Migrant crisis is unifying Czech society - President Zeman

Prague - The migrant crisis is unifying Czech society and an approval of the refugee influx violating the Dublin regulations means an approval of crime, President Milos Zeman, an ardent opponent of accepting refugees from Islamic countries, told CTK today.

He rejected the view that the migrant crisis divides society, arguing that the very opposite is true.

"Even people, who have very different opinions on other affairs, more or less agree on their opinions on illegal migration," Zeman said.

According to the Dublin regulations, those who enter the territory of a safe country have the duty to apply for asylum, but they should not choose the country, he added.

Zeman said 90 or even 95 percent of Czech society had the same view of the migrant crisis. Only Prague intellectuals did not share it, he indicated.

The president arrived at a meeting of the National Security Council dealing with migration this evening.

Zeman has been against the introduction of mandatory quotas for the redistribution of refugees across the EU. He has supported the deployment of the Czech military along the country´s border to protect it from refugees.

Zeman welcomed it that 25 Czech soldiers would be sent to protect the Hungarian border. "Any step, no matter how big or small, is positive. To express verbal support is one thing and to provide real support is something else," he told CTK.

Czech President Attends Anti-Muslim Rally

Quote:
The president of the Czech Republic has attended a rally organized by an anti-Muslim group to coincide with the 26th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution that toppled communist rule.

Milos Zeman, who is known for his anti-Islam rhetoric, told the crowd of several thousand people in Prague that they aren't extremists.

Riot police separated them from a counterdemonstration.

Zeman warned against immigrants who belonged to a "culture of murderers and religious hatred."

The rally in the Czech capital on November 17 was organized by the Bloc Against Islam.

It took place at a university campus where the anticommunist revolution began in 1989, prompting Charles University officials to distance themselves from it.

The migrant crisis and the Paris attacks attracted thousands of people to different rallies in Prague in favor and against refugees, even though the country has seen only a small number of asylum seekers compared to several European nations.

Czech President: Turkey Acting Like Ally of Daesh, Shouldn’t be Part of EU

Quote:
Czech President Milos Zeman has allegedly slammed the idea of Turkey joining the EU, stressing that Ankara appears to act as if it was an ally of Daesh (the Islamic state) militant group rather than that of western powers.

The remarks by the Czech leader were made at the end of his visit to the country’s north Bohemia region, where Zeman reportedly condemned EU authorities’ decision to provide Ankara with $3.2 billion aid package for keeping refugees fleeing

violence in Syria on Turkish territory and preventing them from reaching mainland Europe.

"The Roman Empire, before it collapsed, too, paid tribute money to barbarians [for them not to pilfer its territory]," Zaman claimed, adding that Turkey usually acts like a Daesh ally rather than that of the West, despite being a NATO member.

Zeman explained his stance, arguing that Turkey can accommodate Syrian refugees on the grounds that majorities of populations in both nations have a common religion – Islam — and there is no cultural barrier between accepting and receiving sides.

“The danger does not rest in Islam as such but in transferring these [Muslim] habits to Europe,” he pointed out.

President Zeman also said that Brussels must regard Ankara with "caution," underscoring that Turkey is not purely a European nation and, considering this, shouldn’t be treated like every other EU country.

Zeman is not the first European politician who is skeptical of Turkey joining the EU.

According to PJ Media outlet, Geert Wilders, the head of Dutch far-right party (PVV) that has led the polls in the Netherlands for several months in a row, sticking to a similar position. He reiterated that even not radical Muslims moving to Europe bring their beliefs — which are not westernized and not enlightened enough – there.

Earlier in November, Ankara inked a deal with Brussels suggesting that Turkey will assist in tackling the flow of migrants to Europe in return for €3 billion package and the revival of negotiations on the country joining the EU.

Default Extreme rightist leader convicted of "anti-Semitism"

Quote:
Jihlava, South Moravia, March 17 (CTK) - Extra-parliamentary National Democracy (ND) leader Adam B. Bartos and ND member Ladislav Zemanek are guilty in the case of an anti-Semitic text at the grave of Anezka Hruzova, murdered in 1899, in Polna, south Moravia, judge Tereza Jedlickova has
ruled.

Leopold Hilsner, from the local Jewish ghetto in Polna, was falsely found guilty of the murder of Hruzova, a 19-year-year Czech Christian woman, and sentenced to death. The punishment was later commuted to life imprisonment. He was only pardoned in 1918.

The cause celebre triggered anti-Semitism in the Czech Lands at the beginning of the 20th century. It was challenged by Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, who later became the first Czechoslovak president (1918-35). He denied the theory of a ritual murder, due to which he was a target of hateful public attacks.

Bartos and Zemanek displayed a sign with a photograph of the murdered woman and a text reading: "Her death cemented the Czech nation and it showed the urgent necessity to solve the Jewish question. The Jewish question has not been resolved in a satisfactory manner yet." Both men signed the text.

Default Security at Jewish Sites in Prague to Be Increased Amid Terror Concerns

Quote:
Security at Jewish sites in Prague and across the Czech Republic will be tightened due to increased terror concerns.

On Tuesday, Czech officials and Jewish groups signed a memorandum on cooperation on security issues. The Jewish groups — the Federation of the Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic along with the Chabad center and the Jewish Museum in Prague — agreed to form a security council that will be responsible for communication with the police and providing information to the authorities about potential threats. The council will also propose measures to make Jewish sites safer.

Czech Govt to Buy Out Pig Farm on Roma Holocaust Site

The Czech government said Tuesday it was in talks to buy out a pig farm built on the site of a former Nazi concentration camp where hundreds of Roma prisoners died during World War II.

Anti-racism activists in May demanded the EU halt subsidies to the farm, part of their long campaign to remove it from the sensitive location.

Former Schindler's factory in Brněnec to be Holocaust mémorial

Brnenec, East Bohemia, Aug 10 - The Czech Endowment Fund Memorial of Shoah and Oskar Schindler wants to turn a former factory and concentration camp in Brnenec into a memorial to the Holocaust victims, board head Jaroslav Novak has told CTK.

During World War Two, German industrialist Oskar Schindler (1908-74) employed in the factory Jewish workers brought from Poland by which he saved more than 1000 people from death.

The current owner of the complex has promised to provide a part of it for the fund and the local self-rule authority also supports the project.

Far-right politician Adam Bartoš punished for Holocaust denial

Prague, Jan 26 - Czech far-right politician Adam B. Bartos received a two-year suspended prison sentence with three years of probation for Holocaust denial, incitement to hatred and defamation of the nation in his texts and speeches, a Prague district court ruled on Friday.

Bartos appealed against the verdict on the spot. State attorney Zdenka Galkova is considering whether to appeal or not.

Bartos, leader of the far-right extra-parliamentary party National Democracy, defended himself based on the freedom of speech. "Some people may not like what I say, but this does not mean I do not have the freedom of speech like anybody else," he told journalists after the verdict was issued.

Bartos said the statements he had made and which the court challenged became common opinions even among presidential candidates in the meantime.

The people who came to support Bartos in the courtroom on Friday included failed presidential candidate Petr Hannig, a music producer and marginal politician who received 0.56 percent of the vote in the first round of the election two weeks ago.

Bartos claimed that the aim of the trial was to intimidate him and force him to withdraw from political life.

Judge Pavla Hajkova concluded that the prosecution was right to declare that Bartos issued anti-Semitic books and his speeches, articles and Internet comments presented Jews as human beings who only had negative qualities.

The court said Bartos presented misleading statements without any evidence in order to reinforce prejudices about the detrimental influence of Jews, immigrants and Muslims.

In his speech in the courtroom, Bartos compared himself to Czech democratic politician Milada Horakova who was sentenced to death in a Communist show trial in 1950.

The state should not lead political trials with its citizens because this undermines its legitimacy, Bartos said.

Galkova said Bartos did not challenge the fact that he had made hateful statements, but he only claimed he had the right to say anything he wanted. The freedom of speech is not unlimited, however, she said.

Galkova dismissed Bartos's claim that he had the right to say the things he said since he was an investigative journalist and a head of a political party. Bartos's texts are not polemics with historical facts because they present monothematic opinions, she said.

An expert in extremism concluded that the books that Bartos wrote or issued were clearly anti-Semitic and some of them even denied the Holocaust.

In a separate case, Bartos received a suspended sentence for an anti-Semitic text he placed at the grave of Anezka Hruzova, murdered in Polna in 1899.

The rumour that the young woman was a victim of ritual murder spread after the crime and a local Jew, Leopold Hilsner, was found guilty of it without any convincing evidence. He was pardoned only in 1918. Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, later first Czechoslovak president, was one of those who fought the prejudice in the Hilsner affair.

Justice minister calls on Okamura to stop “polemicizing” about Lety

Czech Justice Minister Robert Pelikán has expressed strong concern over Freedom and Direct Democracy head Tomio Okamura’s questioning of conditions at a WW II-era concentration camp for Roma in Lety, South Bohemia. Although Mr Okamura apologized for an earlier false statement about Lety, he continues to question the accepted truth about the camp.

Brno procession protests against Roma Holocaust denial

About 250 people took part in a procession with candles walking through the city of Brno remembering the victims of the Czech Roma Holocaust and denouncing the recent statements by SPD politicians questioning the conditions in the Roma WWII camp in Lety.

The procession's organisers find such statements an unacceptable denial of the Roma Holocaust, inappropriate with regard to its victims and their families.

"It is our national disgrace," Roma musician Gejza Horvath said on account of the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) politicians' statements.

Gov't council for declaring Roma Holocaust memorial day

The Czech government council for ethnic minorities on Friday supported Justice Minister Robert Pelikan's (ANO) proposal that the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day be declared a significant day, Olga Jerabkova, from the government's human rights section, told CTK.

Pelikan proposed that the Chamber of Deputies officially declare August 2 the day commemorating the victims of the Roma Holocaust.

Pig's head put to Roma Holocaust memorial near closed pig farm

A pig's head was placed last weekend to the provisional Roma Holocaust Memorial near the former concentration camp in Lety where a pig farm was later built that the Czech state recently bought and plans to pull it down this year, the Aktualne.cz news site reported on Thursday.

The Roma Culture Museum that administers the site will not react to the provocation. "Somebody apparently wants to provoke us," Ludek Strasak, from the museum, said.

Strasak said the museum would address the police only if such a thing was repeated.

Norway ready to sponsor Czech monument to Roma Holocaust

Lety, South Bohemia, April 16 (CTK) - Ambassador of Norway Siri Ellen Sletner confirmed on Monday at the site of the Lety war-time concentration camp for the Roma that Norway wants to contribute with one million euros to the construction of the memorial to the Roma Holocaust in the place where a pig farm was located.

The Roma Culture Museum (MRK) has opened an information centre in Lety which commemorates the Roma genocide in Bohemia, MRK spokeswoman Kristina Kohoutova told journalists on Monday.

Czech court frees women charged with promoting Nazism more than a decade ago

6.10.2019

On Friday, 27 September, the District Court for Prague 2 freed six women charged with promoting and supporting the neo-Nazi Resistance Women Unity (RWU) movement. Some of the actions they had committed, according to the court, did not rise to the level of a felony, while in the case of other actions it could not be proved that the defendants were the perpetrators.

For some of the crimes described, the effect of their criminality has now expired, the judge said. The verdict has yet to take effect, which means the prosecutor could theoretically appeal.

Czech Police investigate distribution of antisemitic book after media reports

10.2.2020

Pemic Books, a distributor in the Czech Republic, has paused its distribution of a publication entitled "The Myth of Six Million" (Mýtus šesti milionů). The book openly denies that Jewish people were murdered by the Nazis and their accomplices during the Second World War.

Another antisemitic book entitled "Circumcised Republic" (Obřezaná republika) continues to be available through the distributor, however. News server Deník N drew attention to the Czech edition of "The Myth of Six Million" last month in several articles.

"We have paused that publication," responded Hana Mýdlová, product manager at Pemic Books. The distributor said it has withdrawn the book at the request of Bodyart Press, the publisher.

"Bodyart Press has requested suspension of distribution," the product manager said. The publishing house also deleted the book from its website last month after inquiries from journalists.

The publication is from the 1960s and was written by American author David L. Hoggan. In it, Hoggan writes about the Holocaust of the Jews as a "deliberate and blatant" counterfeit of history and calls it the "genocide legend".

The book "The Circumcised Republic" by Czech author Adam B. Bartoš, who has been convicted of committing antisemitism more than once, will continue to be offered for sale. "I sent your e-mail to the Head of the Purchasing Department, Pavel Hurt, and I was told there has been no court ruling and we have no reason to withdraw the book," Mýdlová responded after Deník N pointed out the existence of both books.

The antisemitic publications were released in Czech three years ago, but police in Prague only began to deal with them after Deník N published its articles. When asked why investigators had not noticed the publication of the antisemitic literature for so many years, police president Jan Švejdar did not respond.
