RETAIL giant David Jones has banned underage models from its summer fashion parade.

Experts have applauded the decision, which follows controversy over the use of young models in fashion parades and art campaigns.
Castings at the Rundle Mall store yesterday were for catwalk spots in the store's Sydney parade on August 5.

Modelling agencies had to sign a letter confirming their models were aged more than 18 and models were asked to bring identification to the casting.

Polish model Monika Jagaciak, 14, was banned from Australian Fashion Week this year for being too young, after organisers bowed to public pressure to adopt a minimum age of 16 for models.

At last year's London Fashion Week, the British Fashion Council contemplated extreme measures, such as weighing and drug testing models, to curb abuse and eating disorders in the industry.

Organisers of Sydney Fashion Festival, from August 13 to 17, have imposed a miniumum age of 16. An industry insider said this was "the first time I have ever come across (a ban on models under) 18".

The decision also might have been fuelled by the controversy over the nudity of a six-year-old girl on the latest cover of the Art Monthly Australia magazine.

Store fashion director Kelvin Harries said the age restrictions made the parades "more appropriate for the demographic of David Jones buyers".

"Eighteen to 35 is the target audience and (we) need girls to reflect that," he said.

Psychologist and life coach Darryl Cross said: "The big message is success in life is really about looking good, which is not the message you want to give teenagers."
