Scientists discover ultra-black deep sea fish, among the darkest creatures ever found The fish was found at 200 to 2,000 meters below the surface. July 17, 2020 At least 16 types of recently discovered deep-sea fish are among the darkest creatures ever found, according to a study published Thursday. The fish -- called the ultra-black fish, which live anywhere between 200 to 2,000 meters below surface -- are so dark that they often appear just as a silhouette, according to one of the authors, Alexander Davis, of the study, which was published in Current Biology. https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/sc...ry?id=71821303 |

What Happens to Wildlife Swimming in a Sea of Our Drug Residues?
Aug 12, 2021 Fish hooked on meth? It's a catchy headline that made the rounds a few weeks ago, but it represents a serious and growing problem. Our rivers and streams have become a soup of hundreds of drugs — mostly pharmaceuticals — that come from the treated water released from wastewater facilities. Conventional wastewater treatment can remove some, but not all, of the many chemical compounds we excrete from our bodies — or those we improperly dispose of — says Diana Aga, director of the RENEW (Research and Education in Energy, Environment and Water) Institute at the University at Buffalo. One of the worst offenders, she says, are antidepressants, which are a real downer for wildlife health. https://www.ecowatch.com/wastewater-...654630304.html |

Shape-shifting fish that confounded scientists for 100 years spotted off California coast Aug 12, 2021 Scientists piloting a remote submarine were able to catch a glimpse of one of the most mysterious and elusive creatures in deep water. Bright orange female whale fish (order Cetomimiformes) was seen half floating, half gliding under submarine lights 6,600 feet (2,013 meters) off the coast of Monterey Bay, California. The whale fish sighting was one of 18 conducted by marine biologists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in 34 years of deep sea research. https://www.livescience.com/weird-de...h-spotted.html |

Incredibly Rare Deep-Sea Highfin Dragonfish Spotted Off California's Coast May 4, 2022 When exploring in the ocean deep it’s not uncommon to come across some pretty alien-like lifeforms, but every now and then scientists stumble across something truly exceptional. Such an observation was recently made by researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) who captured on camera something they’ve only seen four times in more than three decades of deep-sea research: a highfin dragonfish. The exceptionally rare fish was spotted by Senior Scientist at MBARI Bruce Robison and colleagues who were on board the research vessel Western Flyer. Known as the highfin dragonfish (Bathophilus flemingi), it was shimmering through California’s waters at a depth of around 300 meters (980 feet) just outside of Monterey Bay. https://www.iflscience.com/plants-an...fornias-coast/ |

STRUCK GOLD I caught one of the world’s biggest goldfish – after spending 25mins reeling it in, says Brit angler
Julia Atherley Published: 23:16, 21 Nov 2022 Angler Andy Hackett is celebrating after catching one of the world's biggest goldfish Credit: BNPS The fish weighed a whopping 67lbs 4ozs and was nicknamed The Carrot after it's distinctive colour Credit: BNPS The fish is a hybrid species of a leather carp and a koi carp, which are traditionally orange. The Carrot is believed to be over 20 years old and was put in a lake at a fishery in France run by Brit Jason Cowler when it was young. But it has proven an elusive fish to catch over the years and is rarely seen out of the water. Andy, 42, spent 25 minutes reeling it in and was delighted when it tipped the scales at just under five stones. It was 30lbs heavier than what was considered to be the world's biggest goldfish caught by Jason Fugate in Minnesota, US, in 2019. And it was more than double the size of a 30lbs bright orange koi carp caught by Italian Raphael Biagini in the south of France in 2010. Andy, a company director from Kidderminster, Worcs, caught his record-breaker at Bluewater Lakes in Champagne, France. He said: "I always knew The Carrot was in there but never thought I would catch it. "I knew it was a big fish when it took my bait and went off side to side and up and down with it. Then it came to the surface 30 or 40 yards out and I saw that it was orange. "It was brilliant to catch it but it was also sheer luck." Andy posed for the obligatory photo with the catch before releasing it safe and well into the lake. He celebrated with a cup of tea afterwards. Jason Cowler said: "We put The Carrot in about 20 years ago as something different for the customers to fish for. Since then it has grown and grown but it doesn't often come out. She is very elusive. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/205023...gest-goldfish/
