Default Italy's garbage crisis prompts riots

Fed up with reeking uncollected rubbish, residents of Naples have used garbage to barricade streets protesting the long-running crisis.

An overwhelming 5,000 tons of household rubbish litter the streets of Naples, and another 45,000 tons line the roads of the southern region of Campania.

In southern Italy, firefighters have been called to control the blazing piles of moldering rubbish, escorted by police protecting them from stone-throwing locals.

The latest twist came a day before Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who was elected last month, is to follow up campaign promises to tackle the "scandal" by holding the first full cabinet meeting of his new government in Naples on Monday.

Earlier this month, the European Commission launched legal action against Italy before an EU court over its failure to tackle the crisis.

Many landfills in Campania are controlled by the Neapolitan mafia called the Camorra, which lines its pockets by subverting waste-handling procedures and shipping in industrial waste from the north.

In Naples, landfill sites have been full since before Christmas.

Default Police and protesters clash over Naples dump

NAPLES: Plans by Italy's Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, to deal with the rubbish piling up on the streets of Naples ran into trouble when locals clashed with police in an effort to stop the opening of a new dump.

Three protesters and six police officers were injured during the demonstration on Saturday night, the ANSA news agency reported.

The violence broke out at Chiaiano, on the north-western outskirts of Naples, when about 1000 protesters tried to block access to one of the new dumps that Berlusconi had designated to deal with the crisis.

Demonstrators tried to set fire to a bus and hurled rocks at police, who staged a baton charge and fired tear gas.

Among those present at the demonstration was Alessandra Mussolini, an extreme right-wing politician and the grand-daughter of Italy's one-time Fascist leader, Benito Mussolini.

Police said seven demonstrators were arrested and a photographer with Agence France-Presse said some demonstrators suffered minor injuries.

The tensions eased just before midnight, police said. But a correspondent for RAI public television, Romolo Sticchi, said he was hit by a police officer who took his camera, ANSA reported.

"A reaction of this type was predictable, I understand it, but it is in the interests of everyone to end this national tragedy," ANSA quoted the Interior Minister, Roberto Maroni, as saying.

Berlusconi ordered the opening of about 10 new dumps, which are to be guarded by the army, as one of a number of steps to try to resolve the dispute.

He announced the measures after a special meeting of his cabinet on Wednesday, held in Naples to show solidarity with local people over the crisis.

Although the official list of dumps was not meant to be released until yesterday, Chiaiano was one of the designated sites, ANSA reported. The town had also been chosen by the last government to host a waste dump, which had also provoked protests.

Berlusconi had warned on Wednesday that the new dumps would be declared military zones and protected as such.

"Blockade actions organised by minorities will not be tolerated," he said. Anyone who violently demonstrated against the new dumps could face jail terms of up to five years, he added.

jewsign Italy's Jewish youth want street renamed

Rome's mayor is backing a call by Jewish youth in Italy to rename a street in honor of dissident Iranian students.

The Union of Italian Jewish Youth urged Mayor Gianni Alemanno to rename the street where the Iranian embassy is located to "July 9th St." to recall pro-democracy student demonstrations in Tehran on July 9, 1999, that left dozens killed or injured.

In a statement late last week, Alemanno said the idea would have "high symbolic value" as "a strong sign of protest against intolerance." He said he hoped that city regulations regarding street names would allow such a name change to be made.

Meanwhile, the city of Bologna announced it would rename a street in honor of Giorgio Perlasca, an Italian businessman who helped save thousands of Jews in budapest during World War II.

jewsign Italy FM: EU stance on Israel in past swayed by intolerance of Jews

Italy's newly appointed foreign minister said Tuesday that the European Union has in the past taken an unbalanced stance on Israel, at times blurring the line between legitimate criticism and anti-Semitic sentiments.

Speaking before a forum on Israel-European relations in Berlin, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said: "I have to admit, if I look at the past, EU has taken on some occasions an unbalanced stance visa vis Israel, even by making an unacceptable confusion between the legitimate political criticism of the Israeli gut and the sentiment of intolerance against Jewish people that can become anti-Semitism."

Frattini, who was appointed by Italian Prime Minister Silvan Berscolini, is considered a supporter of Israel. His predecessor, Massimo D'Alema, often took a harsh line against Israel, particularly with regard to the Second Lebanon War and the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Frattini is expected to visit Israel sometime in July.

In his speech to the Israel-European forum, Frattini criticized the EU for delivering aid to Palestinian organizations which have incited against Israel.

"We ever found money given to NGOs close to Hamas using it to indoctrinates children against Israelis," he said, but added:

"Now things are changing completely. More awareness of the risk of growing anti-Semitism. Firmness vis a vis with Hamas. Support for the legitimate request of security of Israeli vis a vis the increasingly dangerous activities of Iran in the nuclear field."

With regard to the renewed negotiations between Damascus and Jerusalem, Frattini said that the European Union would support Syria as long as it acted firmly against terrorism.

"EU will support the further commitment of Damascus, provided that Syria takes a very firm stance on preventing and fighting terrorist activities, including support of terrorist organizations that threaten Israelis," he said. "This is one political condition that we want to stress once again.

Default Italian plans to fingerprint Roma criticised as 'ethnic cataloguing'

Italy has found itself under heavy criticism for a proposed crack-down on clandestine migration by fingerprinting Roma individuals, including children, with the European Commission admitting such a move would violate EU anti-discrimination rules and respect for fundamental rights.

According to Italian media reports, interior minister Roberto Maroni has announced plans to conduct a census under which all the Roma will be fingerprinted.

"It is a proper census to guarantee that those who have the right to stay can live in decent conditions and to let us send home those who don't have the right to stay in Italy," Mr Maroni said.

The minister - a member of the anti-immigration Northern League, which entered the Silvio Berlusconi's government following elections in April - has rejected accusations of "ethnic cataloguing."

The European Commission, tasked to oversee whether EU legislation is properly applied in member states, was at first reluctant to react to "statements by a politician".

Only when journalists insisted, the commission spokesperson said: "If you what to know an answer to whether it is possible, the answer is implicitly clear, the answer is no".

The spokesperson underlined that Brussels "is as attached to fundamental rights and the fight against discrimination as any other European institution". The question will be put to the Italians "at the very moment when a member state decides to use a legal tool" to fulfil its declarations, he added.

Earlier this week, the plans to fingerprint Italy's Roma community drew comparisons to the policies of Benito Mussolini, the country fascist leader during the second world war.

"I remember when I could not go to school with the others," Amos Luzzatto from Italy's Union of Jewish Communities said, according to the Daily Telegraph.

"There is a latent racism in Italian culture and it manifests itself cyclically," Mr Luzzatto added, stressing that "taking the fingerprints of youngsters from one ethnic group implies that you consider them to be congenital thieves."

UNICEF, the UN organization advocating children rights, has expressed shock and deep concern and called the proposal "provocative".

But despite sharp criticism, Mr Maroni has defended the plan, saying "this is the right path". "The people like UNICEF, who complain, should visit the camps and see the conditions in which children live," he said, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Some 160,000 Roma are estimated to live in Italy. Many live there without official permission and have set up temporary camps. The most recent census recorded 80,000 of them as being minors.

Amid claims of rising crime that the right blames on immigrants, the Italian government has kicked off a legislative process aimed at tightening up the country's immigration policy. For example, it is to be a crime punishable by up to four years in jail to enter the country illegally.

The UN High Commission for Refugees has previously urged Italy to drop its intention to make illegal immigration a criminal offence. It said one in three people who arrive in Italy seek asylum.

Default Naples garbage crisis to end

NAPLES, Italy, July 2 (UPI) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi promised to end the crisis that has allowed 18,000 tons of garbage to pile up in Naples and its surrounding province.

During a visit to the trash-plagued area, Berlusconi said the government is moving toward a solution and would have the streets cleared within two weeks, Italy's ANSA news agency reports.

Berlusconi criticized the area's rubbish collection firm for not working full crews seven days a week and said the city council would intervene to see that it did.

He also confirmed that agreements were imminent with other Italian regions to take some of remaining garbage.

A new incinerator for Naples is to begin service in January and construction of three additional incinerators are planned for the region.

Default Italy declares emergency for crumbling Pompeii site

The Italian government has declared a state of emergency at the Pompeii archaeological site to try to rescue one of the world's most important cultural treasures from decades of neglect.
A cabinet statement said it would appoint a special commissioner for Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried by an eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in AD 79 and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
"To call the situation intolerable doesn't go far enough," said Culture Minister Sandro Bondi, who took office in Silvio Berlusconi's new conservative government in May.
Archaeologists and art historians have long complained about the poor upkeep of Pompeii, dogged by lack of investment, mismanagement, litter and looting. Bogus tour guides, illegal parking attendants and stray dogs also plague visitors.
Some 2.5 million tourists visit Pompeii each year, making it one of Italy's most popular attractions, and many have expressed shock at the site's decay.
A report in daily Corriere della Sera this week said most of the 1500 houses at the site are closed to the public, its frescoes have faded to become almost invisible and restoration work that began in 1978 has yet to be completed.
The "state of emergency", which the government said would last for a year, allows for extra funds and special measures to be taken to protect the site.
"Every year at least 150 square metres of fresco and plaster work are lost for lack of maintenance," Antonio Irlando, a regional councillor responsible for artistic heritage, told the newspaper.
"The same goes for stones: at least 3000 pieces every year end up disintegrating," he said.
A long-running dispute between local authorities over how to look after Pompeii has only made things worse.
Pompeii's superintendent Pietro Giovanni Guzzo, who will now be flanked by the government's commissioner, said he had long denounced problems at the site - from retired guards who have not been replaced to the lack of a sewage system and poor "veterinary surveillance".
Two-thirds of the 66 hectare town, home to some 13,000 people in the Roman era, have been uncovered since serious excavations began 260 years ago.
The remaining third is still buried, but Corriere said the ground above it is being used as an illegal rubbish dump - a result of the trash crisis in the nearby city of Naples - and is scattered with tyres, fridges and mattresses.

Default Hundreds of African migrants hit Italian shores

Some 800 immigrants arrived in Southern Italy last Thursday, just a few days after the country declared a national state of emergency over what it describes as the "exceptional and persistent influx" of irregular immigrants.

A boat with some 400 hundred people on board was guided by Italian Coast Guard officers into the port of Lampedusa – a small island south of the Italian mainland,

Subsequently, a series of smaller boats bearing some 400 additional people were intercepted by the Coast Guard, bringing the total number of detainees to 876, according to Italian news agency Adnkronos.

The migrants include women and children, with most reported to be of African origin.

Their arrival has raised concerns that the additional migrants will overcrowd the Lampedusa holding centre, as it has practically reached its capacity of 1,500 people.

The news comes just a few days after Italy declared a state of emergency over what it sees as an "exceptional and persistent influx" of clandestine immigrants.

Prior to this latest migrant interception, the country recently passed a law that would make undocumented migration a criminal offence punishable by between six months and four years in prison. It would also make it possible for property rented to such an immigrant to be confiscated.

Italian government imposes national state of emergency
By Marianne Arens
6 August 2008

On July 25, the Italian government headed by Silvio Berlusconi proclaimed a national state of emergency due to the continuing inflow of refugees by boat from across the Mediterranean Sea. This means that the state of emergency already imposed on Italy’s three southernmost provinces—Sicily, Apulia and Calabria—will be expanded to encompass the entire country.

In 2002, during his second term in office, Berlusconi had already introduced a so-called “refugee state of emergency” in the south, which was continued in 2006 by the government led by Romano Prodi. Prodi also imposed a “water state of emergency” in May 2007 and somewhat later a “garbage state of emergency” in Naples. The current national state of emergency, however, has assumed new and alarming dimensions.

Since taking office three months ago, Berlusconi’s government has systematically undertaken a series of harsh measures against immigrants and refugees, intensified security laws and decrees and facilitated assaults and acts of violence against what the government terms “illegal immigrants”. This campaign has seen the burning down of a Roma camp in Naples while the local authorities looked on. With its proclamation of a national state of emergency, the government has now made provisions for the introduction of extensive police-state powers.

The Italian parliament did not participate in the decision, but was presented with a fait accompli. Deputies only learned of the newly imposed state of emergency from newspaper reports. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni (Northern League) then explained the measure to deputies in the lower house last Tuesday. The chairman of the house is Gianfranco Fini, the leader of the “post-fascist” National Alliance.

Maroni justified the state of emergency with reference to the “continuous and unusual influx of non-European Union citizens”. He then cynically claimed that the government would use its powers to “better assist the illegal immigrants by accommodating them in buildings rather than tents, and guarantee them more humane treatment”.

Internment camps and the domestic deployment of troops

Maroni’s real plan is to incarcerate the largest possible number of refugees in the shortest period of time. He confirmed a plan to double the number of internment camps and convert former barracks across the country into so-called “identification and classification centres”. These prisons will serve to implement the newly introduced security laws, which make “illegal immigration” a criminal offence. “Offenders” can be held for up to 18 months.

On the same day, Defence Secretary Ignazio La Russa of the National Alliance made clear that these camps will be guarded in the future by regular army soldiers. Last Wednesday, he signed a decree which, beginning on August 4, permits the use of 3,000 soldiers for domestic purposes. One thousand soldiers are to be deployed at the internment camps. An additional thousand are to be posted at sensitive public places (train stations, embassies, St. Peter’s Cathedral, etc.), and the rest assigned to street patrols alongside ordinary policemen.

The defence secretary declared that the soldiers will be allowed to arrest suspects “caught in the act of committing a crime”. He added, “I have imposed the foot patrols ... The young soldiers are very experienced, they have been used in peace missions where they are confronted with situations which are more problematic than those to be found in our cities.”

In other words, sections of the army are being deployed in the country’s cities who have already served and been brutalised by combat and civil war situations in Afghanistan, Lebanon or even Iraq. They are now being mobilised to serve in the cities of Milan, Rome, Naples, Padua and Verona. The deployment of troops for the rest of this year will cost over 31 million euros.

Ignazio Maria La Russa, whose middle name, Benito, is the same as that of the former Italian fascist dictator, Mussolini, is both defence secretary and president of the National Alliance, which is part of Berlusconi’s “People of Liberty” alliance. Like his father, La Russa was active in the neo-fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI) before taking an active role in transforming the MSI into the National Alliance.

La Russa hit the headlines two weeks ago with his proposal to fingerprint all of Italy’s inhabitants. The Italian Interior Ministry had been sharply reprimanded by the European parliament because it had begun systematically gathering the fingerprints of Sinti and Roma—including children. The European parliament called this measure an “act of discrimination based on race and ethnic origin”.

La Russa then reacted with his cynical proposal. “Let’s do it this way: we decide a law, which envisages taking all fingerprints ... in order to dissociate us from the slightest suspicion of racism. In the course of implementation priorities will be established and it could be that we find the fingerprints of Roma children amongst the most urgent cases.”

Reaction by the political opposition

Although the recent government measures represent a threat to the rights of the entire Italian population, there has been a complete lack of principled resistance to the measures by the country’s political opposition.

The Democratic Party, headed by former member of the Italian Communist Party Walter Veltroni, has said little about the government’s measures. Leading party members have merely noted that the presence of soldiers in the country’s historical town centres at the peak of the vacation season could harm Italy’s image amongst tourists.

Former public prosecutor Antonio di Pietro (Italy of Values) explained that the problems of public security were due to cuts in the police budget. The recently approved measures, he said, were as likely to succeed as an attempt to “wash one’s face with dirty water”. Instead, Di Pietro would like to tackle the problem on the basis of previous police methods, without resorting to such drastic measures as the deployment of the army in public places and on the streets.

The leaders of Communist Refoundation also played down the issue and failed to exhibit any real interest in the fate of immigrants and refugees. Paolo Ferrero, who recently succeeded Fausto Bertinotti and Franco Giordano as party secretary of Communist Refoundation, explained that the imposition of the state of emergency was “a diversion to distract Italians from the consequences of government measures, which are crippling the country and its weakest layers”. For his part Nichi Vendola, president of the region of Apulia and prominent member of Communist Refoundation rejected the emergency measures in radical tones as “a further piece of fascism”.

What both men conceal is the fact that Communist Refoundation bears a large share of responsibility for the current situation. For two years (2006-2008), Communist Refoundation was part of the Prodi government, which issued its own decree for the deportation of all those who allegedly represented “a danger to the public order”. It was the first administration to draw up lists of Romanian Roma for possible deportation. At the time, Paolo Ferrero, a Communist Refoundation minister in the Prodi government, publicly defended the decrees against Sinti and Roma passed in November 2007.

In order to take part in the government, Communist Refoundation supported a host of shameful measures implemented by the Prodi cabinet, including an austerity program aimed at rescuing the state budget, military missions in Afghanistan and Lebanon, the expansion of the American military basis at Vicenza, and increases to the country’s defence budget. Communist Refoundation agreed to every measure—reeling out its standard argument that supporting Prodi was the only way to prevent Berlusconi from returning to power. The cost of all of these measures was footed by the working population.

This consequence of this policy was a historical debacle for the Prodi regime and Communist Refoundation. In elections held in the spring of 2008, Communist Refoundation lost over two and a half million votes and all of its seats in parliament. The path was then clear for a return to power by the alliance of right-wing parties led by Silvio Berlusconi.

Social dimension

The measures of the Berlusconi government are directed not only against immigrants, but also against poor Italians. This is made clear by an auxiliary motion regarding measures to “combat poverty” put forward by the Northern League, which is also part of Berlusconi’s coalition.

The Northern League submitted a proposal whereby the basic social security supplement (INPS) of 400 euros given to all poor people be paid in the future only to those who have worked at least ten years in Italy and paid social security contributions. The purpose of this measure is to exclude payment to immigrants.

When it was revealed that the proposal by the Northern League would also affect up to 800,000 pensioners, housewives, elderly monks and nuns and other Italian citizens, the press responded by declaring the suggestion was merely an embarrassing mistake.

In fact it reveals the class character of the government’s policies, which are directed in the first place against defenceless layers of the population who lack any lobby, but also serve as preparation for a frontal attack against the entire working population.

The government can offer no solution to the problems that really affect the population: rising prices, pensioner poverty, youth unemployment, insecure living conditions, the garbage crisis, etc. Contrary to the fulsome promises made by Berlusconi in his election campaign, the economic situation of the country has only worsened dramatically.

The country is on the brink of stagflation, or a combination of economic stagnation and inflation. The Italian central bank has cut its economic growth prognosis for 2008 and 2009 to 0.4 percent, or virtually zero growth. At the same time, July’s inflation rate (4.1 percent) was the highest in 12 years. Average incomes in Italy are already 20 percent below the average of the industrialised countries of the OECD.

Under these conditions, refugees and immigrants, who are harshly exploited as domestic servants, caregivers for the elderly or seasonal crop pickers, have been selected as scapegoats in order to divert attention away from growing social polarisation.

The government, with its Mafia-style methods, unconditionally defends the interests of the country’s super rich, first and foremost Italy’s richest man: Silvio Berlusconi. Through the passing of a custom-made immunity law the “Cavaliere” has even insured his impunity from the courts.

At the same time, the government is wracked by internal divisions: the separatist Northern League is striving for the independence of the economically stronger north at the expense of the country’s poorer southern regions. Meanwhile the National Alliance, which, as successor party to the fascist MSI, has its most powerful base of support in the south, defends the national central state.

The political crisis has also been exacerbated by the international financial crisis and high energy prices. The move to introduce police state measures is an expression of these growing social and political tensions.

The means employed by the Berlusconi government to deal with refugees and immigrants must be seen as a warning to the whole working class. By deploying troops for domestic purposes and drawing up a “gypsy file” based on a law similar to one passed by Mussolini’s dictatorship in 1941, the government is evoking the spirit of the country’s fascist past while mounting an assault on the basic social and democratic rights of the entire working class.

Default Italy inks agreement to restore Bam Citadel

TEHRAN, Sept. 7 (MNA) -- Italy and Iran have recently signed an agreement for buttressing, preservation, and restoration of the Bam Citadel in southern Iran’s Kerman Province.

Based on the agreement Italian experts will buttress and preserve the Tower One of the citadel as well as restore the caravanserai of the ancient site, the Persian service of CHN reported on Sunday.

An Italian team led by Giuseppe Proietti will begin working on the Tower One of the citadel in late September, said Eskandar Mokhtari, the director of the rescue team working on the citadel.

According to Mokhtari, the project for restoration of the caravanserai will take one year to complete and will require about 500,000 dollars.

Covering an area of 180,000 square meters, the Bam Citadel is located 200 kilometers south of the city of Kerman. The citadel was the world’s largest adobe building before it was almost completely destroyed in an earthquake on December 26, 2003.

In May 2005, Rome held an international conference on the preservation and restoration of Bam’s cultural heritage.

Over 70 projects for the preservation of historical sites of Bam city and the Bam Citadel were discussed during the two-day event attended by experts from UNESCO, ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites).

It is not clear exactly when the Bam Citadel was built, but it is widely believed that it was originally constructed during the Sassanid era (224-651 CE). While some surviving structures date to the 12th century and before, most of what remains was built during the Safavid era (1502-1722).

The city of Bam and its cultural landscape were registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2004. Due to the severe damages caused by the earthquake to the Bam Citadel, it is currently on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger.

Default Rome mayor's fascism comment stirs up storm

ROME: Italy's opposition politicians and Jewish leaders reacted with outrage Monday to a newspaper interview in which Rome's right-wing mayor refused to condemn fascism as evil.

Gianni Alemanno's comments were published Sunday by Italian daily Corriere della Sera as the mayor and other Italian politicians concluded a trip to Israel that included a stop at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem.

In the interview, Alemanno condemned the racial laws passed by Benito Mussolini's regime in 1938, but when asked if he considered fascism "an absolute evil" the mayor took a softer stance.

"I don't think so and I never thought so: Fascism was a more complex phenomenon," Alemanno was quoted as saying by Corriere. "Many people joined it in good faith, and I don't feel like labeling them with that definition."

Alemanno added that "the racial laws enacted by fascism, which caused its political and cultural end, were the absolute evil."

Center-left politicians accused Alemanno of rewriting history and ignoring earlier dictatorial actions by Mussolini, who seized power in 1922 and went on to curtail political freedoms and jail or murder opponents.

"It's hard not to define as an absolute evil something that for 20 years suppressed liberty," said Giuseppe Fioroni, a center-left lawmaker and former education minister.

"Before the racial laws, fascism had erased the freedom of citizens who didn't share its views. There was only one party in Parliament and unions had been destroyed," said Walter Veltroni, the opposition's leader and Alemanno's predecessor as mayor of Rome.

Veltroni said Monday he would resign in protest as head of a city commission charged with building a Holocaust museum in the capital. He said he could no longer work on the project with Alemanno, who is also a member of the commission.

Renzo Gattegna, the president of Italy's Jewish Communities, criticized Alemanno's comments, telling Corriere that "it is difficult to separate" the judgment on fascism from that on the anti-Semitic laws it passed.

"Without fascism there wouldn't have been any racial laws," Auschwitz survivor Piero Terracina told the paper.

Alemanno was quoted as saying by the ANSA news agency on Monday that his comments had been misunderstood and that the outcry had been based on "journalistic headlines and not on the reality of my statements." He also called on Veltroni to reconsider his resignation.

The 50-year-old Alemanno is a former youth leader of a neo-fascist party that turned mainstream conservative during the 1990s. He won local elections in April to become the capital's first right-wing mayor since World War II.

He may of not called it evil, but in reality he actually did because he criticized the more nationalistic side to Mussolini's fascism. What a loser!

Default Italy: Seventy-six illegal immigrants land on Lampedusa

Palermo, 9 Sept. (AKI) - The Italian coastguard on Tuesday rescued a boat with 76 illegal immigrants on board, including women and children, off the southern island of Lampedusa.

The boat was intercepted 38 nautical miles south of Lampedusa and the illegal immigrants - including 13 women and three children - were transferred to a coastguard vessel and taken to the port.

No information was available concerning the nationalities or medical condition of the immigrants.

On Thursday, 46 other illegal immigrants landed on Lampedusa, the southernmost Italian island, which lies between Tunisia and the Mediterranean island of Malta.

During the summer months, the number of illegal immigrants heading for Europe's Mediterranean countries including Italy, Spain and Malta surges.

Hundreds arrive each week in search of a better life in Europe aboard people smugglers' boats which mostly set sail from North Africa.

Over 9,000 migrants have died in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and Spain since 1988, according to monitoring organisation Fortress Europe.

Thumbs up Italian government cracks down on street prostitution

The Italian government has introduced a new law to crack down on street prostitution as part of a wider battle against crime.

Pimps and clients are targeted by the legislation, which envisages jail terms and hefty fines for offenders.

There are said to be up to 100,000 prostitutes in Italy, many of them illegal immigrants.

The government says it’s time to act. Equality Minister Mara Carfagna said: “These measures will deal a heavy blow to the sex trade and its roots, punishing prostitution in the streets, which has become the privileged place for this shameful phenomenon.”

The new law is central to the government’s campaign against crime, which politicians and the media largely blame on illegal immigrants.

However, critics say the new measures will simply force prostitutes to work behind closed doors.

jewsign Berlusconi accuses Iran of 'lunacy' on Israel

Speaking at awards ceremony held by Parisian Jewish organization, Italian prime minister urges international community to 'pay the utmost attention' to threats made by Tehran's Ahmadinejad

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi accused Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday of acting like a lunatic when it comes to Israel , and said the world needed to keep a close eye on him.

"I think we must pay the utmost attention to the lunacy of someone who says, perhaps for internal reasons, that Israel must be wiped off the map," Berlusconi said to a Jewish organization in Paris, where he was receiving an award. A 2005 statement by Ahmadinejad saying that Israel should be "wiped off the map" outraged the international community.

The Iranian leader has since made predictions that Israel would "disappear" and, visiting Rome earlier this year for a UN summit, said the country would vanish with or without the involvement of Tehran.

Last Friday Ahmadinejad reassured Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh that Iran would stand by the Palestinians "to the ultimate victory." In a telephone conversation between the two, Iran's leader expressed his hope for a victory celebration "after the disappearance of Zionists from Palestine and from the world."

Ahmadinejad added that "those who follow the ways of God and adopt the path of resistance will win."

"Today, the resistance in Palestine is a source of pride for all Muslims and freedom lovers in the world," Ahmadinejad said. "The Palestinian nation is fighting against the most despicable people on the face of this earth…the resistance, which is burning in the faith of the Palestinian nation, is shaking up the Zionist enemy."
