12:35 PST OAKLAND -- The man police called one of the most violent members of the gang behind a crime spree that killed five people was found guilty today of four murders and could face the death penalty.

An Alameda County jury convicted Demarcus Ralls, 21, on three counts of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder. Jurors also found him guilty of two counts of attempted murder and more than a dozen counts of robbery and attempted robbery.

Ralls is the first of six members of the Nut Cases gang -- some of whom sport tattoos of the Planters "Mr. Peanut" logo

-- to go on trial in connection with the crime spree, which included five killings and 23 robberies over 10 weeks and ended with their arrests in January 2003. The remaining defendants, including two of Ralls' half-brothers and a cousin, are expected to go on trial later this year.

Police believe Ralls is among the most violent members of a gang that, according to members' own statements to police, killed and robbed simply for the thrill.

Denver arrest made in women's murders in Mexican border city

A Mexican national suspected in the serial killings of at least 10 women in the border town of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, was arrested Tuesday in Denver, Mexican and American authorities said Thursday.

Edgar Alvarez-Cruz was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Denver for being in the country illegally after Mexican authorities asked the U.S. Marshals Service to help locate him in the city.

Mexican authorities believe Alvarez-Cruz is part of a gang of men who raped and murdered at least 10 women in Ciudad Juarez from 1993 to 2003, U.S. Ambassador Antonio O. Garza Jr. said.

Over a span of more than a decade, hundreds of women have been found dead, raped and strangled in Ciudad Juarez, a Mexican town that borders El Paso.

The killings sparked international outrage by human rights groups because the homicides have gone largely unsolved.

Alvarez-Cruz was taken from Denver to an immigration detention center in El Paso on Thursday and will be removed from the country today, said Jeff Copp, ICE special agent in charge.

Denver police Detective Virginia Quiñones said the department did not assist with the arrest. It was not immediately clear why Alvarez-Cruz was in Denver or how authorities tracked him here.

The Los Angeles Times identified Alvarez-Cruz as a 30-year-old cement worker.

A 30-year-old man with the name Edgar Alvarez-Cruz has a Colorado criminal record dating back to 2002, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

Those records - all considered misdemeanors - show arrests for domestic violence, wrongs to minors, disturbing the peace and making threats over the phone to injure a person. All those arrests were made by Denver police.

The U.S. Marshals Service is helping the Mexican government's task force solve the cases of hundreds of women who were murdered or reported missing by their families in Ciudad Juarez and the state of Chihuahua.

"We believe Alvarez-Cruz's arrest will help U.S.
and Mexican law enforcement authorities solve numerous cases involving the murders and disappearances of women in Ciudad Juarez and in Chihuahua, and ultimately bring their killers to justice," Garza said.
There was not an official warrant citing the murders of women in Ciudad Juarez, Copp said, but Mexican authorities made a specific request that they wanted Alvarez-Cruz in custody.

Mexico Attorney General Daniel Cabeza de Vaca told reporters Alvarez-Cruz had been under investigation but fled the country.

"We don't exactly know how many homicides he may have been responsible for, but there is solid evidence in several cases we know of," Cabeza de Vaca said.

Amnesty International has documented that more than 400 women have been killed along the border in Ciudad Juarez, while official Mexican government numbers place the death total lower.

Analysts told The Dallas Morning News that this arrest could provide key information about
the deaths of at least 14 women.

The News reported those women were killed separately in crimes known as the Cotton Field and Cristo Negro - Black Christ - murders. The names refer to sites where the bodies of the women were discovered in 2001 and 2002.

MI Man Gets Life For Setting Fire That Killed 5 Children


A 35-year-old man convicted of setting a house fire that killed five children will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Juwan Deering was found guilty earlier this month in Oakland County.

The Royal Oak Township man proclaimed his innocence during yesterday's sentencing hearing but the judge advised him to save his remarks for his expected appeal.

The fire April 2000 fire killed five of nine children who were inside the home.

Authorities say Deering set the fire because
of a dispute over money.

Detroiter charged in slaying of seven prostitutes

Detroit - A man was charged Tuesday in the slayings of seven prostitutes in Detroit between 2001 and June of this year.

Shelly Andre Brooks faces seven counts of premeditated murder and seven counts of felony murder. The 37-year-old Detroit resident faces a sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted of any of the counts.

Brooks remains a suspect in the deaths of seven other prostitutes. Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said the other seven killings were “very similar,” but she declined to comment further.

Police said all seven of the women Brooks is accused of killing were drug users and ranged in age from 30 to 53. All were raped and killed by blunt-force trauma.

Their bodies were found on the city's east side, some in buildings and others in vacant lots.

Brooks has been in custody since July 30 and was being held in connection with a sexual assault of a prostitute. He was to be arraigned later Tuesday on the murder charges.

JERUSALEM — An Israeli court Monday convicted a Jewish settler of killing four Palestinians in a West Bank shooting spree last year, part of a bid to stop Israel's pullout from the Gaza Strip.

The Jerusalem district court convicted Asher Weisgan of killing the Palestinian laborers on Aug. 17, 2005, the day Israel began forcibly evacuating settlers from Gaza.

ADVERTISEMENTWeisgan was found guilty of murder, attempted murder and serious attempt to harm, prosecutors said. He will be sentenced soon, a court official said.

Weisgan, a driver, had taken several workers to jobs in Shiloh, a West Bank settlement. Once there, he opened fire on them, killing two.

Later he opened fire on other laborers in Shiloh's industrial park, killing two more, before being overpowered.

"The preservation of life is not done through the spilling of blood," the panel of three judges said in its ruling.

Prosecutors said Weisgan had hoped the attack would stop the pullout by forcing the redeployment of Israeli troops from Gaza to the West Bank to quell unrest.

Israel completed the withdrawal of its troops and more than 8,500 settlers from Gaza in mid-September 2005, ending 38 years of occupation.

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Convicted serial killer and rapist Raymont Hopewell, 35, was sentenced Thursday to life without the possibility of parole for a series of attacks, mostly on elderly women, that terrorized the west Baltimore neighborhood where he grew up.

Hopewell issued a half-hearted apology after listening to statements from two women who survived his attacks and relatives of his murder victims.

He pleaded guilty to five counts of murder, four counts of rape and various other crimes and was sentenced to four consecutive life terms.


"I just want to tell everybody that I'm sorry for their losses," said Hopewell, who sat slumped in his chair through much of the sentencing hearing.

Rose Ellen McDavid, an elderly woman who was raped by Hopewell and whose description to a police sketch artist led to his arrest, described the attack in harrowing detail and said she thought he would kill her.

She credited her faith for saving her life.

"God used me as an instrument to stop his rampage of rape, murder and evil deeds," McDavid said.

State's Attorney Patricia Jessamy, who rarely seeks the death penalty, offered the plea deal after consulting with the victims' families, said a spokeswoman for Jessamy.

Many, but not all, said they would prefer a swift sentence of life without parole to a drawn-out series of death penalty appeals.

The state offered the plea deal in August and Hopewell pleaded guilty the next day.

"Had he not done that, the state was prepared to seek the death penalty," Burns said.

As Frost pointed a finger at Handy standing just a few feet away, he said, "I hope that somebody on the inside will get their hands on him and choke the life out of him." Relatives of the other victims applauded from the back of the courtroom, but Handy just stood by his lawyer and laughed.

Court documents said that Handy and three others stole a safe containing cash from the victims' home before shooting them.

When Handy addressed the judge he expressed no remorse for his actions. "I'm not taking this deal to escape the death penalty," he said. "I'm going to prison.
It's like sending a wildcat back to the jungle."

He went on to say that he would have liked to get the death penalty, and blamed his previous trips through the criminal justice system for the way he turned out in life.

"I'm not asking nobody for sympathy or pity or mercy. I know there's people up in here hurting," he said. "Pain's a part of life. Deal with it.

Outside the courtroom, Handy's mother apologized to the families. "I'm sorry, and there's nothing I can do to take it back," said

An autopsy showed Tunstall bled to death after sustaining an abdominal wound caused by a sharp object, believed to be scissors, said Ace Hart, a deputy St. Clair County coroner.

Hart said he believes Tunstall was knocked unconscious before her baby, seven months into gestation, was removed during a slaying he called "very graphic and very brutal."

Hall mostly supported her family with food stamps and her younger daughter's disability checks, (Crack baby?) according to relatives, but she talked about wanting a better life.

In recent years, she took classes at local colleges and vocational schools.

(KTVI) - Sources tell FOX 2 News the bodies of three children who have been missing from East St. Louis were found Saturday evening at a housing project.

The three children were found dead, stuffed inside a washer dryer unit at the John DeShields Housing Complex at 14th and Bond.

Police announced in August that they had linked the three slayings but said they had not linked the DNA evidence to a specific killer. Police would not specify yesterday how they linked Smallwood's DNA to the crimes, but indicated it happened in the past few days.

The victims -- Doris Ann Roberts, Sonora Lynn Allen and Erica C. Butler --
were killed over a span of seven years, beginning with Roberts in 1999. Butler was slain in April.

Police also announced yesterday that DNA linked Smallwood to the previously unsolved 1993 rape of Viola J. Greene, 83, a retired schoolteacher who died in 1998 of natural causes.

Smallwood is in state prison in La Grange after violating probation this summer from a drug conviction.
