NAACP Requests Investigation Into UNM Basketball Program

POSTED: 8:24 am MST January 3, 2005

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The NAACP will ask the University of New Mexico for an investigation of its women's basketball program.

The request came after former UNM player Fatima Maddox met with the group to discuss her reasons for leaving the team.

Maddox charged she was treated differently than nonblack players by coach Don Flanagan.

In a phone interview, the coach said he welcomed the investigation.

Fatima Maddox quits team
Sophomore guard also leaving school

Albuquerque seemed to be filled with promise and hope when Fatima Maddox first visited the University of New Mexico campus.

After a whirlwind visit, Maddox decided two years ago she would cancel all other school visits and become a Lobo, her high school basketball coach said.

"I encouraged her to look at other schools, but she refused," said Daryl Grantz, Maddox's high school coach in Colorado Springs. "She said it would be a waste of her time and other coaches' time. She said New Mexico was the perfect place to be, and she wasn't interested in looking anywhere else."

Perfection somehow crumbled.

Lobos coach Don Flanagan issued a statement late Thursday afternoon announcing Maddox, a sophomore point guard, had left the women's basketball team.

"Fatima has decided to leave the women's basketball program and is withdrawing from the University of New Mexico," Flanagan said. "We wish Fatima the best in whatever she decides to do in the future."
Flanagan, who along with his players is on holiday break, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Maddox started seven of eight games this season, averaging 7.4 points per game.

During her career, she averaged 5.5 points, two rebounds and 1.3 assists in 39 appearances.

She did not play in the Lobos' 56-27 win over New Mexico State on Tuesday.

Flanagan refused to discuss why he benched Maddox for disciplinary reasons that he would not disclose.

"That's something in-house, and it's just one game," Flanagan said.

He said he did not tell Maddox about the punishment before the game, but he said she should have figured out why she was not allowed to play.

Flanagan said the discipline was related to on-the-court problems.
