Bestiality in the Jewish Bible
Bestiality in the Jewish Bible The subject of bestiality is one of those topics that we cannot discuss without feeling the need to retch violently, but discuss it we must because the (Written) Torah and the Tanakh (aka the 'Jewish Bible') do make several mentions of it and pronouncements on the subject. To be clear as to what we are discussing: bestiality is the practice of humans having sexual intercourse with animals and it has a long and rather inglorious tradition in the religious rites of many cultures. One such culture were the Minoans who are generally regarded as having practiced some form of sex with cattle as part of their religious rituals. It is thus not surprising that we find references in the (Written) Torah and the Tanakh to bestiality. The first is found in Genesis in relation to the choosing of a mate for Adam when it is stated that: 'Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper fit for him.' (1) In the above passage we should note what Yahweh is actually doing by creating the 'beasts of the field' and 'the birds of the air' in that he is specifically creating them to see whether Adam would accept them as a 'helper fit for him'. In other words: Yahweh created cows, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, pheasants, snakes and even stick-insects as prospective mates for Adam. However Adam rejected them all as mates: so Yahweh exasperated and having run out of material made Eve out of Adam's rib (who Adam then accepted as his mate). We know that Yahweh is advocating that Adam take an animal or bird to wife precisely because the book of Genesis' description of Eve (the 'helper fit for him') is precisely the same as that given to the 'beasts of the field' and the 'birds of the air'. It is difficult to interpret this passage any other way as an implicit approval of bestiality by Yahweh himself. An obsession with bestiality among the jews is also demonstrated by the book of Ezekiel which; when discussing the harlotry of Israel in relation to 'false gods' and idols in general, pictures it thus: 'Yet she increased her harlotry, remembering the days of her youth, when she played the harlot in the land of Egypt and doted upon her paramours there, whose members were like those of donkeys, and whose issue is like that of horses.' (2) Now just for clarity the 'members' of donkeys is a reference to the size of a donkey's penis and the 'issue' of horses (often rendered as 'emission') is a reference to the amount of semen a horse produces when copulating. We can see from this reference that the jews were clearly fascinated by the genitalia of (male) animals and that using them as an example of sexual pleasure in the context of prostitution necessarily suggests that jews had some experience with the subject of bestiality as a sexual activity. After all why not use a general metaphor to express the point (as is commonly done elsewhere in both the Torah and the Tanakh): not a donkey's penis and horse's sperm count? It is suggestive that sex with animals was a common enough practice among the jews to warrant the comparison of a prostitute having sex with animals with the religious prostitution of Israel before 'false gods' and assorted idols. After all; as before stated, if the practice was not relatively common among the jews then it would not have formed part of the collective jewish experience allowing them to interpret the verse per the writer's meaning. That the practice of bestiality was fairly common among the ancient Israelites is evidenced by the sheer number of specific prohibitions against it in the (Written) Torah. These are as follows: 'Whoever lies with a beast shall be put to death.' (3) 'And you shall not lie with any beast and defile yourself.' (4) 'If a man lies with a beast, he shall be put to death; and you shall kill the beast. If a woman approaches any beast and lies with it, you shall kill the woman and the beast; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them.' (5) ''Cursed be he who lies with any kind of beast.' And all the people shall say. 'Amen.'' (6) As we can see above the (Written) Torah is highly specific about forbidding bestiality among the ancient Israelites and the simple fact that it repeatedly issues proclamations against the practice in three of the five books of the Torah suggests that bestiality was a common occurrence among the Israelites. After all if it wasn't then why would not one explicit prohibition like that in Exodus be enough: why repeat it in ever more explicit and pointed terms in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy if it was not a very real practice (with the book of Genesis giving a rationale for practice) and a pressing problem among the ancient Israelites? The fact is that it wouldn't be prohibited so frequently and so explicitly if it wasn't an issue and that alone tells us that it was one. Moreover the multiple mentions of it in the (Written) Torah tells us that the prohibitions continually failed to stop the practice until the time period described by the book of Deuteronomy and the mention in the book of Ezekiel tells us that the practice of bestiality among the jews may be plausibly argued to have continued; probably more covertly, until a much later date.
