this organization marched on the streets of major Hungarian towns wearing traditionalist uniforms and fascist-era armbands - an action with frightening parallels to the 1930’s and 1940’s. After two years of operations the organization was banned, but immediately after that a new group was formed, calling themselves the New Hungarian Guard. One of the most infamous actions of the Hungarian Guard alongside with Jobbik was at a village that has a 20% Roma minority. The radicals claimed that there was a 'Roma-terror' in the country and that Roma committed ‘gypsy crimes’. While Jobbik representatives held speeches in the village, approximately 2000 nationalist activists marched through the Roma area in order to intimidate them. The two tropes against Jews and the Roma can sometimes be married together. This year when the World Jewish Congress took place in Budapest, party members protested against the event, claiming that Jewish people were planning to 'buy' Hungary. This and similar conspiracy theories are becoming quite popular amongst the growing numbers of Hungarian radicals. One extrapolation of this theory holds that the Roma people are controlled by the Jews; while the Roma are committing crimes, Hungarian society is being diverted from the real problem: The 'Israelis' who are coming to conquer Hungary through financial investment, leaving the Hungarians people as a people to be colonized by Zionism. In contrast to many typical supporters of right-wing radical parties abroad, Jobbik supporters do not coming from low-income areas with little education. The party is in fact more popular amongst those with above-average income. This is due to Hungary's difficult economic situation: Those with some wealth have more to lose than those without, and thus embrace more easily the nationalist rhetoric that could 'save' them. This is part of the reason that, according to current polls, Jobbik has become the third most popular party in Hungary. As is Golden Dawn. The other parties, populist in nature, are more concerned with fighting each other than treating the Jobbik problem with the seriousness it deserves. However, members of the major parties did step up against Jobbik over the suggestion of listing Jewish politicians. This anti-Semitic initiative resembled too closely legislation from the dark era of the Holocaust and served as a wake-up call for many Hungarian politicians. Let me guess, the dark era of Hungarian history is not the one when communist jews controlled the country and tortured the native population. But this limited reaction is not sufficient to tackle the problem of the rise of neo-fascism in Hungary. A more open social dialogue is needed to address the issue. Hungarians should shun the errors of communist times, during which the problems of racism and intimidation were swept under the rug. Far-right radicals like to taunt those who oppose them to go to areas where minorities live to gain a firsthand experience of how they abuse Hungarians and commit crimes. But it is the radicals who should leave their ivory towers of prejudice and face reality. Many of the difficulties cited about the Roma are caused by poverty: Stronger efforts by civil society to integrate the Roma more would allow young Roma especially to get proper education and thus make their way out of poverty. Notice jews don't even deny what Hungarians say, rather they offer a bogus explanation. Criminals cause poverty. Poverty doesn't cause crime. Fighting fascist populism can only come through encouraging a barely-existing dialogue between minority and majority groups in Hungary, to humanize those being demonized. The mainstream media also has an important role - to step up and actively debunk the racist and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories that are disseminated by Jobbik. Jewish definition of dialogue: jew talks, then you do what he says. There should be no underestimating how dire the situation is. The infamous slogan of the Jobbik party looms over Hungary like a menacing shadow: "God grant us a brighter future." The question is: What they mean by “us”? Not you, Hymie. That's what they mean. Alternative answer: I don't know kike, what do you mean by "us" in Israel? Máté Hajba is a Young Voices Advocate and blogger from Budapest, where he is studying law. NEWS WATCH: Hungary Remembers 1956 Revolution Amid Election Tensions
Thursday, October 24, 2013 (12:39 am) By BosNewsLife News Center in Budapest The 1956 Revolution was crushed by a Soviet military invasion. BUDAPEST, HUNGARY (BosNewsLife)-- Hungary has commemorated the crushed 1956 Revolution against Soviet domination amid increasing tensions between the government and opposition ahead of next year's elections. Speaking in front of what officials said were "hundreds of thousands of people" Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused the former communists-turned Socialists of having sold the country to foreign speculators and the international financial industry. "They were the ones and are always the ones who are willing to hand over Hungary to the colonizers," he told a large crowd on Budapest's Heroes Square. Orban also defended controversial policies that the European Union says reduced democratic check and balances, and forced mainly foreign-owned energy firms to reduce bills for households by as much as 20 percent. Elsewhere in Budapest, near the banks of the Danube River, the opposition united for the first time to bring together the Socialist party and smaller groups, including the Democratic Coalition (DK) and an alliance led by former Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai. SHOWING "REGIME" "We will show the regime that despite our differences we haven't forgotten that the enemy is Viktor Orban, not each other," said a spokesman for the Together 2014 party linked to Bajnai. Unity, speakers said, is crucial to defeat the increasingly autocratic Orban and his allies in the upcoming elections, expected in April or May. However Orban warned his ruling Fidesz party's "forces are ready for battle, just like we did in 2010." He told supporters to prepare and "finish what we started in 1956," a clear reference to the Revolution. Orban, 50, has come under international pressure to distance himself from the far-right Jobbik party, which won nearly 17 percent of the votes in 2010 and has become the third largest political force in this EU nation. Hungarian State Secretary Zsolt Németh told BosNewsLife earlier this month that Fidesz party won't seek a coalition with Jobbik, whatever the outcome of the 2014 elections. "I cannot speak for the government, but as a member of Fidesz I can say that will not happen," he said. 'EU DOORMAT' Jobbik leader Gabor Vona has accused both the government and opposition of not doing enough to prevent Hungary becoming the "doormat of the EU." Wednesday's commemorations came just days after Béla Biszku became the first Hungarian former communist leader to be charged with war crimes for his controversial role in the 1956 Revolution. JEW JEW JEW Prosecutors said Biszku, 92, was a member of the Communist Party's Temporary Executive Committee, which set up militias to shoot at mainly unarmed protesters, killing dozens of people. The forces opened fire at crowds in November and December of 1956, in Budapest and in the northern town of Salgotarjan, where 46 men, women and children were shot dead, according to investigators. Biszku has denied wrongdoing. Communism collapsed in Hungary in 1989, ending decades of Soviet rule when devoted Christians and dissidents were among those being targeted by the regime.
