Video: Diver uses speargun to fend off attack from great white shark
Great whites are the coolest sharks in the ocean, but they're the last thing you want to see when you're actually, you know, in the ocean. Jimmy Roseman was spearfishing off the coast of Florida near Bethel Shoals on May 6 when the shark that Steven Spielberg made famous crashed the party. The massive fish obviously had evil intentions for Roseman. It stayed close, and made several charges toward him, being dissuaded only by the point of the speargun. "I felt a thump and heard what I suspect was the teeth hitting the tank," Roseman told CNN's Anderson Cooper about the moment the shark first made its presence known. "I noticed this one didn't want to leave. It kept getting more aggressive." On the fish's last charge, Roseman gave it a hard poke, and the fish finally skedaddled far enough that the diver could retreat to the surface. Once aboard the boat, Roseman told his buddies what happened, so they traveled three or four miles away, and continued their dive. As reports of sharks swimming in the Alabama Gulf Coast started flowing in to FOX10 News, we dug deeper to see the history of shark attacks in the area. In Alabama, in the past 12 years, five people have been attacked by sharks; none of the attacks have been fatal according to data released by the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), a project housed on the Florida Museum of Natural History website. Alabama shark attacks This graphic shows the number of shark attacks in Alabama since 2001, along with the fatalities resulting from those attacks. In Florida waters, the story is different, of nearly 300 shark attacks there since 2001, three have been fatal. As for the other Gulf States, Texas has seen 18 attacks with no deaths. Louisiana and Mississippi don’t appear in the ISAF data for that period. Since 2001, of 477 people attacked by sharks in the most active areas in the US, 12 have died. http://fox10tv.com/2014/06/09/blog-s...ng-gulf-coast/ |

Great white shark attacks New Jersey fishing boat This is the terrifying moment fisherman Steve Clark spotted a great white shark almost half the size of his boat making a lunge fo
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...hing-boat.html
A US man has filmed his close encounter with a great white shark, which suddenly emerged from the Atlantic Ocean to attack his boat on Saturday. Steve Clark was with friends about 30 miles off the coast of South Jersey when a 16-foot great white shark swam up to his boat and tore off a bag of bait. In a scene reminiscent of Steven Spielberg's 1975 film Jaws, the shark's head can be seen breaking through the surface water exposing its teeth before it grabs the bag that was hanging off the side of the vessel and disappears back into the depths. The footage which was posted onto YouTube on the June 21 has been viewed over 16,000 times. Shark attacks are rising — but you're still 33 times more likely to be killed by a dog
There have been 2,074 "unprovoked" shark attacks recorded since 1960 (more on that term in a second), and the number each year seems to be trending upward. That's according to the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File. The bulk of reported shark attacks happen in the United States, and those numbers rose in the 1980s and 1990s (though they're still very uncommon, with only around 50 or less each year). Experts have suggested a couple of reasons for the increase. First, more and more people are hitting the beaches each summer. But sharks themselves are also becoming more numerous, thanks to years of conservation efforts. One NOAA survey in 2014 found that white shark populations were rebounding in the North Atlantic. A separate 2011 study found that white sharks were becoming more numerous around central California. A third key reason for the uptick is much more mundane — in places like Florida, better reporting systems since the 1990s mean that more and more minor attacks now get recorded, when they previously would've gone unnoticed. http://www.vox.com/2014/7/8/5878881/...omparison-dogs |

650 pound tiger shark caught by fishermen contained human leg, head November 12, 2014 An enormous tiger shark caught by fishermen in the Philippines last month weighed some 650 pounds. That was impressive alone, but the weight of the ocean predator was overshadowed by what was inside the shark's belly: a human leg and head, according to a Fox News report. The human remains inside the tiger shark, caught between Bohol and Camiguin islands, were partially digested, and the rotting aroma from decomposition was more than they could bear. However, due to folklore and cultural beliefs among Filipinos, much of the tiger shark, along with the human head and limb, were disposed of and tossed back into the sea. Many believe the soul of the dead human being will come back to haunt them. Still, the head of the shark and its fins were kept, likely as part of a delicacy for soup and stock. "It was so disgusting. We can't bear the awful smell. We feared that the human remains may bring bad luck to us." Even then, the thought that a man-eating shark had consumed a human being was chilling and macabre on many levels for locals. A fisherman's wife spoke to media sources about the contents of the shark and how she insisted her husband part with it after the tiger shark's jaws were set out to dry in the sun the next day. "I don't want the sight of that jaw, knowing that the shark had eaten a human being. Who knows, the victim's spirit might visit us." The tiger's jaw measured some 17 inches in diameter, and according to one expert, the shark that apparently attacked and ate a human being's head and leg was much larger than 650 pounds. One estimate is that it weighed twice as much and was nearly 13 feet long. Regarding the identity of the victim eaten by the massive shark, some speculate that it could be one of two passengers who disappeared without a trace last month in the area. Then, a ferry sank and two on board are still missing and presumed dead. The remains of a human found inside the tiger shark are unsettling. However, one lady survived a recent attack in Hawaii after her friend punched the sea predator several times in the face. She required 20 stitches on her fingers, but was otherwise fine. Sadly, the unknown victim inside the tiger was not so lucky. |
