The "Incomparable" Jessye Norman
The Negress opera singer Jessye Norman died last week, and for the past week, my local classical musical station keeps referring to her as "The Incomparable [sic] Jessye Norman." Literally every time they mention her name, it is with the word "Incomparable" in front of it. They must have put out a memo instructing all the on-air hosts always to place the word "Incomparable" in front of her name. They are acting as if the word "Incomparable" were a part of her name, like the Venerable Bede or the Amazing Randi.
I personally don't like Jessye Norman's singing voice; it is too dark for my taste. Decades ago, I purchased a collection of the complete Ring Cycle performed by the New York Metropolitan Opera on laser disk. At the time, laser disk was the hottest thing, like eight-track. In the performance of Die Walküre, Jessye Norman sang the part of Sieglinde, making the performance unwatchable, although I was able to watch it live at the Met with a White opera singer performing the part of Sieglinde. I later purchased a complete set of the Bayreuth Ring Cycle with an all-White cast.
